I Can't Hear You, Speaker Man, I'm Listening to My Headphones

  1. Started by naamanf,

With having the constant need to tinker I was thinking about bypassing the internal amp of the A5s with some sort of toob amp. I like way the A5s sound but I think the amp is possibly holding them back a bit. Plus at low volumes it puts more power to the left speaker than the right which is really annoying. I was thinking about picking up something like the Miniwatt N3. Any better suggestions?

  2. Started by tkam,

I'd like some recommendations for a pre-amp. Not really concerned if its tube or ss though I would prefer tube. Only real requirement is to keep it under $2k and it must have a remote volume control (remote source selection would be nice as well). So far these two have caught my eye a bit: http://diyhifisupply.com/diyhs_basie.htm and amb's beta22 if I can find someone to build one for me .

  3. Sold my Legacy Signature III's last week and so was without floorstanding speakers for a total of, oh...3 hours before I hopped on audiogon and dealt a perilous blow to my unwitting Visa Now my speaker ownership history looks like this (* indicates previous favorites): Ascend Acoustics 340, 170 Polk LSi 15, 9 *Tyler Acoustics Taylo Reference Monitors *Tannoy Eyris DC3 Tyler Linbrook Signature Monitors *Legacy Signature III Tannoy Dimension TD10 <-- new So yesterday my new Tannoy Dimension TD10's arrived. They are very "interesting" looking - I love 'em I'll try to get some pics up soon. I really should get them in a bigger room than the one they're in, …

OK, so I'm trying to build a stereo system from scratch for the gf. So far, I managed to find a pair of used Maggie MG10s, but I still need a dac and amp for an htpc as source. And probably a sub, but I'll save that for later. I'm trying to shoot for 100W to 250W rms, which is what the manual says I should do. I want to keep the budget tight, as she's no audiophile; when I'm not there, they're most likely not going to play music. I'm shooting for under $700 used for the dac/amp. I've managed to come up with a few budget ideas: - vintage Adcom based system with maybe the 600 dac, 555 amp, and some kinda pre - Outlaw's RR2150 - old NAD integrated plus a dac? I really …

Hey Speaker Kids: Don't I remember reading that the *L2 series of Quad speakers got worse reviews then their previous L series? Reason I ask is there are these demos for sale on Audiogon: http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrmoni&1206234899 I could put this on my desk next to my monitor, and power them off the other speaker outs on my 840A. But if my memory serves me, I'd be better off waiting for a regular 11L (or 12L if I want to go active).

  6. I am thinking between the headroom harbeth and avi ADM9 now but i know for sure that i won't have a chance to audition them. Therefore, everyone here is my only hope can anyone tell me which one is better? thanks

Bringing my pops back from the airport, and tomorrow is trash day. I'm driving down my street when I see some speakers, a large bunch of electronics rather, sitting on the side of the road. My house is like 8 houses down, so I decide to just go home grab the cargo van and drive back by and if they're even decent, I'll pick them up. So, what do I find? I'll let the crappy pics speak for themselves (GF has the camera, so I had to use my phone). They are: Marantz SP 2050 The Smaller Advent Loudspeaker Air Suspension Quadra Linear Horn System All the speakers are in MINT condition. Foam and everything is MINT. Hopefully the dew that was starting to build…

Well, since my living situation will be changing soon, I thought now might be a good time to start contemplating a speaker rig. I'm not sure of the living arrangement yet, but anticipate a typical 2 bedroom apartment for at least a year. My intention would be to use the Opus 21 as source, and the Zana can serve as a preamp. I know very little about speakers/amplification, so given a modest budget of $1000 for speakers/amp, what would you all suggest I look into?

I'm currently using a PrimaLuna Prologue One to drive a pair of Green Mountain Audio Europa's. I've actually been using that setup more than my headphone rig as of late so I figure its time I put some more money into it. I plan to upgrade both the speakers and the amp but I'd like to do the speaker upgrade first. Here's a few links to speakers I'm currently considering: GMA Callisto - http://greenmountainaudio.com/Speakers/Callisto/Welcome.htm Seas Odin MK3 - http://www.madisound.com/odinmk3.html Selah Audio SA-1 - http://www.selahaudio.com/id46.html Thoughts on those or any other suggestions are welcome . Oh any recommendations need to be bookshelf/stand mount sp…

  12. Started by Asr,

I'm planning on building a 2.0 speaker system for music and movies for a home-theater setup within the next 3-4 months, so I recently started researching speakers, receivers, DVD players, and HDTVs (I'm still creaking by with an analog TV so I'll have to get an HDTV before February next year anyway). Have never really listened to speakers much, but I've been reading various audio mags for a while now so I at least have a general idea & direction. However, I could probably use some general speaker-buying tips, as far as dealers, auditions, and decisions go. As in, would it be acceptable form if I took my Plinius CDP around with me and asked dealers to unseat their s…

Some poking around has led me to believe that DHT preamps should be really (really) good or their proponents are just very vocal about their choice I'm wondering what people here think? 26 tube DHT preamp another 26 DHT

  14. Started by Zanth,

Though speakers are not in my immediate future, nor really in my remote future, but I have been listening to some very serious setups as of late and speakers offer some things headphones do not: 1) listening for 2+ 2) realistic bass 2) soundstaging/live feel With a new little one on the way, it would be great to be able to sit with him on the couch late at night while my wife tries to get some zzz's and my other son is sleeping upstairs. I could do this with headphones I suppose, but it would be safer all around to do this with speakers. I have a hankering for coincident victories and tube amp from CJ or VAC, but that is beyond my budget, even used. But if only t…

About six months ago I got swept up in the Insignia decent speaker for cheap craze and purchased a pair really cheap at Worst Buys with the intention of trying my hand at the Danny Richie Mods. My plan was to replace the mediocre speaker pair in my office with some nice looking and killer sounding moded speakers..........rrriiiiiight! http://www.gr-research.com/insignia.shtm Bottom line, they sound awful, worse than stock. I checked every resistor connection, inductor, and how I ran the connections. Out of desperation I sent the crossovers to Danny who hooked them up and ran a sweep. He found no problems, but they sound awful. I have fifteen hours of painful bur…

With my headphone amp also being a decent preamp, I have some interest in active monitors for when speaker listening is an option. I know that there is a fairly strong Quad active fanbase around here. I came across the Tannoy Reveal line: Seems this series has a bunch of options, ranging from passive, to active, to active w/digital inputs, all basically differing in driver size (5, 6, 8"). Anyone heard any version of these?

I know, right? Anyway, it's a home-made speaker system based on an Ikea salad bowl, some Pioneer car speakers and some corresponding digital amps. The salad bowl is inverted, drilled holes through, and acts as the enclosure. parts list videos, including construction of the speakers I think it's pretty obvious that I was initially drawn to this because of the music-making-in-linux aspect, but since the speaker is polydirectional, that ended up interesting me, too. I guess the big question is, is it optimal? I presume they picked car speakers for their ability to project (I.E. go loud), but I'm not as interested in that as I am in fidelity, so immediately, …

So I recently bought some short speaker cable from BJC terminated with banana plugs. I figured I'd have no trouble using the banana plugs the B speaker terminals on my 840A since it was super easy hooking up my 22L's with banana plug terminated speaker wire. Lo and behold, I'm just here trying to setup my SRD-7/mk2, and the fucking plugs won't go into the terminal. A quick flick of the flash light reveals: what the fuck? why the hell would cambridge put little pieces of black plastic in JUST the b terminals so banana plugs can't be used there? I'm no expert on speaker amps, could somebody please tell me what the fucking point of this is so I can stop saying fu…

hi , can anyone recommend me an used excellent speaker for pc(my sound card has xlr balance, rca analog,...)? so far i only know the quad 12l active is good for pc(for the qual 12l2 , i think it won't let me use with pc). can anyone recommend me some speakers which are above level of quad 12l active? my budget for speaker pc will be around 1.5k for a used one thanks

  21. Started by HiWire,

I just realized that I probably won't ever be able to afford a decent multichannel setup, even though I believe that is the primary benefit of the new digital formats... perhaps a lot of "stereophiles" are the same way - they don't actually have a philosophical bias against multichannel recordings, they just can't stomach the cost of buying the new equipment (e.g., 5 more speakers, amps, preamps/controllers, cables, stands, etc.). So I am a stereophile by default.

  22. I'm debating getting some speakers sometime in 2008. I dont listen loud, and will be moving into an apartment, so I will need something that sounds nice played at low volumes. Both the Horn and Strata Mini seem to be well received and around the size I'd be looking for. I would essentially be starting from scratch, with the exception of source, as I've remained solely headphone-based thus far. So I would need to get a suitable amp, and whatever else. I'm thinking of going SET or 300B/similar. Possibly getting another EAR amp, having had success with the EAR HP4. I'm not averse to spending significant money, but I absolutely have to be able to enjoy the setup at low…

I'm looking into a NAD 325BEE, and I'd like to know if it can output enough power to my speakers. My speakers are some vintage AKAI's with 8 ohm impedence and 100Wpeak. I see here: NAD Electronics :: C325BEE Stereo Integrated Amplifier that the NAD 325BEE is rated for 110W power, but only 50W continuously? What does this mean?

  24. Started by grenert,

There seem to be quite a few speaker folk here, so I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm setting up an office system (pretty big office, but I don't listen very loud) and I would like to hear any suggestions you have. In another office I have some older Paradigm Atoms (I think V3) and a powered Paradigm subwoofer. It's nice, but I think it lacks a little treble and spaciousness. I don't want to get another subwoofer, so I'm looking for a set of monitors only. The bass response is less important to me than the treble and dispersion of sound. Something that doesn't require speaker stands would be preferable. The rest of the system is not definite yet, but I think I'll go w…

Will its been a year with the Harbeths. (and Manley amps) Truly one of the most enjoyable years listening to music I have had. I've probably bought more records since getting the Harbeths than any time prior. It took a couple months to really appreciate what they do, which is recreate recordings in a way few other speakers I have heard can. They (my system in general) walks the fine line of speed & resolution and warmth and musical about as good as I have heard. They play really big and transparent. I've listened to them from 3' away up 13' feet and they sound great at either distance. My goal is to someday own the 40.1s driven by BAT VK-150se amps. But if i stay wi…
