I want good headphones for my ipod, but i am getting confused with all this recommendations to get an amp even for IEMs. I don't want an amp, even the ipod is to heavy in my pockets. Please recommend me headphones sounding best directly driven from the ipod. Cheers

I know quite a few of you guys had either at one point, and I wonder what you guys thought about it. First of all, the difference between the two. The dj has line and variable headphone out with the volume knob. The io has line/headphone out and line in. The question is basically about the outputs. The dj headphone out seems like a dedicated headphone thing, while the io seems like it's a combined headphone/line out, BUT the advert claims both have "high quality headphone amps" built in. Recently upgraded car stereo to Alpine CDA9885 so I could use my Ipod in the car. Original plan was to buy Nano and leave it in the car all the time, but have been reading on a few car audio forums that the new Ipods (Nano and Touch specifically) are having problems interfacing with pretty much all car recievers. Don't know this for a fact but that is what I have been reading. Now the plan is to buy new Classic for my everyday use at work and move my 5.5g 30 gig to car. The reason I had originally planned on the Nano was no hard drive to be affected by vibration (if it would). As the title suggests I'm having problems with my brand new DT770/Pro-80 headphones with my 160Gb iPod Classic. The pod pauses the music after a little while as if I had disconnected the headphones (handy feature otherwise, but not here ) Any ideas on what to do to prevent this? The headphones work very well everywhere else, it's just my pod that seems to be incompactible. p.s. Just to clarify, the headphones are connected with a 3.5mm jack

So I was reading a review of the ElectroKID in a recent issue of HFN, and they said that the Krell is one of the few docks that takes advantage of the fact that the iPod actually has a the requirements for a true balanced line out (I.E. both regular and inverse signals). Is that true? Do any of the DIY cable makers take advantage of that fact?

sorry for posting another imod thread. I am deciding on two different options for next tax return. I could get an Imod or a pico with dac. as far as how I would amp the imod I have a emu0404 usb which I would run it through for its internal amp. however I am starting to think the pico would be the better choice. I am also considering buying a small laptop about 11 - 12 inch screen and I already have a large portable hdd. so I am considering using the pico with a lappy instead of imod. if it would sound better through the lappy and pico than imod and emu 0404 than that would be the btter choice. I am selling my ipod classic 160gb on ebay as we speak and I want a new music player that isnt so large. for real portability I want something small and light but some fairly decent hardware under the hood that can really take advantage of my moda vibes or my soon to own yuin pk1s. also i might use the pico with it when i own the pico next year. I would need at least 6gb space. also I have been encoding using apple lossless however I dont know if other players can play them. I doubt it. that would likely force me to encode with another lossless compression method wouldnt it? god that would suck ughh but gotta do what you gotta do I suppose...

It's a 4th gen unit, modded with blackgates from the headphone out, and with a cap-less modded signal path from the lineout, that goes into a Sonicap dock (same as Vcap dock, but smaller & cheaper). My younger brother got a new 80gb Classic for his early graduation present and, as usual, I get his leftover garbage, which is a 60gb ipod with a broken screen. Can anyone suggest a good place to get the screen replaced?

I keep seeing more and more trusted people on headfi saying the Vcap iMod is as enjoyable as Pico dac (albeit they are different in sound signature and qualities). In the past I used to believe iMod was overrated, but now I'm basically convinced I want a Vcap iMod and I'm preparing some big money to get it. So I made a comment about how the portable DVD player my mom got for Christmas was neat. So now they're getting me one for my b-day. I don't know too much about them other than the fact that non of them seem to have decent screens. So any advice on which I should get. Mom's got a Sony and it seems nice, but are there any models that stand out among the rest?

So I got this nice little black nano 8g for $50 when I bought my computer one month before the new ones came out. I haven't really used it, and probably won't much, if ever, but I've been looking at cases, or maybe a skin, and I don't want to bulky it up, but maybe provide some protection (mostly for scratches; not worried about other). I hate the look of those silicon things, and well, so far everything else. I like the small sleek look it has, especially if I ever decide to pair it with my pico when it arrives. I've done searches elsewhere and get too much information to choose from, get annoyed, and stop. Any ideas?

My faithful Creative Zen Touch needs upgrading, and an 80 gb iPod looks like it might be the current sweet spot. From what I have discovered, it looks like if I install rockbox, I can play flac files on an iPod. If I'm right, looks like I need to choose between flac and apple lossless. Ideally, I only want to rip my CDs once. Down the track, I may well start using a squeezebox or something similar in my home system. Are there any sq advantages of one type over the other? What about storage space?

the design for it is horrible! My ears are still in pain from them pushing on the insides of my ears. Excluding that, its probably the best IEM that I've heard (heard things that I didnt even hear with my 225s) even though it has for the weird sibilance and the fatiguing treble (especially with like rock songs ex. ted leo's stuff) So the question is, what sounds like a ER4P/S with a better design that wont destroy my ears? the im716?

My 40gb iPod photo has been acting up the past few weeks, and this morning, it died for the fourth time as I tried to listen to my audiobook during my commute. I had bought this from Best Buy (don't ask me why), and still had their protection plan in place so I took it to their customer service. If I'm lucky, they'll accept it as a lemon and I'll receive a comparable product from the current production as a replacement in 6 weeks. If I'm unlucky, they won't accept it as a lemon and they'll return it to the store in 6 weeks (at which point I can choose to get it repaired). So either way, I'm without my iPod for 6 weeks and we'll see how long before I break down and end …

Maybe you guys could offer some input... For his requirements, this is what I know so far: He cares about audio and build quality. He wants PDF reading capability. And photo capability. I'm probably going to suggest a media player, hard drive based, rechargeable... and a separate mp3 player, flash based, 4-8Gb, with AA or AAA batteries, as being more compact/rugged, and in case he's away from electricity for awhile. I will talk to the guy about portable amps. But ability to sound good without one is important. I could definitely use some suggestions for headphones too. Is it possible to find a high quality PCDP these days. Not concerned with anti-shock (will be used for desktop) or FM tuner. Mainly concerned with build quality, AC capable, and SQ out of lineout. Checked ebay and there are some older players, but can't find any info on them. All the new stuff that I have found seems to be nothing but shit.

I've mostly been using the E-MU0404usb with its built in headphone amp which definitely bottle-necks the built in DAC. But combined with my M^3 the DAC in this soundcard is surprisingly decent. A bit edgy/gritty in the highs and not the biggest/deepest soundstage (compared to the North Star) but otherwise not bad at all for how little it costs. I wonder if it could be improved with a better output (tubed?) stage?
