Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Started by Jon L,

There was the original Abyss, then Abyss Phi, then Phi CC, and now Abyss Phi TC... I don't know what came over me, but the 10% Black Friday sale didn't help. 1208191031_HDR by drjlo2, on Flickr

Introduction A headphone review! I haven't had a new pair of cans in a while, but these were on sale during Black Friday – I paid a little over $100 for them. I've been looking for an inexpensive set of open headphones like my old Sennheiser HD 320: https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/sennheiser-hd-320.21653/reviews The first thing to mention is that you get 2 sets of cables in the box, the longer 10 ft. cable (attached to the left ear cup) with a 1/4" jack and a shorter 4 ft. cable with a 1/8" jack as well as a 1/4" female to 1/8" male jack adapter. The HD 599 SE ships in a plain cardboard box, as it is an Amazon special with a 2-year warranty. Immediate…

  4. Generally speaking, I'm mostly listening to Lo-Fi Music, Hip-Hop, and Punk-Rock. Here are 2 sample songs for each aforementioned genre: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiljpJc5pzlkTTyVsLGEoS5hS4tkyaMsh Intended use I listen to music at any time & any place, meaning that I really prefer headphones that are noise-protecting. Speaking from my personal experience, I'm a big fan of IN-EAR and OVER-EAR headphones. They feel naturally comfortable to me and that's generally a big brownie point. Please don't hesitate if you have any further questions or ideas! THEREFORE Super many Thanks in Advance! I genuinely appreciate the privilege of being able to…

  5. HEDD-ADAM ATM we are beyond thrilled to announce HEDDphone® - the first full-range headphone design based on HEDD / ADAM founder and speaker veteran Klaus Heinz’ world-known Air Motion Transformer driver!! The Air Motion Transformer (AMT) is an electrodynamic transducer that allows to move air significantly faster than common voice coil, magnetostatic (planar) or electrostatic systems. Their traditional piston-like movement is overcome by a folded diaphragm that squeezes out air four times faster: A breakthrough for capturing more details in any audio recording. In order to reproduce the complete audible frequency band (and beyond), HEDDphone® introduces VVT® techno…

These look quite interesting: https://raalrequisite.com/sr1a-earfield-monitors/ Maybe someone needs to take one for the team, possibly me. These interest me only because it seems to be a different presentation, more speaker-like. Of course I would need a nice speaker amp design to build for these, Kevin ?. Thoughts?

Hi, I'm in the process of fixing up a HE60 I found in very poor condition. I've replaced the pads and headband, and thankfully the plastic housing is in pretty good shape. The cable seems like its the stock cable, but with a very shoddy stax retermination. The previous owner took very poor care of them and listened to them for years with a Woo Audio amp, and unsurprisingly the drivers are on their last legs (intermittent pops and high pitch whining when plugged into an amp). Thankfully I also have found some new old stock replacement drivers. I also have found a replacement orpheus cable with a 4.7 MOhm bias resistor. Unfortunately, when it comes to soldering an…

  9. Started by Arthed,

Hey guys, need advice from your infinite wisdom. I recently lost my Shure SE425, therefore I need new earbuds. As good as they were, they lacked bass for me. As a beasshead, Im now looking for earbuds that have extreme bass, don't really mind compromising over quality of the rest of the spectrum (I have an HD650 for audiophile listening). I don't really have a max budget, but if it could remain under 500$, that'd be awesome. Also, I will be driving them with my phone's headphone jack, no portable amp (I just hate addtionnal bulk in my pockets). Thanks in advance. UPDATE: managed to find some XB90EX brand new for 100usd shipped, thanks everyone

I see these over in the other place. $500 Stat, based on pro bias. New offering from India. It said in the thread Spritzer will be getting a set. True, lies, or Trumpism?

  11. Started by spritzer,

When I heard these were being released I just had to get a set to see if they matched the supreme crap that the original was. Now after some delays I picked the set up from the postoffice. This first post will focus mostly on the amp, the headphones will be taken apart at a later date. I have been listening to them for a few hours now so some quick impressions are in order though. Same build quality as we've come to expect from Hifiman...i.e. absolute fucking trash. First off, the phones stink badly. These are 1500$ on their own so much like the Shangri-La JR... everything is nasty synthetic crap. Same cable as the Shangri-La and Jr. use which is c…

Just lost my Vsonic GR02 Bass Edition ☹️?And can't find it anywhere to buy as it seems they don't make them anymore....So i need help choosing a new IEM's.Is there something that sounds good like the GR02 BE? for the 60$ price range?

  13. Now here is something that has been out for a while but I've never really looked into. Now these carry a wide variety of names and there is a plethora of models but they are all pretty much the same, hybrid units with an electret driver to cover the top end and a regular dynamic driver for the rest of the spectrum. I decided it was time to look into this so I bought two units, the Mitchell and Johnson GL2 and some Cyberdrive unit for 30$ which looked the same as the GL2 minus the wood. The GL2 arrived first so some pics: Here the baffle which shows how the drivers are setup Small transformer and 10uf/50V NP cap are all there is to this and th…

Well...these arrived this week via the Gilmore express and to make it easier for anybody looking for info on them, a new thread it is. As Kevin documented before, the amplifier is a dinky little thing and a direct clone of the Stax SRM-001. The amp is pretty much useless though as it doesn't have any volume control and you can't use it from a portable device as it needs a full 2Vrms input signal to reach usable volume levels. Here is a picture of the entire system plus what Kevin Posted: Opamp feeding a quad of fet's and into the output transistors. All AC coupled... Yet again another clone of older Stax stuff but onto the headphone…

  16. Started by spritzer,

So I've officially fallen off the wagon again as I got one of these just now. I swore I was done buying headphones but clearly not... So I just put them on my head so listening impressions will come later but first some over all impressions. Now the case...the case is super retarded whoever came up with should be patted on the back for being super "special". It's pretty much Head-fi in a case form, has wank factor off the scale but is utterly useless. Way, way too heavy too. Now the cable, from the outside it looks well enough made but I will open it up to see what's inside. The pins on the plug were all bent and it looks like the whole front of the plug has b…

  17. So I've had these headphones for a bit and have used them with my laptop for a while, and I notice that in quiet songs especially there'll be crackles and static noises far too often for me to like. I use these while connected to my phone, however, and I have no static issues at all. My previous headphones attached to the laptop didn't have any issues either. Do I just have a defective pair of headphones? And if so, can I do anything about it? (They're refurbished so idk if that matters or not)Rufus MapQuest UpToDate

  18. Started by EdipisReks1,

I'm not in a position to buy these phones at the moment (medical bills are fun!), but the reviews that I've read suggest that they are the phones I've been looking for, and I should be financially whole, and hopefully healthy, in early 2019. Has anybody had a chance to listen to them yet? I'd drive them with my KG-perfected SP Extreme.

Hi! I'm a Sennheiser fan and enjoying my HD 579 on my Dragonfly Red but would like to upgrade. I'm having difficulties choosing between the HD 660 S and HD 700 which are both available at around the same price. Any recommendations?

  20. Started by Wizzer,

I just purchased this amplifier and have a couple questions , but first I never used headphones and just getting started and would like some advice which manufacturers of headphones would mate well with the Mjolnir Audio Dynalo Bipolar 2 . A little back ground , the fellow I purchased the Mjolnir from was also selling his Audeze 3 headphones as a package deal however I found these headphones uncomfortable after a 1/2 hour of listening. He suggested a slew of other manufacturers and told me to browse headfi headphone site . I couldn’t make much sense of what I read and doing searches I landed here . i appreciate anyone’s direction to a quality comfortable headpho…

I have a somewhat hard of hearing friend who is looking for a replacement headset for his iPhone. He's mostly looking to get better fidelity for speaking in the ear buds and microphone and will spend up to $100. He would like an ear bud solution and is not interested in IEMs. Any recommendations you can give will be greatly appreciated.

  22. Started by Pars,

On my commute, I have been using Apple Earbuds, which seem to leak a bit of sound. I am normally riding on a train car designated as "Quiet Car" and have had a couple of people look at me if I'm really cranking something, so I was looking for something that didn't leak as much. I know, JH13 I ran across the HifiMan HE400s on innerfidelity, which Tyll seemed to like, and can get these for around $50. I also noticed they have an HE400i (iPhone) or HE400a (Android). From what I can tell, these do not have a microphone, but do have the inline volume control thingy? The reviews seem to indicate that the inline controls are cheap and break. I never really use these, but i…

  25. I just got my MrSpeakers Aeon headphones yesterday. I ordered them with an XLR termination on the cable terminated assuming this meant I could use them with the balanced/XLR output on the GS-X. Then I opened the box and saw it said the headphone was a “single-ended planar magnetic headphone.” I’m confused. Is it fine to use with a balanced output? Is there any benefit? I can order the cable with a SE termination which would be better for portable use anyway.
