  2. I have spent too much money on two boutique Parlor guitars and found neither ever got played. Strange size and nuts are interesting to have in the collection, but I would typically go with a Dread or at least an OM if I am getting a boutique guitar. I did see a Nerd Money ATM in Chicago and thought of you.

  4. It is a Ravenswood (DSHA4) power amp for headphones. We did it this way as Adam already has a preamp, so there is not much sense in doubling up on them. Here's another one in a powder coat case.

  8. Sad to see this, Laowei. They are great cars that are very fast/quick right off the lot and can be made faster very easily with a pulley swap and a bit of tuning magic. Slap a pair of stickies on the rear wheels and you can go 10's easily at the quarter mile. Then there's all the support for GM products (only better/cheaper for modding domestically is Ford). But if you can't get it to do what it's supposed to on basics, and considering it was your daily, why make yourself crazy?!? Good move IMO. Too bad...bad ass vehicle indeed. Any thoughts on what might replace the Caddy? HS

  13. in case it wasn't clear, I was kidding. I figure since mine is number 7 that any additional dust isn't going to matter.

  14. Yeah there is a lot of competition in that size range but she wants one of the cheaper, safer and (arguably) most fun cars and who am I to argue. I just got a car entirely for fun, so I have no grounds.

  16. Very nice combo indeed! Love both colors (my Challenger is blue and my Jeep is white). Our neighbor's son traded in his jacked up Ford truck for a proper vehicle....2011 WRX and I got a spin in it this morning. He had just installed a Cobb's (I think that's the aftermarket brand name) tuner kit. The downpipe was out of stock but he had the intake and tune installed. Car makes about 15psi and I have to say I was pretty impressed with the power to weight ratio. Great little car for the money. Has about 55K miles on it and the air was cool here this morning in TX and she pulled pretty hard so I was pleasantly suprised (just back from a trip to Aruba so I needed something to make me smile...). He's had it a month and still isn't quite settled driving the stick, but he did fine. Maybe another neighbor will buy an ST and I can get a feel for it one day. I think the Mazdas are sporty and a great choice for the wifey. Not too big, not too small and they're sharp looking. HS

  21. The two photos are of the amp section of my BHSE. The first photo is showing a cover over that amp which I put on when not in use, that cover is just a quilted pillow case but does an excellent job at stopping dust from getting on the BHSE. The second photo is to show the gap between the top of the tubes, to the bottom of the top shelf which is just under 4". I find that is ample room for ventilation, but when I eventually get a KGSSHV Carbon I'll be putting that BHSE on the top shelf, and the Carbon will go where the BHSE is.

  25. I met with Fang last week, and my wife and I had dinner with him while he was in Colorado for a manufacturer trade show. I discussed the Shanggri-La with him, asking about the rear grills, and he convinced me that the design is intentional and that their measurements don't indicate a back-wave reflection problem or resonance problem, but rather it's all positive. Personally, I would not say anything about them and the design until we can hear it for ourselves. As for Mike, he's a really nice guy who is maybe too excited to try new things and maybe doesn't get out of the honeymoon period, but I do think he writes what he believes in. In my case, I've turned down a lot of review offers, because I don't want or need the attention. Other's like that kinda thing. And while some gear is better than others, back in the old days I tended to only say bad things if it sounds really bad - if it's "okay sounding" but not as good as other gear then I'll share the good and the bad, and then rank it among other similarly priced things I've heard, while making sure to list what's better and what's worse. If I ever said I love it, it's because it really suited my personal preferences. i.e. Darth Beyers, I don't think I had anything good to say unless I used EQ and forgot about it, while Edition 9 sounded good only if they were the first headphone I put on for the day and they were modded. Back then a modded Ed 9 still killed the Darth Beyer with their energy and exciting/powerful sound. But if I would start out first with a well amp'd HD600, SR-007, or HD800 and then switch to an Edition 9, then it was like "Oh crap, these are dark and moody and closed in like a Darth Beyer". Others would not bother to rank them Darth < Ed 9 < HD600 < HD800 like me, but rather would clump the Darth and Ed 9 together at the bottom and not mention any pros for them. On the other hand, my SR-009 sounded wonderful with my KGBH, almost perfect, but were a little fatiguing in the highs and lacked punch with my KGSS. They sounded even thinner and brighter if the volume was pushed too far on the KGSS, while the KGBH gave them weight and punch. If I hadn't bought the KGBH then I would have had a lot more to complain about with the SR-009, because system synergy is important and can make or break one's impressions. Many people here complain about the SR-009 having some issues, but frankly with the right amp and DAC I just didn't agree. We train our brain to make up for our ear's deficiencies, and our ears/brain do adjust to what we listen to the most. And after a long listening session, if one switches the gear up then the sound of the next one they try out can be altered by that brain training. Listen to crap first and the next thing sounds wonderful, and visa versa. Basically, it takes a cleansing of the ear pallet to realize what you're really listening to, as well as proper gear synergy. Something that's bad sounding might not fully rear it's ugly head until It's compared side by side with something that's so superior that the flaws can't be ignored or explained away anymore.

  30. It's entertaining but not a must watch. Also, I didn't like the last two seasons that much. It's hard to say if you should watch it Steve. It definitely doesn't seem like Dusty's kind of show.

  32. No, the normal bias Lambdas with the crummy old SRA-3S amp play music perfectly fine for me, that is all that matters. Sometimes I think about at least a better amp but it is a lot more money, needs custom NB input, etc. I am not sure the improvement would be that much better. Soundstaging, bass extension, jada jada is always interesting to compare but in the end they are just less important to me. I brought all my stuff to the hotel as well so that I could at least keep that sound in my head before the meet-up. It is very difficult because at time I felt that my system was actually similar but with other, more complex symphonic music it is quite different. All in all 30 minutes is still not enough to judge it properly, but I would say the HE1 is a little bit like a turbocharged HD800(S) probably with similar design philosophy but with much bigger, more refined and smoother presentation. It is a sound that maybe a lot of people would be very happy to live with. Again, the HD800Ss were plugged in to a lesser source, but that extra letter hasn't seemed to change my opinion on them. Just not my cup of tea. The old HE90s don't have the imaging bass detail etc. capabilities but they were simply an absolute joy to listen to. On the one hand, it would have been a huge oversight to miss listening to these. But on the other hand, I actually had to put them down to be able to make it home, which was quite sad... But even if I had ludicrous amounts of money that I didn't know what do do with, it would still be quite a risky buy. Maybe it is the sort of girl who is very very seductive at first sight, and on the long term you'll find it is not all roses... All I know is what I've heard was beautiful music. Again, as I wrote I mainly enjoy classical stuff with these, and the new ones are probably more universal. But may I am just old-school and I like it like that. Sometimes I just feel that you can see amazing measurement stuff, look how flat is this and that...and our hearing just does not necessarily react to all of this the 'logical' way, only partially.
