Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Ok, I hate making decisions, and I hate having broken headphones. There is a bit of a rattle in the right side of my maple Darth Beyers. I'm thinking it is either a driver, a hair, or (doubtful, but maybe) a slight defect in the wooden cup assembly. I have a few options, as the seller has reimbursed me a very reasonable amount to go towards rectifying my problem. Option 1: Buy 1 dt770-250 ohm driver to replace the one, fix it myself (with help) or send it to a DIY guy to do it for me Option 2: Same as above, but send it to larry. Option 3: Send to Larry to redriver both sides with 80 ohm drivers (many people consider these superior). This will be a little $$$ out …

I was lucky enough to get some new K240's for Christmas this year. I have owned a pair of Hifiman HE 4xx's for a couple of years now and recently bought a set of Sennheiser HD569 closed back headphones for when the wife is watching movies a little too loud. I also have a pair of Samson SR850's which seem to be modeled after the K240's so I really wanted to try the real thing. I will have to admit that I wasn't real impressed by the 240's at first. The first amplifier that I hooked them to was my old Realistic SA-150 integrated amp. They really highlighted the deficiencies of that amp with the highs rolled off and a muffled sound like cheap bass heavy headphones. …

Fed up with the pod, I dissected them last night. I just used the ibud cable to make things simple. Sorry for the crappy pics, I'm too lazy to get my rebel.

  4. I got my cans and my amp back yesterday. The ps-1's are recabled with a custom beryillium copper alloy cable, and the rs-1's are recabled with a moon audio black dragon. The amps 1/4" neutrik was replaced with a 4-pin xlr and some of the wiring was redone. My initial impressions are that the sound is more open and 3d. The bass has become bloated, and the overall sound is less refined. I prefer the ps-1's over the rs-1's currently because of their added refinement and better sound stage, but the rs-1 midrange does have its moments. Biggie.

Jesus these things are killing me with their vice-like grip on my head, and my head is not even that big! After an hour of listening my jaw starts to hurt. Is there any way to make them grip less?

OK - putting the neck on the chopping block here! I have the SRD-7 with the Spritzer Professional bias board, so, in effect, an SRD-7 Pro. Love the sound with the Sigma/404 and driven by a Studer A68. The bottom end is nicely in control (as Birgir has said happens with upscale amplification ala Blue Hawaii SE or that ilk), and there is more of the power that these earspeakers have in spades. They seem to convey the "oomph" of the performance much better than any other Stax I've heard. Although the Lambda Nova Signature/SRM-Monitor is probably more technically neutral, this combination seems to get a natural sound out of most recordings, just as Naotake Hayashi mentioned.…

Hello everyone! I am a product designer from the uk and I'm designing a pair of headphones for my final project (at Uni). I'm aiming them at the female youth-late twenties market but I want them to sound good too. So far I've been trying to research design on headphones but am not finding an awful lot. Does anyone know about the insides much? lol is it a case of just the speaker being inside the headphone cup? I'm looking at 40mm Neodymium speakers but I can't find any other higher end alternatives. They seem decent but at only $USD0.20 I'd like to put something better in. The other aspect I'm looking at is sales. Could anyone point me in the right direction here? For…

  14. Hi, I'm new to this forum and would like some advice on getting a pair of budget headphones for a recording studio. I would like to use them for recording vocals mainly and it's important that the headphones are able to prevent a lot of sound leaking into the microphone. Ideally I would like the headphones to have a replaceable lead and be comfortable and pretty decent sounding. My budget is £50 max. I have done a reasonable amount of searching online over the past few days and have narrowed my choices down to Monoprice 8323 - £15 Superlux HD669 - £24 Superlux HD661 - £24 Superlux HD631 DJ - £36 Which of these prevents sound leakage most effectively…

I'm not in a position to buy these phones at the moment (medical bills are fun!), but the reviews that I've read suggest that they are the phones I've been looking for, and I should be financially whole, and hopefully healthy, in early 2019. Has anybody had a chance to listen to them yet? I'd drive them with my KG-perfected SP Extreme.

Hello I bought pair of SR-3 year ago. I knew they had failure, left driver was quiet, right driver was only little louder. After year I've decided to give them new life this spring. At the first I've discovered holes in diaphragm of the left driver as you can see in the picture. I decided to use 2um mylar to make new diaphragm for both drivers and self made coating with some antistatic spray+isopropanol. Now I am sitting with them and writing this post, they sound great, with good bass, with sweet and not sharp highs.

The latest episode of "How it's made" features headphones. They show how the K702 is made, but it'd be pretty much the same for most headphones. I uploaded just that part of the episode. It's available at http://buttsarenottoys.com/headphones.wmv

I have always found my ER6i to be lean in the bass, but enjoyable none the less... As of lately they have become bass mongrels. I'm tlaking crazy bass, especially for an Ety. Is this a sign that its time to change the filters?

It's long overdue, but I finally decided to go and figure out exactly how the filter PCB in the K1000 affects the sound. As has already been established, it is a low Q notch filter in the treble region, with a noticeable effect on the sound. It consists of an inductor, a resistor and a capacitor in parallel with each other, and the filter is in series with the driver. The values I measured were 7.1mH, 88.9R and 0.168uF. The resistor markings clearly show it as an 88.7R 1% resistor, but the other two would require assumptions towards their nominal value. Simulating the filter based on a 120 ohm impedance gave results that conflicted with the measurements I took of the K…

There is an excellent feature on headphones for use as studio monitors in this month's issue of Sound On Sound. Check it out if you can - it is interesting to hear about the opinions of various engineers using the same headphones that we purchase for the pleasure of listening.

First off, hello everyone, Recently I was doing a Re-cable on my AKG K-701's and I regrettably made a vital mistake and twisted the signal post on one of my drivers, snapping the small copper wire. Dejected with my horrible mistake I went of on a search for a proper AKG support line, much to my surprise every number I called resulted in no ringing for an extremely long period of time on any of the lines I attempted to contact them from (818 numbers). So naturally, the first thing I did was assume I should just email them, so I came across a gentlemen named Frank Rodriguez (frank dot rodriguez at harman dot com) whom was the "Customer Service Administrator". So I did, a…
