I Can't Hear You, Speaker Man, I'm Listening to My Headphones

  1. Hi I am fairly new to this and Was wondering if anyone could give some input on these products: -Audioengine P4 Bamboo Passive Speakers -Audioengine N22 Amp -Dayton Sub 8/10/12 Would these run well together? If there are any other better options please share. I'd appreciate all the info I can get. Drake

Listened to these speakers last week at a local dealer. Impressions below written from saved notes. Source Component: Rotel RCD-1072 Amplifiers: Rotel RC-1070 pre-amp & RMB-1075 power amp Impressions: I started off by going straight into the 684, as it's the cheaper model. However, I immediately realized that my listening would be futile without a comparison of some kind, and there were a bunch of other B&W speakers in the room that could be switched between at will, so I ABX'd the 684 against the next-higher-up model, the 683, for all of my listening. Reference CD tracks included: - Alison Krauss & Union Station - New Favorite - "Let Me Touch Yo…

  3. Visited a local dealer today to audition some speakers before heading off to RMAF. Source component: Marantz DV6001 (DVDP) Amplifier: Marantz SR5003 (A/V receiver) The dealer had a sweet setup, a bunch of speakers were all lined up against the wall and there was an electronic switch panel to switch among them at will. Speakers I listened to: - Monitor Audio RS1 (bookshelf) - Monitor Audio RS8 (tower) - PSB Alpha B1 (bookshelf) - PSB Image T55 (tower) - PSB Image T65 (tower) Scattered impressions: First I'll start by saying I vastly preferred the Monitor Audio RS8 among all the others. It took a while for me to develop the preference, there was a wow fa…

Has anyone heard these before? I remember someone on Head-fi had a pair, but don't remember who. I'm currently talking to a guy in Maryland about his pair (he's selling a pair of X-Statik's, X-Voce, and a MFW-15 sub) for a pretty good price, but pick up only. I'm trying to work out the details of how large of a car I'll need. I guess I just need a little nudge to commit as long as I can find a way to bring them back to NYC. And I guess I'll find out after tomorrow's watch sale if I even have the money to buy them.

Spent some time with these speakers in the same setup that I did the last time I wrote my initial impressions. This time around we listened to his digital rig mostly (CDS3 system). Again I'm left stunned how good speaker playback gets, and how petty and overpriced my headphone system looks. We listened to mostly rock, jazz, blues and classical. First up spun some "modern" Megadeth. Hidden Treasures is one of their 90s EPs that sounds damn good and didn't fall victim to obscene amounts of compression. Angry Again has a real wallop to the kick drum, and a nice bass line that sounded absolutely real if you closed your eyes. Electric guitar sounded so sweet as well. Male v…

  6. Started by deepak,

Yesterday I made the trip to hang out with a friend I made this year. It was mainly to hear my NIN- The Fragile vinyl since my analog setup still isn't up I should have taken down more details of his setup, but briefly the speakers were the latest Avantgarde Duo 2.1s, his vinyl setup was a modded VPI Aries3, with I believe SET amps powering the mids/tweeter. The Duos have self powered woofers. Digital front end was some Naim gear (didn't listen to it much). It was in a dedicated speaker room which seemed really well setup. I wish I brought my camera. I've heard his system a few times but this is the longest listening session I've done, I was there for around 8 or 9 ho…

Finally got it to work. Of course I have to pull the amp out when I'm actually listening so the cord reaches the outlet, I'm using an ipod as source, and monster speaker cable, but it sounds amazing. I played the theme from shaft and sitting extreme (EXTREME) nearfield it sounded like I was actually sitting next to the hi-hat. The placement is awful obviously, that little green thing in the corner is my bed, which is touching the other side wall. So there is plenty of room for improvement. Eventually I will make stands or something so they can be placed at my desk, but they are just way too heavy (and so is the amp) to be supported by it.

  8. I admit that Wes Phillips' reviews of these two flagship models have got me looking at them, but everything I read seems intriguing and alluring. These are shockingly high cost items, so I am both hesitant to go too far down the rabbit hole of this fixation and yet still very curious. I also admit that the K-XR User Manual's suggestion that a balanced tape out could be used for a headphone amplifier made my heart go pitter-pat. Recognition in the highest of the high end! Anybody else heard the these and/or have any opinions on them or their design? A local dealer reps them, so I hope to get a listen later this week.

The midrange driver on one of my B&W 802 stop moving. i listed it at ebay but decided to pull it out and make it a project to fix it. Madisound suggest replacing the capacitor which i did and to my surprise, it did work and it sounds damn good. now i am in a process of replacing all the capacitors since they are about 30+ y/o (the bad speaker first to compare the sound between original and modified). i am installing different brands of capacitor (mostly poly cap some electrolitic) to match the value and fit the tight space. I bought some Mundorf Supreme and Clarity Cap for the tweeter and midrange section and will install them soon. The base is a little l…

Sound Has anyone tried these out? Seems to be in a price range between the Audioengines and the Quads. With a built in USB DAC and headphone amp, the feature list looks pretty good.

  11. PS Audio Elite Integrated stereo amplifier -- $free Polk Audio Monitor Series 2 speakers and sub -- $50 finding out the PS Audio only has stereo outputs, with no sub output -- $d'oh needing a cheap (CHEAP dammit) solution -- $ask head-case Use the PS Audio to drive the sub and get a t-amp for the speakers?

  12. Started by Jon L,

After neglecting my speakers for a while due to my recent electrostat headphone lust, I have put together my speaker rig again after receiving the DIY First Watt F5 amp. My main speakers are actively bi-amped, and I was looking for an extremely resolving amp for tweeter/midrange (Aurum Cantus G3 ribbon/Focal 7K2 midrange) beyond what my tube amps can provide. The F5 is fantabulously beautifully resolved in this range, I must say. BTW. Yes, that is the controversial Storm Audio Pandora DAC, currently used in "Master" mode, slaving my Lynx 2B spdif output from my quiet PC.

Mind blown and this is ESL based speaker coming from the same company that manufactured your computer monitor. http://www.ecinews.eu/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2258:the-benq-portable-electrostatic-speaker&catid=14&Itemid=300690 http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/benq-evolo-first-ever-electrostatic-bluetooth-speaker/

Hi, I am behind about 4 years, but apparently these are nice speakers. The lowthers have a new home, and the quads should be a nice fit. At one point there was a dealer that a lot of you guys went through for a nice price, that I can't remember, but if you had another source, let me know.

  16. Started by Dusty Chalk,

No, that's not a typo, but no, I don't truly mean "at any price" greater than US$200, I just mean this: I recently put my speaker rig back together. The Manley Stingray -- at 12 tubes, 8 of them power tubes -- is just way too warm for a closed room in the summer. I am seriously considering getting this amp as my "summer amp". What is the next step up from that? Obviously, it doesn't have any competition at the US$200 price point, but is there something in the "not much more" category that I should be considering? It'd be nice if it was a pretty strong amp (I.E. ~> 50 Wpc). The Dynaudios suck current like a Greek sucks down souvlaki. (With apologies to any Greeks out…

Title pretty much says it all...aside from also wanting to be able to listen to the Frozen soundtrack for the billionth time. They will need to be bookshelf with a footprint no larger than 12" w x 14" d. I am open to suggestions... going back in time to prevent Frozen from ever happening would be most preferable. But, a decent alternative might be some Ascend Sierra 2's. Does Beats make speakers yet?

Someone (I have a pretty guess as to who it was) got behind my electrified fence, barbed/razor wire and broken glass set on top of a concrete wall in front of my A/V system, and broke the jumper cables on my speakers. After being pissed and lecturing everyone about no one being allowed back there and turning up the current on the electrified fence, I figured it was a chance to biwire my speakers, which I'd thought about for a while, but never did. I've had all of one hour to listen last night, but it sure seems to sound better! Mostly I'm hearing better spatial resolution - each voice and instrument seems better separated from one another, vocals seem clearer, everythi…

I thought this was an interesting read over at an AV forum: Best Sounding Speakers According to Scientific Tests - Audio Video Revolution Forum Random and blind testing with members of the general public choosing their favorite speakers without knowing anything about them (ie cost or looks).

  22. AudiogoN ForSale: Bohlender Graebener Radia X3 These are some very good speakers... especially for the asking price. I can't honestly think of anything better for the price.

I’ve just finished building an EUVL F5X amp and now I’m after a decent set of speakers for $3500 which is pretty much my limit. The amp is rated around 50 watt stereo in 8 ohms. Short listed these after a couple of days searching and racking my brain... Reference 3A MM De Capo BE Proac Response 2 Usher Tiny Dancer BE 718 I owned a pair of Reference 3A royal master controls around 16 years ago, I loved them with a SET 300b amp at the time. Proac and Usher I have no experience, just read some favourable reviews. Maybe the Usher is a bit power hungry.. I dunno. Any help appreciated.

I'm looking at getting a pair of bookshelf speakers or monitors for my bedroom. My budget is around $400 for the speakers and an amp. Two possibilities I'm considering are: Yamaha HS50M AV123 XLS with something like a Super T-amp Also, something like a 3-in 2-out input/output selector would be nice, but I have no idea where to start looking for one

  25. Hi, I am looking for a set of cheap bookshelves/speakers that can take a digital input from my tv. I just got a new gt50 for the main viewing family room which has a decent sound bar. The g25 that was there went upstairs to the living room, and the stock speakers are real bad. Would love to just take the optical out from the tv, plug them in the speakers, and be done with it. I could have swore such a thing exists but I can't seem to find it. Thanks! If such a thing does not exist, i could also do a small box that would fit inside an entertainment furniture, that would be able to take a digital in, be an integrated amp of sorts, which could output into normal speakers…
