I Can't Hear You, Speaker Man, I'm Listening to My Headphones

  1. Started by liwei,

Are these a good buy at 380 used? I'm actually trying to save up for the HD800 but speakers have been on my mind recently. I probably won't be able to preorder if I get these but that gives me time to see the reviews I guess. Since a lot of you have experience, could I get some information on how it will sound compared with the HD600/W5000? I'm running them out of flac/Musichall CD25, Northstar M192 and Gilmore Lite with DPS. thanks

  2. Started by postjack,

Good Morning Team! So I've decided 2009 is the year of new speaker amplification. I have no intentions of upgrading my vinyl rig until the distant future, and I'm done with digital sources indefinitely. My speakers are Quad 22Ls, and my current amp is the Cambridge Audio 840A integrated. When I was posting of my out of control bass woes over at Audio Asylum, at least one guy who I've exchanged emails with before said the 840A might be the problem, and that I should look to other amps. Well I don't have bass problems anymore since I moved the speakers into a new room, but I certainly could appreciate some greater control and heft in the bottom end. My issue here …

  3. Hey guys, anyone here tried/own a pair Von Schweikert VR-1 bookshelf speakers? My cousin's friend is selling a brand new pair for $1000. Apparently the guy liked it soo much he bought two pairs back in the day with one serving as backup. The set he is selling is the backup set which is new and unused. I have no experience when it comes to speakers so I

  4. Started by laxx,

So I have a thread going about what speakers I bought. They sound pretty good, but could be better (room conditions, other gear in use). 2009 is going to start off with more audio gear, but I'm not sure where to start. I'll start this by listing the gear I'm currently using. MHDT Constantine+ (coax) -> Onkyo Integrated (pre-out) -> JVC Laboratory M-7050 Power Amp -> AV123 X-Statiks Cabling is just solid core silver from DAC to pre, starquad from pre to power. Zu Julian from power to speakers. I'd like to replace the pre and power, but don't know which to start with. I'm thinking pre as the JVC power amp isn't supposed to be a bad amp at all. If I …

  5. Started by The Monkey,

My rig is near my window and it seems that it is subject to some RF interference. My unshielded XLR cables buzzed, and now I suspect that the speaker cable that came with my AudioEngine 2's is picking up some interference. Is there any quick and easy way to shield the cheap speaker cable?

So there's a local guy selling his Dynaco ST-70 for a pretty fair price ($300) and a pair of Magnepan MMG's ($300) also. I was curious if you guys have any input on the Dynaco amps.

  7. Started by deepak,

I thought this was an interesting read over at an AV forum: Best Sounding Speakers According to Scientific Tests - Audio Video Revolution Forum Random and blind testing with members of the general public choosing their favorite speakers without knowing anything about them (ie cost or looks).

Adcom GFA-5800 or Adcom GFA-5500 Any opinions on the above (or any other amp) in the $500 used price range, give or take? Looking to power my Paradigm Ref 100 v4s Cheers Pete

  9. Hi All- I've been using the following setup in a 10 x 13ft room now for the past several months: Quad 22L Cambridge Audio 840A Cambridge Audio 840C Technics SL1200MK2 Cartridges used include DL-103, AT440MLa, KAB/Ortofon ProS30 Phono's used include Hagerman Bugle (60db gain 100 ohm loading for DL-103) and Bottlehead Seduction (for MM) SVS 20-39 PCi Cylinder Subwoofer Blue Jeans LC-1 interconnects I only recently added the subwoofer to combat bass issues I was having due to what I guess is room compression. The bass from the 22L floorstanders has always been a bit boomy and unsatisfying in the lower regions. Adding the SVS and keeping the crossover at 40hz …

  10. Started by laxx,

So my parents are looking to upgrade the entertainment room (still using an old 32" tube tv). They've settled on the Samsung 52" A650 model and they asked me to look up what budget receiver to buy. I'm thinking something around $300 (??) would be fine for them. Do you guys have any suggestions? They don't need all the bells and whistles. They just need something simple that works. I'm sure you guys know what I'm talking about, especially when it comes to parents who have a hard time managing 2-3 remote controls (2 cable boxes and tv). And yes, I'm going to be buying them a Harmony remote.

  11. Started by tkam,

Ok let me explain how my speaker rig is currently setup. I have the APL 3910 and the Modwright 9100ES going into the two of the inputs on the Modwright SWL 9.0SE. The modwright pre's outputs are connected to the D-Sonic power amp. Now on to where the problem(s) come into play. I also have my denon 4308ci recievers front channel pre-outs connected to the HT Bypass input on the Modwright pre. The ht bypass input essentially ignores the volume control on the modwright allowing the volume to be controlled by only the reciever. When I have the reciever on (and the ht bypass input on the modwright pre selected) I have a pretty nasty ground loop hum. The hum i…

Ok so I have finally scored the DNA 1 rev A of Audiogon and partnered with my Alon 1s it sounds great. I have been using the pre outs from the Berendsen IPA-80 as well as an Luminous Audio passive volume control partnered with a Moth Audio switchbox. I am starting to set my sites on a preamp and have a few candidates: Bent Audio TAP (a bit out of range atm but still obtainable) Placette Audio passive preamp from what I have read may be tops in the transparency dept in this price range McCormacj Audio RLD preamp, these show up used for $700ish on Agon and Steve McCormack offers upgrades to them. There are three levels of upgrades 700/1100/1400, I'd probably go gusto…

  13. Started by postjack,

As some of you may know, I am fascinated by older audio designs that have stood the test of time. I was reading about a new production Rogers LS3/5a in a recent Hi-Fi News, and this drove me to the internet to do more research. It definitely sounds like a speaker I am interested in hearing. So who here has heard an LS3/5a in any of its versions? Impressions?

  14. Started by laxx,

Has anyone heard these before? I remember someone on Head-fi had a pair, but don't remember who. I'm currently talking to a guy in Maryland about his pair (he's selling a pair of X-Statik's, X-Voce, and a MFW-15 sub) for a pretty good price, but pick up only. I'm trying to work out the details of how large of a car I'll need. I guess I just need a little nudge to commit as long as I can find a way to bring them back to NYC. And I guess I'll find out after tomorrow's watch sale if I even have the money to buy them.

  15. I admit that Wes Phillips' reviews of these two flagship models have got me looking at them, but everything I read seems intriguing and alluring. These are shockingly high cost items, so I am both hesitant to go too far down the rabbit hole of this fixation and yet still very curious. I also admit that the K-XR User Manual's suggestion that a balanced tape out could be used for a headphone amplifier made my heart go pitter-pat. Recognition in the highest of the high end! Anybody else heard the these and/or have any opinions on them or their design? A local dealer reps them, so I hope to get a listen later this week.

  16. Started by Asr,

Listened to these speakers last week at a local dealer. Impressions below written from saved notes. Source Component: Rotel RCD-1072 Amplifiers: Rotel RC-1070 pre-amp & RMB-1075 power amp Impressions: I started off by going straight into the 684, as it's the cheaper model. However, I immediately realized that my listening would be futile without a comparison of some kind, and there were a bunch of other B&W speakers in the room that could be switched between at will, so I ABX'd the 684 against the next-higher-up model, the 683, for all of my listening. Reference CD tracks included: - Alison Krauss & Union Station - New Favorite - "Let Me Touch Yo…

  18. Visited a local dealer today to audition some speakers before heading off to RMAF. Source component: Marantz DV6001 (DVDP) Amplifier: Marantz SR5003 (A/V receiver) The dealer had a sweet setup, a bunch of speakers were all lined up against the wall and there was an electronic switch panel to switch among them at will. Speakers I listened to: - Monitor Audio RS1 (bookshelf) - Monitor Audio RS8 (tower) - PSB Alpha B1 (bookshelf) - PSB Image T55 (tower) - PSB Image T65 (tower) Scattered impressions: First I'll start by saying I vastly preferred the Monitor Audio RS8 among all the others. It took a while for me to develop the preference, there was a wow fa…

  19. As I've mentioned in another post, I'm trying to assemble an inexpensive computer rig for a friend. I know it's unlikely anyone has heard all the components, but anyone got any very positive or exclusionary experience with: NuForce Icon & NuForce S-1 vintage DAC (likely Sonic Frontiers TransDAC/Assemblage DAC1) & Audioengine A2s So USB DAC/amp & speakers versus DAC & active monitors. Leaning towards the latter (already have the DAC which would connect optically to his iMac), but both setups would in the end be ~$500. Unfortunately, buying both and returning the items of one set isn't possible in this case. Any words of advice?

  20. Started by tkam,

I'm thinking of putting together a 2nd speaker rig (it might end up being an office rig). Either way I'd like to pair whatever speakers I get with an integrated tube amp preferably one that also has a decent headphone output. In terms of power needed anything 30W+ would be more than enough. I'd like to keep this under $1k if possible.

  21. Started by kpeezy,

Does anyone know where to buy rubber surrounds for an 8" woofer? It's a Focal 8k415fhdg. I think it is a version of the Focal 8k415 but tweaked for Hales Design Group. The rubber surround has a hole in it. I have the piece that was torn out and I've toyed with the idea of using adhesive to put it back in place but I would like to replace the whole thing if I can. Thanks

Some poking around has led me to believe that DHT preamps should be really (really) good or their proponents are just very vocal about their choice I'm wondering what people here think? 26 tube DHT preamp another 26 DHT

  23. Started by GPH,

What would you guys recommend as a good integrated amp, preferably under 800$, that could handle well Quad 12L2 speakers and that could be use to feed a SRD-7 Mk2/SR-007 at the same time? My source for the moment is an Apogee Duet. Here are the specs of the Quad speakers:

  24. Started by postjack,

So finally accepting the fact that I'm a bass head, I've decided to pair a sub with my 22Ls. While it'd be cool to get the Quad L-sub and have a matching set, reviews of the L-sub say it lacks the lowest bass frequencies. I would be devastated if I paid $1000 for a heavy ass sub and it didn't reproduce low bass effectively, so I've decided to go with SVS and save some money at the same time. Room size is 13 x 10, ceiling height just under 8'. As you can imagine, floor space is at a minimum. My 22Ls are 18" from the side wall and 24" from the back wall. So, while I could possibly squeeze the PB12-NSD in the corner behind the speakers, it would be a tight squeeze,…

Hi, Once a year or so I think about getting back into ESLs and even though the prices on vintage Quads seem to be on the increase I'd be interested in the thoughts of members here who have experience with or are interested in classic ESLs from Quad, ML (CLS, CLS II.), SoundLab, etc. I guess my preference would be for a rebuilt ESL-57 or 63 based on the ones I've heard, but I've always wanted to listen to some of its competitors. Any fans here? k
