  1. Yesterday we visited Sterling Pond, which just so happens to be the highest elevation trout pond in Vermont

  2. Saw The President Fly into Marin via HMX-1 to fund raise, as part of his busy schedule. The dry run on Friday had set NextDoor a-Twitter, and today was no different. There was some minor excitement beforehand as some aviators hadn't done their homework, and needed to be reminded up close and personal. NORAD were on it The V22's were impressive And then the fundraiser in chief arrived. Departed to shmooze his donors. And things went back to almost normal.

  3. I’m neither good at landscape or square format, but when you lug the nearly five pound Zeiss 50mm Distagon, Hassy 500cm, 42307 45 Prism, and CFV II 50c back (forgot the monopod) into a park last weekend, you try. Here are my best Bon Iver album covers.

  4. Catching up a bit on the notables. I have of course been listening to music, but just not posting. So a few things I liked. All Your Life: A Tribute to the Beatles Al Di Meola 2013 https://album.link/i/1564096794 Example: So to answer the question, do we need another Beatles tribute album? AbsaFuckingLootly. When it is our Friend Al. It is more like you are just sitting down with him and he is just jamming and picking on some Beatles tunes. Which I guess he is. Very enjoyable. And not too many demands on the royal ear. The Dharma Wheel Howlin Rain 2021 https://album.link/i/1574474906 Example: Need some 70's rock in a modern package? Have I got a deal for you. New to me, and I want to explore. Pretty straight forward, other than some monster works that rock hard. LIVE Chick Corea Akoustic Band 2019 https://album.link/i/1548821481 Example: Not much to say - it is just so good. Just a killer set. Hodges: Front and Center, Vol. 1 Owen Broder 2022 https://album.link/i/1689273550 Example: New to me - but put together a really nice set. Ears and eyes open for me. Reckless Morgan Wade 2021 https://album.link/i/1578973602 Example: I first heard Morgan in December, and I was hooked on her voice. Well her first album backed that up. Strong vocals, and some powerful messages. There are a few more mainstream in there, but it was a rewarding album. Okay think that I am caught up. - Back to listening.

  8. This is more "Burn in Hell" than RIP, but it is noteworthy: NH Nazi Leader Dead Day After Teatotaller Incident in Concord. Now there's a line. There's a zoomer meme that's appropriate here.

  12. absolutely not. topping has potted modules including the bias module that are not available as spare parts. topping has a custom switching supply that may not easily be substituted. every one of these is likely to be dead in less than 5 years. where 40 year old stax amps continue to function even though all the silicon is obsolete. topping is flavor of the month throw away garbage.

  13. Maybe a very old SRM-1 Mk2 has some obsolete parts but the rest can all be replaced either directly or by substituting close parts. Anything after that can also easily be fixed. Now how long we will have HV TO220 parts is not clear but I've lost count of how many SRM-1 Mk2's I've fixed over the years and none were a complete write-off.

  19. Sorry I missed this. The master touch comes with these Weber Charcoal baskets which makes it easy to set up dual zone cooking. They also make a cone shaped heat deflector for more options. I also forgot to mention that Peter is in his last week of his wilderness EMT course and he is having a blast He is in the orange sweatshirt.

  20. Congrats on the '91 NA Miata. She's a beauty! Dedicated track rats usually modify the suspension (tires!), brakes, and cooling first before touching the powerplant. The Miata has huge aftermarket support and a bunch of official Spec Miata racing series as well as decades of excellence in grassroots racing. If I was going to tinker on one (with some money), I'd get the older 2016-2018 MX-5 RF, as Mazda increased engine power in the 2019 onwards cars. Upgrading to forced induction and coilovers would increase speed and flatten the body motion Mazda engineered into the ND MX-5 suspension. The MX-5 RF is generally considered a hard top at least for lapping days, so you wouldn't need to install a roll bar or cage until reaching higher levels of competition.

  21. I dug out and fired up my 30D for the first time in 6? 7? 8? years today. There were a number of false starts. I had to set the time (it had only lost half an hour, which is amazing) and it didn't like the first three CF cards I fed it. Finally, it stopped complaining and I tried some shots with 50/1.4. Confirming things worked, I immediately reached for my ancient Meyer-Optik Orestor 135mm F/2.8 "bokeh monster." My purpose was to photograph to old old widgets that belonged to my grandfather. I had the benighted notion to post the images to reddit's /r/whatisthisthing, but that subreddit has a slew of poorly defined rules and an aggressive AutoMod bot so they can individually and collectively go F themselves. With that said, I took a whole bunch of artistically questionable shots of two 19th century objects while making egregious and unnecessary use of a shallow depth of field: Old East German glass is a hoot. See more here and more broadly my use of manual focus lenses here.

  22. Yeah, that's my recommendation as well. A SRM-1 Mk2, SRM-3, SRM-313 all walk over this thing. Sure the older ones need some new electrolytics at this point but it's a much better sounding system. L300's are also not as good as the x07 series was but quick mod, remove the stupid screen inside the earpads, remove the earpads and take out the 4 screws. Swap the back panels between left and right and fix them back into place so they are reversed from where they were before. Helps clear up the imaging of them.
