For the first time in about 8 years I played football (or soccer to most of you) with some collegues at work. It didn't go very well, after about 15 minutes I got a complete achilles tendon rupture in the right foot. I wasn't even playing very hard, just kicked the ball away from the goal. And I was sooo looking forward to play football again. Untill the operation on Wednesday I shall do as little as possible, just keep my foot high. It will take some 8 - 10 weeks with easy going and crutches to get well. The good thing is that it will be completly healed, but I'm afraid I will be bored long before that happens. Luckily I got a lot of unread books. And my sister w…

Okay, this thread is only half serious as the topic is stupid, but I'm also curious what others think. jp11801 and I were talking last night about my recent gear purging, and I told him I was going Team Minimal. In my opinion, having one main dynamic headphone, one main electostatic headphone, and one main portable headphone with accompanying rigs qualifies me. He claims that's too many, and my choices in each category eliminate me entirely. He also suggested we open up our disagreement to the peanut gallery (I guess that's you), so here it is.

I thought the "explanation" to calm the masses was to support Can Jam, which is over, but the annoying left-sided banners/ads still make me move my cursor to right with every page change. http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f11/can-jam-over-can-ads-move-r-again-323913/

I need a little Head Case advice and attitude. I received a pm yesterday from the other site regarding the EC/SS I put up for sale a month ago. The buyer is new and has three posts and no feedback to his credit. The prospective buyer has offered to pick up postage and PayPal costs and wants me to ship the EC/SS to Israel. I live in Southern California and the thought of shipping something outside of North America has me a little concerned about the amp ever arriving even if insured or the buyer claiming the amp never arrived. I see substantial risk of the buyer claiming he never received the package and requesting a refund. Over the years and after reading so many hor…

I have a Canon EOS 40D and a 28-135 f3.5-5.6 IS lens. I have been asking around randomly and was looking at lenses today with the hope of finding the perfect lens for gear pics and use at meets. The question of whether it is better to get a macro or just a wide angle lens is not completely clear to me. Several people have 50mm f2.8 macro lenses and like those, and you can even go to f1.4 with a new Sigma lens, but I think I still want it to be a zoom for greater flexibility. Talk me out of it, of course, if you think that is the best choice. The lens that looks killer to me is the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, although it is very pricey and may be overkill for me. Th…

I have a bad reading habit. Most times I tend to pick up a book, start reading, I'll finish it without too much of a "time off." However there are a few that I have started and have taken a break from. Interestingly, I do seem to remember and ponder what's going on with the characters exactly at the place/time where I left them while I am off. There are some extreme examples.... The Stand: I left the troop of wanderers (not quite wanderers after all) stuck at mother Abigail's for about 1 month. So I wondered what where they up to, playing in the corn fields. Brother Odd: Left odd looking/following a bodach/beast (won't tell more so that I don't spoil) in the basemen…

Does anyone with some codding skill want to try and write something to remove that annoying sidebar they put on the left hand side, using greasemonkey? http://www.greasespot.net/ I saw this but don't know where to put the code I want to get rid of http://diveintogreasemonkey.org/patterns/remove-element.html

So. 5am. And the people in the flat next door are playing music loud enough for me to host a disco of my own. I live a street of old houses, by my guess the wall is 1ft thick at the thin section, 2ft over the rest. Sandstone most likely. Anyway. 5am is beyond reasonable acceptable party noise hours. Whats the best way to kill these fuckers and get away with it? I've got sleep to be getting so I can be well rested for a day of procrastination tomo.

Not a political endorsement or argument by me in any manner, just pointing out something interesting. I've just read through an great essay by my favorite author, David Foster Wallace. He's a post-modern type who's written lots of short stories, non-fiction, and one totally over the top novel called Infinite Jest. His main skill is bogging his literature down with meaningless details only to hit you with simple but seemingly revalatory facts (probably only revalatory based on the general mediocrity of what came before.) Despite that, I still love reading anything he writes. Guess I like the pain . So in 2000, Rolling Stone contacted him to join a media tour for a ca…

Whats the longest time that you chaps have run for without any shut eye? I'm up to 45 hours now, which is I think, the longest I've gone. I'm now just doing it out of some sort of strange morbid masochist curiousity, my companions are two seasons of charmed I've not yet watched and a 12 pack of Tennants lager, 7 to go. I've no class tomo. No deadlines coming (original stay up was for last recent one). Should I collapse into bed, its there. Like, 2 feet away. All snug and warm. OR Should I just keep going. In the name of science. Or whatever passes for science these days? I'm aware (from reading and such) of what symptoms I might expect (increasing chance…

Hey all, I am flying this afternoon and am planning on bringing my portable headphone amp in my carry on bag. I won't have any full size cans, just my IEMs with me (which might make explaining what it is even harder). Has anyone had problems getting through security with one? It does look rather odd if you don't know what it is, especially when tethered to my ipod and there is a LOD between them.

So the other day, on Thomas Jefferson's birthday, some policy nerds went down to the jefferson memorial with their ipods to dance and celebrate Jefferson's birthday. Quietly. What follows is an interesting bit of irony: http://freethejefferson1.com

So last week my vintage Mc2100 amp was shipped back from a recap, and when I hook it up the left channel doesn't play anything but some low-level hum noise. Subbing the Eico or Heathkit amps into the EXACT SAME setup works perfectly, so it must be the 2100, right? Wrong! Not 1 hour after dropping off the amp at the highly recommended local McAmp guy (that I found out about after the recap), I come to the striking realization: wait, didn't I have a bizarre channel-out problem with some interconnects and the AT-HA2002 a few years back? The center pin on the old-style HGA silver lace RCA Lok connectors was a bit too skinny, and for some reason wouldn't make internal conta…
