Some pics of the motor housing restoration / upgrade, as everything got back from the polisher today (excuse the fingerprints). My previous DIY motor housings have just had a top plate with the motor attached. This one actually clamps the motor against a piece of sorbothane sheeting which resulted in a lot less noise at the platter. Now I need to work on the motor controller4 points

Thanks Alan. I'll give that a read. Interesting that it's from back in the day Here's a rendering of what the amp will look like. It will be about 70 x 150 x 24 mm. We're looking at using USB-C PD so we'll be able to run off of most chargers (at least 20W). Power input will have a boost/buck converter so it could run off of 5/9/15/20V chargers. Still some work ahead, but we think we'll be able to fit a DAC in as well.2 points

I stayed up waaay to late last night and watched season 1 of Shetland. (It's only two episodes.) Shetland is a fascinating part of the world for me. It's halfway between Scotland and the Nordic countries geographically and culturally. The accents are as thick as a pony's mane, so all praise to subtitles. The end of season 1 kind of fell apart (as many made for TV tales have a tendency to do) but I quite liked everything leading up to it.1 point

As far as the Native Instruments crossgrade trick goes, I don't know why I shouldn't just post it here since it isn't like some kinda big secret. It has changed a bit since I took advantage of it a long time ago. The idea is to get a free or cheap Kontakt instrument that comes with the full version of Kontakt (there is a Player version which is always free). When I did it, I used the free Senheisser Drum Mic A instrument but I guess that no longer works. Anyway, once you have a full version of Kontakt, you can crossgrade that to a Komplete bundle during a half off sale which is usually a month long during the summer (or something like that). Here's a thread from 2020 from the Reaper Forum (best computer music forum ever IMHO) where they are talking about it. https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=238076&highlight=drummica Like I said, it's been a long, long time since I did this and IIRC I had to do a crossgrade for about $200 and an upgrade for about $200 and in the end I had Komplete Ultimate which was twice that much retail. This can only be done during the summer upgrade/crossgrade sale. It's possible that they may have sales on Komplete bundles that are close to this these days.1 point

Yeah, all great advice and I really appreciate hearing it again, as I’m one of those people who needs to hear things multiple times and needs constant reinforcement of lessons. I’ve been pretty good so far, only have Trash, Arturia Collection, and a basic orchestral collection from VSL. But yeah, I need to learn those 50% or less tricks, will DM you this weekend.1 point

Here is part of the controller - a battery charger circuit named after Zeus’ favorite projectile. Apparently I can’t center the white box on the side where the circuit notes go, but otherwise looks pretty slick - about the size of a matchbox. Won’t be solar powered, as the LT3652 datasheet might suggest though the stacked TH and SMD connectors are from JST.1 point
