  1. I am going to try something new to get back into dynamic headphones. Rather than jumping headfirst into the shallow end of the pool, I am going to start out a bit more slowly. So my first trial of a “new” headphone (my current newest model headphone is an HD 650) will be a Focal Clear. Looking forward to it.

  6. Here are some distortion figures and harmonic analysis up to 50Khz. Test setup groove tubes el34 matched, electro harmonix gold pin 6922 matched, 1Khz sine from a 192K 24bit rme soundcard spdif out to a v90 dac to the mini t2 inputs, measured on a keithley 2015thd. distortion graph is the average of 20 measurements. All other readings are not averaged: Distortion is less than 0.02% up to 500V rms output with second harmonic being the highest and a little bit of third above the noise floor. At just under 500V the 4th harmonic is above the noise floor, above 500V rms clipping starts and at 600V rms distorion is ~2.5% with the second harmonic at -36db relative to the 1khz signal level. On the right hand top side of each graph under the measurement section is the measurements for the 2nd harmonic in db and mVolts average, min and max over 20 measurements. Noise is the ac voltage not in a harminic bin (i.e. a bin which is an integer multiple of 1Khz). Analysis is with 749 bins going from 20hz to 50khz. A full fft with all bins is included for the 100Vrms output only at the bottom of the post. I wrote the software myself, its very much a rapid prototype kludgy mess but I hope to make it available to community members with keithley 2015 when the code is not so offensive. At the moment there is no guarantee that it will not open up a dimensional hole and make all your original NOS Japanese transistors disappear. FFT analysis 1Khz 100Vrms output. 20hz to 50khz

  7. Baker looks like the crazy guy he was. He and Bruce hated each other, to the extent that Baker attacked him with a knife at one point. When, post Cream, Baker went to set up a recording studio and live in Lagos (in Nigeria), Bruce said that the best place for Baker was on another continent to him, but Africa was not far enough. But they were often off their heads on dope. Clapton disappeared for several years into his house and got lost on a cocktail of Class A drugs. Then he got off drugs and turned to alcohol. To the extent he couldn't play and sing, and often just staggered off stage after one mumbled number. It is a wonder he is still alive. Unlike the bass player they brought in for Blind Faith, Ric Grech. After playing bass with a wide selection of bands, he retired at 31 and died at 43 from kidney failure as a result of alcohol abuse. Was lucky enough to see Clapton and Winwood with my son maybe five years ago in Birmingham. They did pretty much everything on Blind Faith's single album, and then some Cream stuff. Factoid - Crosby, Stills and Nash approached Winwood to join the band. But because of other band commitments he turned them down. So instead they approached Neil Young....

  10. it rained, and the rest of my parts arrived, so I rebuilt my bike. Ultegra R8000 full group, 52/36 crank, 11/30 cassette, fulcrum 6 wheels (apparently I need a spacer, so my "magical r8000 shifting" isn't quite magical yet), ec70 stem and bars

  11. I've got a Cream booklet that I got at their concert with lots of cool pictures in it but that one is not among the promotional photos in it! Kinda looks like an advert for personal drug choices?

  12. Did my first gym session since lockdown today. I have lost a shit load of condition in the five months they were closed. Lot of hard work to do for sure in the coming weeks. Of course you have to book in advance using their app, every other machine is off line to keep distances, and you wipe the machine down before and after with a spray bottle and a handful of paper off a roll. And there is a one-way system. But the good news is because the number is limited to 15 at any one time, you no longer have to queue for a machine!

  18. Tyler, First off, I am a firm believer in "drink what you like". Rather than recommend wines and wineries you should try because "experts say so" I would just explore everything and everywhere, find what you like, then buy shit tons of it to store and share. Do you like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or white varietals? If you don't have a strong preference then just hit up the popular wineries, try their selection of wines then go from there seeking out the same varietals. You could start with Milestii Miici, then Et Cetera and Castel Mimi. Sometimes the restaurant staff can be a great source of leads to small family wineries producing under the radar gems. I hope this helps.

  21. Honestly I just use the HD650 something like 95% of the time. It's like mom's chicken noodle soup, or a pair of old fuzzy slippers, headphone comfort food that won't knock your socks off but is just pleasant and relaxing and nice, without doing much of anything wrong. These days, with so much crap going on in my life and outside of it, that's pretty much all I'm looking for most of the time. And the FR is damn near perfect. Other headphones are the Stax L700, which has some faults but is just so damn musical, the Utopia, which sounds great but is a bit fatiguing so I might ditch it, and the SR-007. The latter won't fit my head properly, I more or less have to hold the earcups in place so it gets next to no use, but damn it sounds great when everything works out. If only Stax updated the ergonomics... On the move I use the Westone UM Pro 50, for similar reasons to the HD650, though I do EQ it a bit. But then again I EQ everything. Might get some RAALs at some point, but have concerns over brightness/fatigue.

  22. When I joined Head-Fi back around 2005, I had my trusty AKG K340, which I bought new in '83. Since then I've tried numerous models. Liked many, disliked many. But once I tried the AKG K1000 I knew I'd found my headphones. They're still my go to headphones, and I seriously doubt that'll change in the foreseeable future. Are there technically better headphones? Sure. But there are no other headphones with the presentation of the K1000. It's that quasi speaker like presentation that still pulls me in. I do miss the Pioneer M22 driving them, but my Exposure 2010S does a fine job of pushing these power hungry drivers. When I need a little more privacy it's generally the Senn. 580, but the Senn. 650 for more punchy material.

  23. These days I spend more time listening to earphones more than my full size headphones. With less time for listening at home, I spend more time listening at work. I can use a full size cans at work but I prefer a more discrete device 1. Sony IER-Z1R. Seriously good sound for an IEM with really good isolation. Wearing comfort is a top notch to me. So a preferred choice while listen at work. 2. Sony MDR-EX1000. This is a really lovely sounding earphones. Isolation is rather poor so I use it a little less than the IER-Z1R but the sound quality is top notch. In many ways I do prefer them over the IER sound wise. I like both the EX1000 and the Z1R more than my JH13Pro....so the the old 13Pro FP isn’t used much anymore. 3. Senn HD800 reterminated with a Furutech 4.4 mm. Most top end DAPs are now very capable of driving the HD800 very well now.....so I listen to them more than ever around the house. Whenever possible, I fire up my ECP Ravenswood/DSHA-4 or L3 to really hear what they can really do. 4. Stax SR-009 is now forth on the list. I use it mostly with the Headamp Aristaeus for simplicity. I also listen to Wachara’s HE90 Clone as well.
