April 27, 201214 yr Author Interesting, and fairly informative by DRTV standards. I have a few Pentax lenses, but they're all M42. To someone with a collection of K-mount lenses, this thing is probably worth investigating.
April 27, 201214 yr B&H has been out of the Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4G for a while but just got some in if anyone is interested. I am trying to keep myself from buying one since I spent $1200 on a toilet today. Edited April 27, 201214 yr by shellylh

April 27, 201214 yr For that price, I hope that it cleans you up and combs your hair. It should make your bed too!
April 27, 201214 yr Wise ones: I am looking for a zoom lens. I currently use the 18-55 (non VR) that came with my D50 and it is a fine lens. I am not much of a photographer, but I know that I prefer fast to slow. My question is, can I get a lens similar to the 18-55 that is faster WITHOUT breaking the bank. In other words, what's a good, fast relatively inexpensive Nikon zoom lens? Is such a thing possible at $500?
April 27, 201214 yr Not that I know of (if you want new, autofocus, Nikon brand, etc). If you want fast and cheap, I think you have to go with prime lenses. Please correct me if I am wrong. Actually, I guess there might be some stuff by Tamron, etc that might fit the bill. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/550954-REG/Tamron_AF016NII_700_17_50mm_f_2_8_XR_Di_II.html Edited April 27, 201214 yr by shellylh
April 27, 201214 yr Basically what Shelly said, though same holds true for all other brands, and fastest available zooms are at 2.8. Oh and Shelly, have you bought 50 1.4g yet? I'd have thought about if I did t already have. 50 1.8g.

I'd have thought about if I did t already have. 50 1.8g. Haven't but I am really tempted. The only thing that is keeping me from getting it is that I already have a 35mm f/1.8 which is probably a better everyday focal length on a DX camera. Edited April 27, 201214 yr by shellylh
April 27, 201214 yr In other words, what's a good, fast, relatively inexpensive Nikon zoom lens? you may pick two. Maybe try to find a first gen 18-200vr on the used market. I love mine although it's not very fast (f stop wise).
April 27, 201214 yr Dinny, have you tried shooting with primes? I love 30-35mm on a crop body, and almost never use my 18-55 VR these days. I have the Sigma 30 f/1.4 mounted right now.
April 29, 201214 yr Thanks guys. I love my 35mm fixed, but with a kid, the zoom can be helpful. I like Nate's idea of a second hand 18-200.
