  3. Sudamericano by Leonardo Andersen (2026) https://open.qobuz.com/album/ytv241s3u2iqc Example: Nothing really groundbreaking here, but very nice. Well recorded and well played.
  4. The internet's come a long way in the last 17 years. ... or has it?

I recently acquired a dpa 4017 shotgun but I haven’t used it in the field yet. those tascam recorders are pretty long in the tooth at this point, but I haven’t used them to compare to other options

PetaPixel's useful primer video on shotgun mics started me down the rabbit hole again: Apples and oranges, I don't have a fancy camera, so researching field recording stereo mics again brought me to binaural microphone rigs (like the Roland CS-10EM or DPA 4560) and the the Shure MV88+ and Rode iXY-L stereo microphones for iPhone: https://audioservices.studio/review/microphones-for-iphone For an all-in-1 - the Tascam Portacapture X6 looks reasonable for an all-rounder (this is its bigger brother, the X8):

  9. Yeah, I'm not surprised as they are essentially a pile of caps stacked on top of each other. They are the easy solution but there are ribbon cables out there. I really like the 20AWG silicone rubber one which was rated to 600V but in did far more in testing. The new cable on the EH-1's is excellent, very much like the Wide PC-OCC Stax cable but with smaller conductors. Even the Monolith electrostatics from Monoprice had custom cables on them back in the day. Btw. here is a picture of the ebay Stax braided cable for posterity:
  10. I’ve bought some braided cables on Taobao, even the best among them has a capacitance per unit length roughly double that of the parallel-style cables used from Stax
  11. I'm enjoying this channel -- lots of cool unique versions. https://youtube.com/@caffinated80s-tt2oc That version of Moving in Stereo at the top is (fire)
  12. I thought I'd see if any of these cables are out there and what do we have here: Ebay Stax cable I bought one to do some testing on it but who thinks those wires can handle 1kV and are low capacitance...
  13. Although I live in a few blocks from Moffett Field/NASA Ames/Google's private airport I rarely go through security. Strangely they get a little nervous with random people going "off course" and taking photos. ;) Plus the Space Bar has been closed for a while. An author was speaking this weekend though so swung by and snapped a few shots afterward. Leica SL2-S and, what's been mostly glued on lately, Light Lens Lab 35mm f/1.4 Double Aspherical "11873".
  14. Rokia Traoré's Né So Ex. Edit: Looks like she has an old Tiny Desk too.
  15. Techmoan buys 3 video disc players to see how well they function as CD players, and creates a spreadsheet to evaluate them.
  16. I was a weird little kid. No surprise there. As a youngster and up until present times, I loved things kids weren't supposed to like. Spinach and liver are good examples. The only two people in my family that liked liver were myself and my Mother. Especially chicken livers! One day back in the 70's, my Father took my Mother to a new restaurant for lunch. She noticed on the breakfast menu a chicken liver omelet. She intended to go back and try it sometime. One day it was just her and I running errands, and she remembered this restaurant close by. We both had the chicken liver omelet and both loved it. I have no idea why I haven't recreated this omelet to date, but today is the day! Delicious!!!
  17. Damn, never seen that happen. Most of the wires that I come across are just plated aluminum, even the silver wires as they just dual coat with copper and then with silver. It's super easy to check, just cut a bit of insulation off and hit it with a mini blowtorch or a hot lighter. If the wires curl up, that's aluminum. It is clearly a crap cable off aliexpress and there are plenty of ribbon cables available. It's just lazy and bad engineering. With the Hongshu EH-1 out now, this will be a very tough sell. I have no idea of the price but the EH-1 is 650$ with an amp and they are pretty damn good. Also no venting on the drivers there...
  18. Hello all Build CFA3 version 1.22 near to be finished. Will try to use GaN transistors PSU for it. With greate helps from other members cleared that trimports: RV1 for offset, RV2/RV3 for bias (equal to 0R for testing). Only ZF mode, +- 30V PSU. All good but it is something wrong in build, very high power consumprion: 10W preamp board and about 100W amp for one channel. Tested: all leds LTL-4221NLC resolded and tested MJF15030/MJF15031 - all good all resistors, that340, pzta06/pzta56, 1n914 - all good no soldering joints Seems like jeneral problem which met bdinnev, Satyrnine and others. I am worry to run too long time with such high power consumption, so only 3-5 secs and power down. Both channels with same problem. All leds on preamp boards are on. So what else could be tested, how you think? May be change gain R50/R51=1900 on something else? And is it possible to check preamp and amp boards separately?
  19. There was a guy on another thread who recently bought some cable from China, and randomly found that a magnet stuck to it. It was iron wire with a thin copper coat. And what a stoopid idea of them using braided cable, and ridiculously short. High capacitance (usually around 50 to 100pF/m, or even more) and very low inductance (sub uH/m). Oh and use the hardback version of Art of Electronics 1.5m would add at least 75 - 150pF!!!

  24. Finally finished UFO, started on Space: 1999. Ohmigosh, no wonder my mom wouldn't let me watch this when I was a kid, it was frequently horrific.
  25. Colin From Accounts: An Aussie-based comedy centered around two people who are brought together by a car accident & an injured dog who they agree to care for. Occasionally annoying, but overall funny, and an easy watch. Good palate-cleanse in between other more intense shows.
