This has been an interesting comparison. After reading on both devices I've made a final decision and am returning one of them. The Kindle is years ahead in terms of software polish. Everything works, the interface is super slick, the store and Goodreads integration are both done to perfection. The e-ink display tuning is just right, the screen refreshes enough that ghosting is never really an issue. The Kobo interface on the other hand has some jank. It'll display content faster than the screen can refresh, there will be ghosting, navigation is clunky. That all being said, once you are actually reading a book instead of navigating, I prefer the Kobo. The bigger screen, seemingly more contrast-y display and seemingly better backlight make it my preferred device for actually reading books. The lack of polish in the Kobo interface doesn't matter once I get font and formatting settings dialed in and start actually reading. So Kindle is headed back to Bezos. It is a great device and I'd recommend it without qualification, but I like the Kobo better and there is no reason to keep both.
  2. Ennui is three syllables? The good news is that the beard was not lost in vain because the atmospheric river flowed right through the drains we cleaned without backup.
  3. Yeah Frisco is on Keppra and CBD Oils but these last ones seem to be getting worse. Going to have to get him in to a true neurologist I think.

    Plus the Kobo has Updike.

  9. It’s a small rip, a couple of millimeters. I guess a return for repair is the only option. But the headphone is not completely useless. I use Roon and its signal processor, -12dB on good side and +6 dB on bad (damaged) side. Playing at low to normal level the headphone sounds really nice. I imagine the small wound will grow larger by time. Changing the cable on 007 shouldn’t be a problem (knock on wood).
  10. Cutting it to the wire so for now this is going to be an ultra-cool open top dog crate. Frisco has had 3 seizures in the last 24 hours so it has been way too hard to get anything done these days. I think I need to stick to much smaller projects as I just cannot find the room to work on these large ones.
  11. Well… I’ve finished the work with the new headphone and it ended in a disaster. I decided to resolder all solder points, so I took the driver package a part. Even removed the small cable connector. After cleaning all solder points, I connect outer stator and put into its position. It was a bit tricky to arrange the short wire in the connector house. Next was the diaphragm and here I made the disastrous mistake and got a scratch on the membrane when I should solder its wire. I guess I’m getting to old and clumsy for this kind of delicate work. Nowadays I have to wear headband magnifier which also makes it more difficult. Anyhow, I finished the assembly and have one good side and one bad with a small defect on membrane. After visual inspection with good light and magifier I don’t think the lower loudness had anything with dust or any foreign particles to do nor bad connections. So, I really should had waited for this… Thanks a lot, Wachara and Birgir!
  12. It seems I’m running out of luck. SR-X9000 was the best headphone I’ve listened to only for a couple of days. You better keep your Omega, Andy. Today the Stax have a terrible unbalance. Left side is more than 12dB lower then right side. It was left side I opened, lifted inner stator and flipped as you see on picture a few posts above, removed plastic ring and easily lifted the diaphragm and gently held (didn't touched the membran) it in hand for a short while before I put it back. Could that be the reason or is just an unfortunate coincidence? No worry though. It’s a calculated risk and mostly nothing bad happens. If just had been something cheaper. 😭
  13. Ha, thanks! Birgir likes dark stuff, so he'll probably say, OMG these are so bright 😜.
