  2. I am looking for a compact amp with a line out for my desk at work, so I can keep my crappy powered speakers plugged in too. Source is an iPhone 3g dock, headphones are most likely k271's, if not them, either DT770's or DT250's (I need to hear the k271 first). So, assuming I go with the k271, I am guessing I'll want to err on the warm side of neutral, and I'd really prefer something with a small case and wall wart as "desk" and "office" are really words too strong to use for what they give us. My understanding of the mini3 is that it isn't easily modified for a lineout (but I would be happy to be wrong - I love the mini3). Battery functionality isn't important, but …

After talking with somebody fairly extensively about the topology and circuitry of the amp, seems it's like a PPAv2 (or any other PPL amp), but slightly tweaked. What's the consensus around here for one? Is it worth the asking price over a PPAv2? What are the sonic differences between the two? I've heard a Lisa, but not the PPAv2...just wondering if it's worth supporting the DIY community or supporting somebody who doesn't really hold back his designs to the DIY community. http://www.esnips.com/doc/837045c1-25a0-4004-b933-7b9f9c842bc0/LISA-III-New-Front-Panel-019 I like how slender the new Lisa is, as it's not TOO bothersome to carry around. Carrying around that …

I am not sure which forum to put this question, whether the headphone or amp section. Which electrostatic headphone works best with the SRM-T1S? I now have the KGSS and the SR-007 for it is coming. I also have the T1S and want to optimize it's musical presentation at a second location. I really don't what the time or money to play around with all the combination of these headphones. I am inclined toward the SR-404, any comments. This is after reviewing lots of threads and personal rankings. I prefer the sound of the SR-Gamma Pro to the SRX-001 Mk3 normal bias. thanks

Hi ! I get this unit, but I'm confusing with offset voltage - I measured the output offset voltage and it is far from 0V - I do not know if these stax amplifiers have that, but mine has, respectively: 8.8V, 5.4V, 12V and -0.6V? Electrostats are rather new to me, but here the DC voltage at the output should be close to 0V, as in conventional amplifiers? Is it not damaged? Does anyone have a list of the correct voltages in this model?

Courtesy of tkam, I managed to get my hands on the special PPX3 that the Toddler himself dreamed up. The amp is now mine. I loved this amp the last time we were down in Cinci. I thought about getting one for weeks back then but I already had a high voltage MPX3 and eventually sort of forgot about the amp. I dont know what prompted me to ask Mikhail about the amp. When I did, I found out that this amp is more like a mini-Maestro than a PPX3 SLAM. The power supply is fully regulated unlike the PPX3, the power supply used a number of Maestro techniques and the Maestro plitron .... and added the high voltage operation with 6BL7GTA's. In short, this amp kick…

I'm always intrigued by a full line of products from one manufacturer that can pretty much handle all your audio needs. As much praise as I've read about the Opus 21, I'm surprised to have never even heard of the S30 Integrated Amplifier and the XS "Extra Sources"..., um, box thing, which has an MC and MM phono stage, additional inputs including USB, an FM/AM tuner (!!!!!!), and a headphone amplifier. Can't find much about these two components around the world wide internet. Anybody ever seen them, heard them, or read a review of them?

Since changing up my work rig, the Lunchbox is kind of in limbo with me right now... I'm not sure if it's staying or going. But I was reading Skylab's Lunchbox II impressions "over there," and was interested if anyone here had tried rolling tubes with it. It seems as though the Western Electric 396A and/or Sylvania 2C51are direct swaps for the 6N3P and the Electro-Motive 6FC7 is a direct swap for the 6N24P, and I've read nothing but positive reviews of the results in the LB & the EC-01. I ordered some from the TubeDepot, as I figured $30 wasn't a big chance to take, but I'm curious what to expect. IMO, the LB offers a pretty impressive bang for the buck, and i…

  12. When my Mjolnir SRM-006t is connected to my AGD D27, the left channel is much quieter than the right, and there's a beeping/static noise in that ear which responds to volume control. This happens to both my 950X and SR-007. The D27 is connected to my PC via USB, and does not exhibit this behavior when my computer speakers are connected via RCA. I've tried swapping the balanced XLR from left to right on the e-stat amp and and had the same issue, i.e. the issue didn't follow the balanced connection. I've also measured the voltage when the amp is on in the places indicated with identical results on both channels. Even with the D27 volume control bypassed the issue remains. …

  14. Well, I just joined up here today I'm also kpeezy on head-fi and I have a little question. I'm looking to combine my turntable setup and my PC setup. The plan is to get a phono pre-amp and a desktop amp (and something to switch between sources depending on the desktop amp). I'm really not sure about which specific components would work best with my headphones though. I'll update my sig soon enough but I have HD580s, SR225s, and K240 Sextetts. I listen to mostly indie rock (Wilco, Pavement, Spoon, etc.). I really just now got around to giving this merger serious thought and found out about this forum at the same time so I thought it would be a nice ice-breaker Than…

I've posted my complaints in the other head-forum but no adequate responses or even any guidelines have been written. For the last month I hear a conciderable increase of the highs of my O2mk2. Somehow the highs "opened" and become more shrill and noticeable, some squeaky and ticking sounds protrude above the whole sound "picture". I mean sounds like the sound of a harpsichord or the movement of the fingers over the quitar's neck, or some "parasite" sounds which are found in all acoustic records. It sounds to me like sharp peaks in the upper frequencies range. Before this transformation the sound of the O2mk2 was smooth and laid back without anytning annoying and distrac…

Hi, I have one amp with those and there may be room for improvement: it uses some Elma electrolytic of 4700mF (and 16V rating if memory serves) on each channel life wire. They seem to block around 25V of DC (rough measure before the cap) so it does not seem a good idea to just bypass them (just joking ). I am looking for some advice, there is quite room for alternatives and even 'groups' of caps if someone gives me a good reason to get rid of those electrolytics... Thanks!

Do I need to do anything to run balanced headphones out of the XLR outputs on the Lavry? Can I simply get someone to recable the headphones terminated in female XLRs or do I need to do something different? I currently have the jumpers in the Lavry set on balanced output mode.

  22. Hello, I dont have a great grasp of these topics so if I have some fairly base misunderstandings or bad assumptions let me know. Now onto the question. My understanding is that estats behave pretty predominantly as a capacitive load. If this is the case it would seem to me that a transconductance amp (that has not be rectified to voltage drive output/aka a 'current drive' amp) would be a fairly ideal way to run estats. Are there any amps that do this? is this how all estat amps do it and I am just not aware? If not, what are the reasons that we dont use an OTA output stage given basically all TOTL estat amps have a solid state output stage (only ex…

  23. Hi all, I’ve lurked here for a while but am active in the other regular forum. Apologies for the cold post here, but after a trade and drunken bidding on Yahoo Auctions I find myself with both an SRM-T1S and a 006t (both have pro and normal bias outputs). I would like to get the CCS mod done to one of them, likely the 006 which I would then keep. There’s likely no way in hell I would trust myself to do the mod, though I have JimL’s article. So my post is to find someone who could upgrade my 006t with the CCS mod and whatever other upgrades and updates (and voltage change) you feel would be worthwhile. I’m using it to drive (primarily) an L300LE and a NB La…
