March 9, 20251 yr My favorite version of my favorite song by REM. I saw this concert and the extra drumstick on the chair was really effective live Edited March 11, 20251 yr by dsavitsk
March 11, 20251 yr A little late for Ravel's 150th, but this was my great (ahem) gateway to Ravel's orchestrating genius. I heard his orchestration before I heard Mussorgsky's solo piano version, and have since fallen in love with his genius. Even from his treatment of the opening Promenade, there's a bit more breadth, a bit more gravitas, a bit more there there. Not afraid to solo instruments, or interleave solo instruments against a delicate backdrop of small subsets of the orchestra, it is a masterpiece of restraint. cf. "The Old Castle" movement All the better to contrast the bombast. cf. "The Great Gates of Kiev" movement
March 18, 20251 yr Author I've been thinking about it for a few decades now, and this is still my absolute favorite song. Edited March 18, 20251 yr by Hopstretch
March 20, 20251 yr ^^ Every time I meet someone named Sharon I think in my head about "...sharing Sharon's outlook on the topic of disease...." 🤣
March 21, 20251 yr I'm rewatching, Northern Exposure. What a great show. So unique. Anyway, I forgot that they would always finish each episodes with a legitimately good song. The last episode I watched played this song that I had completely forgotten about. It's an absolute masterpiece. warning: it may bring out emotions.

March 27, 20251 yr Author I think this is one of the better songs ever written about dealing with the reality of death and losing your loved ones. It's kind of funny that its delivered here while yukking it up on the Tonight Show. Makes me cry every single fucking time.
March 27, 20251 yr Jay Leno is such a douche it's unbelievable. I'm about to lose my brother and I'm having a good cry watching this.
April 2, 20251 yr Author I hear this one as you carry the people you love with you always, even after they leave this life. Edited April 2, 20251 yr by Hopstretch

April 10, 20251 yr Author Alec and I were trading mid-90s rock bangers via text and it's the usual stuff you'd expect, but I got him with this one he'd never heard before. I love educating the younger generation. Edited April 10, 20251 yr by Hopstretch
