Headphones

Since the other HF-2 thread has become quite a mess, figured it'd be a good idea to start a new one for people to post their impressions in.

I was able to listen to both of them for about 30 minutes and I thought they both sounded good. I think they are both in a similar league of headphone, being the best in each category. They are also around the same price. I guess the HD800 has an advantage of having more amplifiers available to be used with it. Has anybody had to chance to listen to both? What are your impressions as far as detail, being musical, or other preferences? I'm leaning towards the HD800, can anybody convince be that the Stax are better.

Seems like Audio Technica is releasing an update model to their ATH-ANC7 called ATH-ANC7b. Audio Technica said the improvements made to the model include new electronics (not sure if they meant drivers, noise canceling or both), redesigned earcups for better comfort, the battery is easily accessible, and the package now has long and short cables. It should be available by August for the retail price of $220. New ATH-ANC7b QuietPoint headphones

Has anybody heard the Senn HD238's? I am currently using PX100's for portable and am looking to replace them. From what I have read, seems like they may be a decent choice.

This time we are looking at some IEM or just entry level Shure. They are designed to work with music players on-the-go with high noise isolation. Bundle Nothing really special here, 4 sets of silicon tips of different sizes, a carrying case, a extender cable (you will need it useless you hang your iPod on your face.) Build Real solid product, looks and feels like it can withstand many years of abuse from me. I was reading various Sony brochures, but still can't figure this out. Will ECR500 box work with ECR 600 and vice versa? Does anyone here have ECR600 box? I will have two ECR500 boxes soon and would gladly trade ECR600 box for one of my 500 boxes it it will work with ECR500 to check out what the differences are.

These East Indian Rosewood woody Grado 225s were the biggest and nicest surprise for me at CanJam bar none. Who knew Nate could not only build nice cables and amps, but is more than pretty handy with a lathe? The pics, as often happens, don't do them justice, but I'm loving the looks, and, lucky me, they also sound good. Thanks again Nate and Dan.

Oops, I mean $40k. But it has to be a complete system. I've been thinking about downsizing. Any advice? Newbie here. Things seem a little turned upside down here. Could anyone point out the precise differences between the Stax SR-202 and the SR-303? I understand that the difference between the '303 and '404 is only the cable, but I was wondering what about the '202? I have read something about it somewhere (how's that for being vague.. . Maybe in the Stax thread), but I am unable to trace it back. Thanks for the help!

I've been thinking of picking up a pair of closed headphones again. I used to own the Beyer DT250-250 a long time ago based on Headroom's ancient recommendation and liked them. Tried the AKG K271S when it first came out and liked the midrange but disliked the strange quality of what bass there was (no impact at all). Haven't really been following closed cans since. I heard that shure had changed the shure se530 cable formula in order to fix cable broken issue. Anyone know information about that? As I read on heafi, Shure changed the formula on June 08, so is it correct?

A comment in the HD800 thread got me thinking about warranties. . . Excluding earpad replacement how long do the headphones that currently sell for $500+ actually last without needing repair and how easy is it to get these fixed by the manufacturers once they do break ? The warranty policies I could spot with a brief search were Koss Sennheiser AKG that and to contact the dealer first were all I could find from the AKG website about warranty duration. Audio Technica bought within europe = 2 years warranty bought within US/Canada = 1 years warranty .

Bought a bad tube off of eBay, and it looks like something happened and it fried my right driver. I thought it was just the tube, but a few days later when I powered my amp back up with new tubes, the problem was still there. Its hard to imagine this pair being busted: it was the third headphone I bought and the only one I kept. It's been with me since 2005. Anyway, anyone ever have any experience with Sennheiser after warranty repairs? Was wondering if its worth it to mess with them or if I should just scope out a used pair, or upgrade to the HD800. Currently I'm rocking the KSC75 out of the HA-2, and it sounds great.

As most of you know, the new Stax Lambdas suck compared to the older models. This "fact" has puzzled me for quite a while since the same drivers mounted in either the SR-Sigma or the 4070 housings just sing. In the case of the Sigmas, the Sigma 404 out paces the other two Sigma models in every area I can think of by a large margin. To make a long story short, I picked up an old, beaten up SR-404 in Japan to test out some theories. I could have bought a new one but half the fun is to take some old, neglected banger and make them shine again. I have been having pain in my left ear, I went to the Dr. and he said my ear was inflammed and gave me antibiotics. I stopped wearing headphones for a few weeks and my ear felt better. Yesterday I put my favorite headphones on (HD 600) and my ear began to hurt again. The pain is located around the tragus (towards nose not canal) it started with sensitivity to volume and higher pitches now it is just a pain relating to pressure from the headphones. Guys, I may be in the market for some headphones. Knowing next to nothing about what's out there, I could use suggestions. Basically, I own two sets of phones. Etymotic 4p's that I bought in 2001 or 2002, and RS-1's I bought in 2003. I use the ety's when I am on airplanes, and that's about it. They are kind of OK, but the banging cord is too annoying. I love the RS-1's -- enough that I haven't really thought about buying anything else for almost 6 years. But, I need some office phones. I am looking for $200 or less. Used is fine but they need to be findable quickly. Open is OK, but the Grados probably leak too much sound. Other things -- punchy (Grado-esque) bass …

Do my Dad really enjoyed himself at the NYC Meet. He liked the people and had a great time listening to the awesome rigs. He used to be an audio enthusiast (stereo/speaker, not headphone) and I think the Meet might have rekindled the flame. It's cool because he's nearing retirement and will need a hobby or he will drive my mother insane. And he's asked me to recommend a starter rig.
