To bad it isn't in class. I could camp out on DOTUs lawn and collect $200k a year from my GI Bill. Would keep us in beer and herb [emoji6]5 points

Heh, sorry, Steve. It is an old habit. I went to a goofy liberal arts college where all classes were discussion based and, in the spirit of being egalitarian, we had to refer to both the other students and the professors as "Mr." or "Ms." so-and-so regardless of any titles they had obtained.3 points

As I recall, we were listening to "Holy Diver" and Al was trying to look up what kind of jazz that qualifies as.3 points

That would be a modern form, known as Spazz Jazz. Closely related to ACDC's Jizz Jazz.2 points

Free community college for all SF residents... http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/02/07/san-francisco-announces-free-community-college-all-residents/97591606/ This is incredible! I applaud you San Francisco!2 points

Cheers, Adam. Steve, thanks for doing that. We should make you the official head-case greeter or something.1 point

Yeah, me too. The hot water in my building has been knocked out the past two days as well. Boy I forgot what a pain in the ass a cold shower is. I'm Adam, by the way. I believe I've personally met most of the CA and NY crew over the years, but haven't met many people outside of those two groups. I'm sure we will cross paths in person eventually, Mr. Tice.1 point

Hope it gets resolved quickly! Do you mind telling me your first name? I feel like we've come far enough in this relationship. Now that's some extremes!1 point

you can tap it off the drains of the SiC's at the driver board using some resistors. 20V offset will whack the bridge out of balance and raise the current flowing. The zeners at the gates provides some protection in that regard, but I suspect that those are slower in comparison to the SiC's and that is the culprit. I suspect the HV900 current limiter isn't robust enough for being literally 'shorted' for a very brief moment when the driver at power up/down swing to B+1 point

I'll be visiting Kevin at the end of March so I'll try them out and see if I them better than the Wiha stuff.1 point

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Pretty low key on the road at WWE HQ but was great to see everyone the weekend before for the little bit of time I was able to fit in.1 point

In the spirit of getting things no one has heard of, just got a Denon DA500 on the cheap. It completes my BB trifecta of PCM63/1702/1704 DACs and also hearkens back to HC circa 2008 This thread is very, very bad1 point

One thing cropped into my head, didn't you once have a Suprex EP-5, Justin? I bought one but it lacks the TRS plug and the multitude of wires has made me go all "mehh" so I didn't reterminate.1 point

Agree with everyone above. I'm probably never going to do a real write-up, so just going to post a lazy personal ranking from top to bottom of the non-Stax headphones I heard, which is not many because I spent most of the time in the AP room. Sony MDR-Z1R - pretty damn good, a bit too much bass at times but very easy to EQ that down a few dB Hifiman HE1000 v2 - surprisingly good, I liked it better than the Shangri La. But then again, I liked everything better than the Shangri La. Not gonna go into the whole build quality thing again Focal Utopia - there's a bit of an upper mid to lower treble peak that makes things sound "forward" (or ear stabby depending on your view), and it's slightly bass light. Stax usually has a small bump in the upper mid/lower treble region but the electrostat treble is smoother than dynamics which makes it less offensive Sonoma Electrostats - there's a lot of weird stuff going on as has been discussed before. Single-stator driver, converting D to A to A to D to D to A again because of DSP EQ, etc etc, but somehow it didn't sound too bad in the end IMO. Nothing to write home about though MrSpeakers Ether something or other - Not too bad but I did the hand dipole test (waving my hands in front of the back grilles) and strangely did not hear any change in sound. The "open" version doesn't seem to be as open as you would think... maybe there's a lot of acoustic damping. Audeze LCD-4 - typical underdamped ortho sound. Bloated bass and everything else kind of hazy, and the large dip in the treble makes it sound a bit sleepy as well. Would be interested to see what happens with some damping Hifiman Shangri La - the first one I heard was so damn bad, I thought it might be broken so I gave it a second chance the second day. I compared both Shangri Las connected to the 300B amp Sunday and one of them was noticeably brighter than the other so the manufacturing process isn't great. Neither of them was as bad as what I heard on the first day, but probably around HD600/650 level. I would recommend saving the $49,7001 point

Hello all, it is my first time here and as I am very interested in building myself this Amp, this is my first post. I am looking into buying the boards, chassis, volume controls and PsU to start the motion. Can someone point me to where to get it ? Thank you just pmed John above. Hopefully to hear good news soon1 point

I finally finished this one today after about... 4 years or so... Let's just say that I hate anything with umbilical cables... Besides the madness of using 4 mains transformers and the super short filament winding's for the CCS tubes this was easy enough. Running at +/-400V off a BHSE power supply with the dropper resistor and zeners to feed the front end. Only main difference is the 12VDC supply used to heat the front end tubes so the board was cut up pretty bad. Next one will use the Megatron V2 pcb's in about 3 years or so...1 point

Not a bad way to finish up a busy week at the office, but I'd much rather be hanging with the gang in NYC.1 point

I assume you are referring lsk389? And matched p-channel means 2sj74 pair would work if I could find some real ones?1 point
