hey y'all I was just looking around, trying to figure out how loud (objectively) I listen to my music. I saw spl meters, and was wondering if those worked for headphones, like the HD650. If those do work for that application, which meter should I get? I was looking at the Radio Shack brand one, or this one: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Extech-407730-Decibel-Digital-Sound/dp/B000EWY67W/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_cart_2]Amazon.com: Extech 407730 40 Decibel to 130 Decibel Digital Sound Level Meter: Home Improvement[/ame] Let me know what's what. Thanks

woot.com, a popular one day deal site, has a power conditioner for $134.99 shipped today (11/14) only. A great deal considering the cost of other power conditioners! I'd buy one but I'm a student and have a small budget.

My LP of Roland Kirk's Blacknuss has amazingly good sound quality imo, and there is no surface noise anywhere other than one spot where it skips. Is there any way I can fix this skipping, or is it a lost cause?

Hey! So, I'm looking for a portable player of sorts to placate the babies on the way to China. Requirements are long battery life, or the ability to take AA or another battery pack, and pretty much kid proof. Doesn't have to play DVDs directly, if the ripping process is pretty smooth. I prefer the tablet style. Seems like there aren't many options out there... so, I figured I'd ask around.

Hello I was lucky enough to get skyline's D20 for only 500$ (thanks! great deal). The deal is that so far i've only owned film SLR cameras and, as I understand it, my current lense won't work for this camera. Since I'm pretty much flat broke, I really can't stretch beyond like 300$...so here is the question. What do you camera-junkies consider a decent all-around lense for such a camera? Thanks

  9. I know near nothing about amps to power speakers - i just use my Marantz 2226 and be done with it. But these do appeal to my vintage tooth... http://stereos.about.com/od/amplifierreviews/tp/classic_tubes.htm

Hello I was wondering about different methods of how to listen critically. Are books by Alton Everest or the golden ears training cds of any value? I know the listening live maxim but am looking for alternatives and compliments to that way.

  12. Pretty cool. He says elsewhere they'll probably give it away for free in the end. I'll post a link if that happens. I can think of some places where it might be able to do quite a bit of good! Planning to start doing more hiking and biking. Looking for a multi-activity watch (wrist computer?). A bit of Googling seems to suggest the Garmin Forerunner 935 (cheaper, lighter and anecdotally better GPS performance than the Fenix 5 series). I known some of you here like Suunto as well. Any experiences to share?

Just stumbled across an announcement from a few days back that Sony is pushing a new CD standard called "Blu-spec CD". The articles I've found on this seem a little confused with many suggesting it's a new format, but as far as I can tell they're simply manufacturing Redbook compliant CDs to higher tolerances. Here's some of the more informative links I found. I want to find a cd burner program that will burn full 16 bit audio/ data discs. The programs on my last two computers will only do up to 192kbps. Anyone know of a good basic cd burner program that will make both 16 bit music compilation discs or burn exact copies of 16 bit cd's I already have? Any input is greatly appreciated!

  18. I was in a camera and photography-gear shop recently and noticed that they sold vacuum boxes. Apparently many photographers use the boxes to store their camera bodies and lenses. I bought one to try out. Repeatedly pulling a handle pumps air out of the container. I think it's useful to store electrostatic headphones and other gear sensitive to dust and humidity.
