Digging up a somewhat old post, but polar bears actually do this to distribute their weight across a larger area in order to avoid breaking through ice.

Sorry if you already knew :P

I did not. I just thought it was a funny picture. If pressed, I would have to say that in the back of my mind, I was probably thinking that his chin/neck/upper chest itched, like when a dog or cat drag their butt on the floor.
