Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Hi guys, during the last five years, so many new TOTL headphones appeared in the market that I got totally lost how they compare. Because every brand claims that its own TOTL headphone is the best of the world. But also reviewers and people from the forums claim very different views. This is of course quite normal and maybe opening this thread might be very silly as things might have been said thousands of times already here. However, as a newbie on this forum I did not find real impressions especially on the HifiMan SUSVARA, especially when compared to STAX. And in addition to the headphones themselves, there is this multiple-headphone amplifier discu…

  2. Replacing ear pads is alcohol the best solution to remove old glue ? H ave the new ones already. Anyone reading this perhaps someone might know where I can get a Drive Belt for Stax Quatro CD Player, circa 1984 ? A company who carries a generic replacement? All help and guidance will be greatly appreciated!!Happy New Year to all, and keep safe out there this isn't political just deadly !!! Peace/Out....And I'll raise a glass to an international mandate with penalties in order to have face masks worn by all until this is under control. Give me liberty or give me death, not over a freakin face mask that's for sure. Your not restricting my personal freedom, your attempting t…

Hello all! I am an engineer and a big fan of perfect audio, especially on my headphones. Some time ago, I bought the AKG k612 headphones and I love them. Perfect and clean audio, very open scene and the design! Worth every $ I spent on it. However, the one problem I found is that I am concerned about the headbands distortion, when not using it and hanging on headphone hanger. That's why (as an engineer) I started thinking of the solution, how to store my k612 and be calm about headbands. I've made my headphone stand (so I don't need to hang k612) and I want to share it with the world. However I would like to meet the premium look of the k612, it is quite challenging thoug…

I was lucky enough to get some new K240's for Christmas this year. I have owned a pair of Hifiman HE 4xx's for a couple of years now and recently bought a set of Sennheiser HD569 closed back headphones for when the wife is watching movies a little too loud. I also have a pair of Samson SR850's which seem to be modeled after the K240's so I really wanted to try the real thing. I will have to admit that I wasn't real impressed by the 240's at first. The first amplifier that I hooked them to was my old Realistic SA-150 integrated amp. They really highlighted the deficiencies of that amp with the highs rolled off and a muffled sound like cheap bass heavy headphones. …

Focal just announced new closed-back headphones made in partnership with Bentley (?). They use the Aluminum/Magnesium dome and retail is $1299.

Not quite sure where this belongs, so mods feel free to move this thread. So, me being me, I'm usually a little late to the party. I was in Best Buy today and came across the Boze frames, Bluetooth sunglasses. I listened to them and can really see a use for these when I'm away from home. The sound was certainly adequate for non critical listening, with the advantage of being able to hear voices, sirens etc... Does anyone own these? Would it be easy to adapt to Alexa? Are their better brands for the money? Style is somewhat important and I do like the rondo style, and the availability of accessory colored lenses, or even prescription lenses. Thoughts, impressions…

  10. Jerry Harvey Audio is releasing a universal fit version of their JIMI custom IEM, limited to 200pcs, and offering it exclusively to dealers (HeadAmp is one). We have some on the way, and some black shelled demo pairs as well. The shells are are also smaller than JH's previous generation of universal fit earphones. https://www.headamp.com/products/jh-jimi-aion From Jerry Harvey Audio:

  11. I do quite a decent amount of walking and it's mainly in neighborhoods. Sometimes though there are people mowing, using edge trimmers, blowing by in really loud cars, motorcycles, etc. and I can hear it and it bothers me with my current headphones (Monoprice 8323 stock). I know those don't block enough to prevent hearing damage. I do not like IEM's. I've been looking up and it seems like passive noise isolating headphones are better for medium pitch to high pitch noises and active noise cancellation is best for low to lower middle pitched noise. So I was wondering what is the best headphone that has a combination of the two for under $100? Even if the SQ is lowe…

  13. As a group of veteran audiophiles who have repeatedly espoused the sentiment that "end-game is the point of the game", I'm curious what that actually looks like. What air vibrators consistently end up strapped to your noggin? Or have you all abandoned headphones in favor of speakers and whiskey?

I know we do not discuss headphones much anymore but I have question for the Grado experts. I have to replace the pads on a couple of my Grados (actually one is an Alessandro) due to the infamous pad disintegration issue. There is some residue on the wooden cups that I would like to clean off. It is pretty clean just using a soft cloth and soft brush but there is some residue that I would like to remove without harming the finish. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I hate to post about headphones on a booze and light banter site, but these might actually be interesting (T+A is a very German, engineering-driven audio concern) and are reassuringly expensive at $6400. The DAC/amp is apparently $8900. https://www.ta-hifi.de/en/musicreengineered-solitaire/

Noticed that there hasn't been anything posted on the Audeze LCD-3 for some time now. The Fazor update was around 2014 or so, and there was a fair amount of press at the time that it improved the performance of the headphones. I picked up a set of LCD-3's last fall, and to me, they sounded pretty darn good overall. I found it a step up from a pair of Focal Elars that I was using. At this time, was using a Mjolnir Audio Dynalo amp to drive the Audeze LCD-3's. While I was happy with the sound overall, noticed that some recordings didn't have quite the clarity I was hoping for. So, when a deal to pick up a Mjolnir Audio Pure Bipolar for a really good pric…

I posted a Chinese version of this article several months ago and now I translated it and put it here. I guess some people here will be interested. I hope you like it. Actually I have some more articles like this pending but I just don't have the time to write it up. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It all started about a year ago that a second hand sr-omega popped up in the local community. From time to time omegas show up on markets around the world but this one is different: an omega with 007 drivers installed. When the drivers are replaced, such omega drops its …

Has anyone heard both the Aeon and Ether flow (closed back)? I have a pair of Aeon closed backs that I enjoy when I need to have closed headphones. I am thinking of trying the Ether flow since hoping it might be a bit more open sounding and neutral.

Bose will be closing all of its retail stores in North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia in a few months: https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/15/21067715/bose-shutting-down-retail-stores-layoffs-north-america-europe-japan-australia They were the closest thing to a mass-market high-end stereo manufacturer for most people. It's almost more interesting to see which regions were exempted from the shutdown – still some strength in those markets.

https://www.electric-kingdom.net/post/behringer-releases-clone-of-beyerdynamic-dt-770-studio-reference-headphones See, this is why I hate Behringer, they reverse engineer technology, and then undercut the original. I’m alright with it when the technology is long since out of the market, as is the case with many of their synthesizers, but this is ubiquitous! Grr...

I am surprised there has not been much of a talk of the Focal Clear headphone here yet. I bought a pair from Justin a few months ago during a promotional sales. It’s an impromptu buy mostly prompted by Tyll’s review and the fact I had just built a SS Dynahi. Don’t ask me why! To cut to the chase (my personal opinion of course), this is my favorite dynamic headphone I have heard to date. I agree with just about everything Tyll said about it. It just sounds “right”. Probably best overall in terms of reproducing the tonal and timber of instruments. It reproduces a well recorded piano as convincingly as I have heard from headphones. I own a pair of Elear and …

So in trying something new, HeadAmp is now offering the Spirit Torino headphones from Italy. These are my 3 favorite models...I'll have to do a lot more listening to see which is definitely the favorite, but all of these shine in their own way. The Radiante is a closed back and may be the most interesting of the bunch. Anyone going to be at the DC meet next weekend? I might also look at doing a loaner program for these. Very few people have heard them yet
