^^ intersting - sampled a few tracks, didn't catch me to start with, but intrested to check it out futher. Catching up.. Comin' Home Baby Mel Tormé 1962 https://album.link/i/59401055 Example: A fun Album by Mel, with the example being a highlight. Need to have some more Mel in my world. Samara Joy Samara Joy 2021 https://album.link/i/1616970429 Example: Such a lovely voice with dynamics and power. Very well recorded set of mostly standards. Meteora 20th Anniversary Edition Linkin Park 2023 https://album.link/i/1668484895 Example: Worthy of revisiting. A well recorded album that is layered really well and is able to hit hard when it wants to. I didn't need all the live versions, but I enjoyed listening to the album again. There are a few other things, but those are some highlights.4 points

I agree, somewhat. Ive basically given up on portable headphones/IEMs for my Airpod Max but still use the rigs if they are near. But the wireless products from Apple are oh so convenient and sound pretty good.1 point

Doubtful. Generative AI creates based upon what it has consumed. It has currently consumed everything. While the pattern recognition models will get better, some increasing percentage of what it consumes in the future will be AI generated, and that recursion will make the hallucinations worse, not better. To be better, the AI would need to be able to differentiate between AI generated and not AI generated, and it can't.1 point

I elected to exclude some feet photos which are a non-euclidean nightmare they'd make Yog-Sothoth wince. I've still got a whole folder full of cursed AI images yet to go. The real horror here is the AI itself. Right now it's at the "haha that's so funny it's trying to make something real" phase. In a shorter time than we can imagine, it will be nearly impossible to identify AI images. I'm sure we will have people who becomes experts in the field, but that will not stop the era of disinformation from accelerating further. "Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in."1 point

IN this series, THD+N versus frequency, 20 Hz - 20 kHz. At the equivalent of 100 dB SPL (100 V RMS). THD Is Very very even all the way from 20-20k. at about 0.2% THD. In this series, the THD+N at 110 dB SPL is actually LESS than at 100 equivalent dB SPL, telling us that the measurement mostly consists of noise, not THD. That's all the Carbon measurements I have on hand.1 point

In this series, Mjolnir KGSS HV Carbon noise floor in equivalent SPL is around or below -15 dB SPL. That's MINUS 15 dB SPL, folks. Aha! In this series, I took the IMD with an SPL scale. So at the equivalent of 90 dB SPL for the Stax 007 Mk 2, here's the IMD. It's much lower than the previous IMD measurement, which must have been taken near clipping. Of course there is no meaning to equivalent SPL for a 19-20 kHz signal! But the scale is calibrated for SPL at 1 kHz so you get the idea of the amplitude of the test signal. Here, not so overloaded you can see VERY little 1 kHz difference product at the equivalent SPL of about -2 dB SPL! And no trace of 18 kHz or 21 kHz IMD. So at these already extreme levels, at extreme high frequency levels that would not be found in normal music, the Carbon HV performs exemplararily (if that's a word).1 point

In this series, the right channel freq response is nearly identical so not worth displaying here. Just below clipping, equivalent SPL of 113.4 dB SPL at 1 kHz, produces 0.025% THD. I have an attenuator and by accident, apologize for the inconsistency, the scale is dBu, but my notes say 113.4 dB SPL equivalent. That is a remarkable 467 V RMS. THD is 0.024/0.026% THD at that point. In this series, Mjolnir 19-20 khz IMD. The amplitude of the 18 and 21 kHz products is not exceptional, but to my ears this is still one of the the nicest, most natural and warmest Stat amp I have ever heard. IMD measures 0.018/0.021%. Amplitude is not specified, but I suspect given my scales, it's near 100 V for either one of the partials.1 point

In this series. I like to mark levels in equivalent SPL. Based on the 100 volt RMS rating of the CRBN headphones. So this is close to 100 Volts RMS. Mjolnir spectrum at 97 dB equivalent SPL at 1 kHz. As you can see, it's pure second harmonic with no other trace of harmonic distortion. Second harmonic is at the equivalent of about 10 dB SPL! In this series, KGSS Carbon HV left channel frequency response. I'm using a transfer function with white noise, so for whatever reason at above 60 kHz, the transfer function goes funky and is unreliable. The amp is flat from 10 Hz and only -0.6 dB at 60 kHz!1 point

Someone asked me for my equivalent measurements of the Mjolnir KGSS Carbon HV. OK, I have a bunch of measurments. To keep them separate as it seems that image files don't automatically get labels in this forum, I'm going to post them one at at a time. Forgive me if I'm mistaken, the easiest thing for me to do is make one post at a time. Where you see the rising high frequency response at the high end, that's the noise shaping of my Prism ADC/DAC which I use for analysis in conjunction with Spectraplus. Note that at the time I made these measurements I was not aware that it would be advantageous to add a 100 pf capacitor on the load. So these are open loads, and perhaps some of the tiny ringing you see would go away. The first is a digital scope photo of a 1 kHz Square wave at 200 volts p-p from my Fluke Scope. Attached here. In this series Mjolnir KGSS Carbon 100 Hz Square wave 250 V p-p1 point

from my own limited experience, the loss of export sales is always 10x whatever could be saved by buying components from the country with the weaker currency. in theory RK50 pots should have dropped 50%, but they're actually up 50% from a few years ago1 point

I finished Succession. I was a bit late to the game on this one, but I have my reasons. I tried watching Season 1 back when it originally aired but I couldn't understand why people liked the show. Sure, there was wealth-porn for those that are in to that kind of thing, but the characters were so off-putting that I ended up tuning out about 3-4 episodes in. Fast forward to this year, and I decided to give the show another try given how buzzy people were talking about their final season. The critical excitement over the show served as a sort of implicit promise that if you can make it through season 1 that the journey is worth it. Now, having reached the end, I would say I enjoyed the show... but not anything more than that. This felt almost like a hate-watch as I really didn't cheer for any of the main characters. They all felt like such terrible people. Kendall had the energy to do the job but was a buzz-word loving airhead. Siobhan had the brains but over-played her hand and walked in to traps at every opportunity. Roman was just a monster. Like his dad but with none of his dad's redeeming qualities. Also as a beneficiary of of nepotism myself there was a certain amount of uncomfortableness in having that reflected back at me. Still, quality show, well acted, high production values, but not necessarily one I'd vouch for. I don't regret my time watching it but if they came out with a fifth season I am not sure I'd be excited to tune back in. The premise wore out its welcome for me sometime at the beginning of the last season.1 point

Absolutely delicious! This will immediately be put into my repertoire. This dish would probably be very good with just the squash and tomatoes. But the caramelized onions add such a depth of flavor. I may try a little balsamic vinegar next time, as I think it would pair very well.1 point

I'm going to attempt a French Tian, because it looks and sounds incredible. I'm carmelizing the onions ahead of time, but will start the veg prep later.1 point

I thought Sony already had a decent headphone lineup. I don’t really get this move. Great news for Audeze, on the other hand! I hate to say it, but I wouldn’t want to be getting in to the high end headphone market. At least as an apple user their stuff is so solid and the wireless connection so convenient that more often than not I’ll just put on the air pod max rather than fire up the main headphone rig.1 point
