I'm not sure how popular these were (looks like at least some ended up on VH1), but the BBC documentary series Classic Albums is on Netflix. Not the most exploratory, so if you're already well familiar with the backstory of each album they may be of limited use, but for everyone else they're definitely worth a try. Saw Rumours last week. Just finished The Band... [media=]

Doc Watson passed away today. It's been a tough year, but this one is especially tough for me. Doc was my introduction into Bluegrass music. Thanks Doc. Godspeed.

  5. The Obscurometer. Only works if you have a last.fm account (and a fair amount of scrobbles.) With jut under 120,000 plays, I have an Obscurometer rating of 75%. My friend Brent got 85.5%. What's yours?

Since my trainer has decided to stick me on a stairmaster and/or elliptical thingy for one hour six days a week, I need tunes to get me through the tedium and misery. I absolutely HATE the let's-get-moving music gyms play (fortunately, I'm in her home and have no competing ugly music blasting). I hate club/dance music for the most part and music with programed drums. I just want to forget I'm on this damn thing and make the time disappear. I've had my ipod on shuffle, and have found that some songs, usually long ones, and ones I've known for years but still love seem to work best. I start listening, get happy, and time blows by. I want to create some playlists so I don't …

  8. Going out on a limb here, has any head-caser heard the 2009 remaster of Tattoo You? I grew up listening to the original, yet all I own is a scratchy early-80s vinyl pressing. There was a time when I'd cheerfully buy any remaster, but the Terrible Age of the Brick Wall has cured me of that forever. I'd much rather track down a halfway decent CD pressing (or needledrop) of the original version than suffer through having all the dynamics crush by a modern rework. Anyone out there heard both? Bueller?

  10. I have been listening to some Flim & the BB's albums lately, not my usual preferred type of music, but I did enjoy it a lot. Music is very nice and production is very 80's, but recording quality itself was so fricking cool. Dynamic range on my original CD from the 80's is very impressive, it can go from very soft to explosive in a split second and shows what a good setup can do. I have a few other CDs like that, like some Russian choir recording, but not a lot. Any suggestion for good music with wild very dynamic recording? Binaural and extremely dynamic would be even better

While I was looking to buy some CDs, I had come across a post somewhere claiming that Japanese versions are mastered in a way that makes them better than other regions. Simply put, is this true?

One of my favorite holidays of the year. Is anyone going? Anything worth picking up? http://recordstoreday.com/ Flaming Lips - Heady Nuggs Vol 2 is tempting I kinda want Skrillex & Diplo ft Justin Bieber - Where Are You Now? Across The Universe OST. If this was the deluxe edition, I'd be incredibly tempted. As it is, it doesn't have "If I Fell" by Evan Rachel Wood. She got better at singing as the filming progressed, or she was autotuned, or both, but I much prefer her version in the movie to the Beatles' version. Monster a Go-Go Volume 1. A friend of mine would go nuts over this, and there are only 1000 copies, so if I find it, may grab it for him. …

  14. Jonathan Tinn from Playback Designs was telling me there would be some big DSD announcements this summer and fall and this is one of the biggest. Glad to see the Acoustic Sounds Super HiRez store is live on day 1 and that they have a nice variety of music in DSD. I have not looked into how they have been made and cannot attest to the sound or quality specifically, but I think if Chad Kassem is going this deep into DSD he would do it right for the most part.

Some of you folks know that I'm a fan of early recordings. One of the attractions for me is the combination of music, scholarship and cultural anthropology. Here's an article (the name just doesn't do it justice IMHO) from the NY Times Magazine that has spurred some amazing threads amongst collectors. A little warning, this is much longer than your average article but if you're interested in this kind of stuff, the time is well spent. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/04/13/magazine/blues.html

Have been shit testing this all day and must say I'm very pleasantly surprised. Throwing all sorts of obscure stuff at the wall to see what sticks, and generally the depth of what comes back is impressive. Happily listening to "Durutti Column Radio" for the last hour or so now without a single skip. Win. (Must be leveraging off the effort already put into Genius over the last few years?)

I'm not sure how long South X Southwest has been doing this live stream, but they seem to have it down. And I'm sure sponsorship has a lot to do with which stages/bands get onto the stream but there's not much that I enjoy as much as listening to bands who I've never heard before. At this level, I think they all have something to say. Check it out. If you hate who's playing right now, check back in an hour or so (between bands they run tape from their archives). http://sxsw.com/live

Don't know where else to put thus, so why not a new thread. Tyll referenced this in his http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/headphone-news-june-2014 article, and I've seen it referenced elsewhere Marc Geiger's keynote from Midem 2014 is very accessible, compelling even, as he describes how the existing music business is facing "The Innovator's Dilemma" Lots to think about, and possibly agree with. Plenty of other interesting Midem presentations on the web (the website, youtube + slideshare.net) Discuss.

A buddy of mine has been working with Winston Ma from FIM on a book about the "golden era" of Decca Records. During the last 18 months he has spent a good deal of time in the UK picking the minds of the folks who were involved with recording some of the most loved classical recordings of any era. Decca: Supreme Stereophonic Legacy was published and has been officially released. The 2 volume set includes 4 hi rez CD's. http://www.elusivedisc.com/Decca-Supreme-Stereophonic-Legacy-Ultra-HD-CD-Box-Set-4CD-Book/productinfo/FIMUHD088/
