  3. A very good friend of mine, Jameson, is riding in Death Ride Tour in honor of a friend who is suffering from ALS. Below is a message I received from Jameson. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hello to all. This year, we are doing two fundraiser bike rides. Death Ride - a fundraiser for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and Tour de Cure - the same diabetes fundraiser that we always do. Why Death Ride? One of my best friends has ALS. He was one of the toughest guys I knew. Five years ago, we were doing mountain centuries, and didn't think much of it. Out of nowhere, he started complaining about cramping after long…

  5. After the batteries in the laundry, I decided to check all the battery powered devices for corrosion/leaks last night. I have a tactical flashlight with CR123a lithium batteries in it. When I opened it up, there was black powder around the batteries. I put the batteries back in the flashlight, I tried googling this and the only thing I could find was black residue after a lithium battery explosion which seems quite toxic. I'm hoping that this is just carbon or something. The batteries work, although to guess this could be from the last pair when they went bad (they didn't explode either). Does anyone know what this might be? Should it throw away the batteries and/or f…

I guess there was a moment for all of us that got us interested in audio, electronics, science and so forth. To kick things off, this was got me going. In the UK during the 60's and 70's there was a series of educational books for children called the Ladybird books. It eventually ran to hundreds of topics, but were written in very clear language and with superb illustrations. It shows what an effect this had on me - I remember precisely the book - Magnets, Bulbs and Batteries. And thanks to the web, here it is www.vintage-radio.info/download.php?id=358 vintage 1962. I remember pretty much everything I built from that - and from the publication date I must have…

It is with great pleasure I bring you one of my most ambitious projects, Photography in Medicine. The idea was born of some random discussions my advisor and I had over the summer and after incessantly annoying, emailing and calling a lot of people, it has finally come to fruition. You can read more about it at www.photographyinmedicine.org. Chris Evert Children’s Hospital has graciously allowed full access to their general pediatric, pediatric oncology and pediatric ICU wards where we will give the admitted children cameras and go around with them taking pictures of whatever they find interesting. The hospital plans on displaying the images in their main lobby in Mar…
