  3. If it weren't for the other failing parts on the phone (haptic engine, for one) I'd think more about the battery replacement option. It's just hard to invest money in it, not knowing what'd be next to fail, and needing to travel for work next week and not wanting to worry about it. So instead I threw money at my old 6 and had the screen fixed. I tested its battery and despite two plus years of service time in my hands as well as being used when I bought it, it's still got 88% of it's original battery life. So I'll rock that for the next few weeks. FYI - I was able to get in touch with Apple support (via Twitter) and while they wouldn't say how bad the battery was they could confirm that it failed diagnostic testing. It was pretty amazing that within 8hrs of tweeting at them I had a senior tech support guy on the phone performing remote diagnostics and offering to facilitate the battery replacement either at an Apple store or sending it in.

  5. Today I went to my office to pack my stuff. I'll be starting a new job on the 4th of December, I have 8.5 days of day off and I need to finish them before my last date. So I'm on a 2 week holiday now I guess. About time I got some salary increments.

  9. Wow - Malcolm Young. AC/DC played the University I was at (Southampton, UK) in 1975 or 1976. This was in the dining hall on a makeshift stage we used to build out of Dexion framing and floorboards. As one of the crew that used to build the stage and help the roadies haul gear out of the trucks, you got to see the concert free. Saw some great bands back then on that tiny stage. It was before my time there, but The Who even played there as did Zeppelin. These megabands played to a student audience, with zero security. Capacity was about 500 crammed in like sardines. But AC/DC defeated me. Even aged 20 or so, I found them to be ear splittingly loud. So instead I listened to them through several doors up in the Stage office and even then it was quite loud. But Malcolm Young dying of dementia at the age of 64 is often caused by long term drug use. It is a miracle that Ozzie Osbourne has survived without a terminally fritzed brain. And Manson? - good. What a piece of work he was. AC/DC flyer including the Southampton gig Horribly off-topic, but this is Zeppelin in 1973 crammed onto a tiny area at Southampton University old refectory.

  10. Well, the SRX-Plus is still getting love. My wife still likes its sound better than the Carbon. She says the Carbon is too harsh for her, and the SRX is quite petite compared to the humongous Carbon. I used every square inch of the SRX case, but the Carbon is only about 1/2 full. There are albums I like better on the SRX than on the Carbon. For example, my old favorite 'The Yes Album' just sounds better on the SRX than on the Carbon. Can't really explain why. Although my SR-507s are starting to get very worried that I am going to ditch her for an 009 Omega.

  13. The battery tech is pretty mature, but I've seen Li-ion occasionally crap out well before their designed life. It's possible that the battery has bulged, which has in turn damaged the vibration motor. In that case, Apple would almost certainly give you a replacement refurb phone. You could probably send it to them. That way you could easily turn around and sell the replacement (assuming) and recoup some of the cost of the replacement. Anyway, I'm glad you were able to get to the bottom of the issue.

  20. Certainly possible. Trouble is that the nearest Apple store is an hour away, without traffic. I'll try one of the battery health apps and see what the results are. Jacob nailed it. Design capacity of the battery should be 2900mAh, it's down to just 700mAh - yikes. Given that this phone has had some other issues like the vibration motor going I don't think replacing the battery is worth it (throwing good $ at bad). I think I'll chalk this up as the rare iPhone lemon and quit my bitching and move on. A replacement is in the works that'll take care of things in the not-too-distant future and I'll figure something out for my upcoming trip.

  21. Oddly, Whitigir, they are only rated 300V. I got them not sure I would use them, but after visually comparing to the 400V rated ones I also bought, this one simply was better. More clearance from the board and better angle of the wires. Only time will tell if I have any problems, but I sure feel better with these after comparing to the regular 400V black ones from Digikey. And these are far, far away from the trace that a couple folks have had arcing from, so I cannot see that issue coming up for me. Part number 1546074-5-ND With my Carbon up and running, I just spent a half hour listening to Chris Jones' Roadhouses & Automobiles which is a really well mixed and recorded album. I have heard this album probably 100 times, but I was truly shocked by some of the sounds I was hearing. I kept looking around to see where the sound was coming from, but it was the recording. There were several times I was startled hearing things I just did not hear in the same way in the past. Definitely more sound stage, no question there. But also more punch and startling clarity of everything. I am running at 17ma right now, but will retune for 20ma tomorrow and listen some more. That is, if I can get to sleep. I want to stay up all night listening to music!!!!!

  22. No, neither servo engaged. Just got lucky with initial setting. I played with the offset trim and was able to go up to around 25V and then easily down to 0 with a bit of drift. BTW, I did not populate the IC for the opto, just the OP27. Is the OP27 Servo 1 as labeled on the board? And is this the one that does not require the 10V to trigger, so I can just adjust to close to 0 and let it do its work? EDIT: I just finished dialing in balance and offset. Turns out the offset was not as good as I though initially. The balance was WAY off, at 75V. It appears that balance impacts offset, because after getting balance to 0, the offset was then off about 20V, but easily got that down to 0 also. On both boards, I am able to get balance to < 100mV with a bit of drift over time, and offset to < 500mV, again with minor drift over time. Both servos turned off (header not connected). I am now going to re-check the 17ma setting for the 4 outputs and let it run for about an hour. Then, depending on the thermal state, I will move up to 20ma and redial all the settings. One thing I will say is the amps put out a LOT of heat!! Really surprised by how much. Massive heat sink got warm all over after just 10-15 minutes of testing. EDIT2: I put the jumper on Servo1, and it works quite nicely!! The offset varies +/- 200mV around 0, but holds that range pretty well so far! Does the servo also help with balance? I did not think it did, but for some reason balance is also staying much more stable, going up and down within 200mV of 0. I think I am ready to listen to music. Finger crossed. EDIT3: We have music!!! And it sounds really, really, really great! First impression compared to the SRX-Plus is more clarity to the bass (sharper, punchier) and more clarity in the treble. I jumped a couple times hearing some high treble parts I had not really noticed before in a few songs. Everything just sounds sharper and more technical, if that makes any sense. I need to listen more, but there appears to be more sound stage as well. I am using SR-507s. I can't wipe this smile off my face.

  24. Nothing wrong with liking garbage, just look at SBAF and HF where people think Cavalli Audio made something that approaches high fidelity equipment. You liking doesn't change the fact that it is a joke product and the only reason somebody would compare it to the T8000 or the BHSE is its price. We've seen this before with the Woo WES, one out of three owners I've talked to thought it was the bee's knees but the other 2/3's...thought it was a broken piece of shit. So why would it be on the same par as the BHSE? Because it cost more... Like the Trilogy or not, I could not care less but remember one thing, this is the exact same circuit that Schiit thought was too bad to sell for 1k$ and their implementation was far superior.

  25. For $2000 bookshelves (including stand) I know what I would choose. Ascend Sierra 2 w/ RAAL ribbon. It will use up the budget otherwise wasted on surround speakers, sub, and center channel. You'll need to negotiate for those speakers at a later date, but in the meantime you'll pee your pants at every orchestral soundtrack.

  28. So I do things by specifications. The yggy is a 20 bit monolithic converter, not really designed for audio, and certainly not the fastest settling thing on the planet. Getting that design to do DSD is absolutely impossible without a completely separate DSD section. But it was the first rationally priced thing out there. And that was 3 (??) years ago. The 24 bit - 27 bit R2R things these days (the sign magnitude ones) (even the uncompensated ones) have much better specs, accuracy, speed, glitch energy etc. So it now becomes a matter of whose firmware is best. blurring the lines are hybrid firmware that extends DSD up to 6 bits, upsampling pcm to dsd etc. And for sure the firmware will continue to get better and better. Watching audio-gd, denafrips, holo and soekris duke it out is going to be a great thing for consumers. MSB and T+A and a few other of the high priced spreads (with no reason) are going to have some trouble.
