I'm going to get a SS amp to compare with the Manleys with the new Harbeths when they get here. has to have balanced inputs, can be stereo or monoblocks. Must be in the $3k or less range. No room on this one. has to have at least 200-300 watts into 8 ohms. What i want i cant afford, thats the Arye V-1xe. had one and it was the nicest SS amp i had heard or owned. Just wasnt enough for the Thiels at the time. Here are my choices so far. Finally bit the bullet and picked up a dream speaker of mine for a long time. I was able to unload my hornshoppe horns and while they were great for the price, the resolution and detail retrieval of the lowthers is in a completely different world. Lightning speed, incredibly dynamic, beautiful top end, wonderful imaging. I am also very happy with the bass response, in due to the alerion enclosure really maximizing the low end output, coupled with the Firstwatt F1, the combo is really well matched to each other.

As some of you may know, I am fascinated by older audio designs that have stood the test of time. I was reading about a new production Rogers LS3/5a in a recent Hi-Fi News, and this drove me to the internet to do more research. It definitely sounds like a speaker I am interested in hearing. So who here has heard an LS3/5a in any of its versions? Impressions?

I have been trying out studio monitors for the last few weeks now for my office at the bar. I tried the Dynaudios at $500 each but to me they remind me to much of my home rig and are way to much for my use needed. I tried the Event tr8's and either know the have great freq numbers they just don't make the music come out even enough. I tried a few KR or something brand monitors around $500 pair but they sounded to small and well..Small. I decided on the M-Audio bx8a's for the rear ported even sound and crystal clear range. The latest version of the Maggie 1.6 was powered with an ARC tube amp and Conrad Johnson preamp with my North Star M192 (Cary CDP used as transport). First time hearing these speakers I was a bit unimpressed; they were bass light and had an over emphasized top end. I'm guessing this tube system helped tame them, and IMO for $1600 these are probably the best bargain I've heard so far. Setup in a well dampened room, pulled out about 4 feet from the back walls. Hi, I've been looking for some speakers for a while. And these popped out. However, my main 2 concerns are: 1. Lifespan. Apparently from what I've read, these speakers don't last long, with the delamination and whatsoever other issues. Frankly I don't know anything about them, but I was just concerned after reading through all the searches that popped out regarding issues with old planars. So how bad is it really? As in, does it really spoil so easily, and require high maintainance? And if so, is it easily repairable? 2. Performance. As part of the renovation of my house, I moved some the cabinets in my kitchen, and there's no longer room for the hutch on my computer desk. Said hutch has held my ancient-but-beloved EV Sentry studio monitors for years. I can't set the EVs on the desk because they're not magnetically shielded in the slightest. I'm in the market for some replacements, cost $500-1,500. That's a big range I realize, but house repairs have uh, complicated my financial situation, and I'm unsure how much I'll be able to spend. Look what I found on craigslist recently. A few days ago, this system was up for sale and the asking price was $200. And then, yesterday night, I search for "turntable" and find that the listing was changed from $200 to FREE. I immediately sent email saying I'd take it, and a couple of minutes later, I receive a reply asking me to call that night. I talked to a lady for about half an hour. Apparently, the system was bought for her partner's mother around the mid-80s who has since passed away. The system has sat virtually unused for years, and she wants it out of the house. I took another trip to the local audio store so I could drool over the Shanling T-200 & T-300 CD players in person, but the main purpose was to check out small floorstanders & largish bookshelf speakers. I wanted to see if there was anything that could match the Living Voice Avatar at a lower cost. The summary is unfortunately not, but I did find a couple nice surprises. Keep in mind that my standard for good sound for small floorstanders is the Living Voice Avatar OBX-R, which is the tweaked out version of the Avatar. Ever since I sold off "The Dragon" I had been debating what I wanted to do with my speaker rig. The obvious thing to do was to just buy a new pre-amp but I also thought about selling my power amps and going the integrated route. Low and behold I found quite a deal on audiogon for a Modwright SWL 9.0SE with the bybee upgrades (yes i know they are worthless) and more importantly upgraded caps (mundorf silver oil caps which appear to have a good reputation). I've had it for about two days now and it really matches up well with my ICE Power based amps. It has absolutely wonderful tone and every note has the proper amount of texture and depth to them. Hi All- I've been using the following setup in a 10 x 13ft room now for the past several months: Quad 22L Cambridge Audio 840A Cambridge Audio 840C Technics SL1200MK2 Cartridges used include DL-103, AT440MLa, KAB/Ortofon ProS30 Phono's used include Hagerman Bugle (60db gain 100 ohm loading for DL-103) and Bottlehead Seduction (for MM) SVS 20-39 PCi Cylinder Subwoofer Blue Jeans LC-1 interconnects I only recently added the subwoofer to combat bass issues I was having due to what I guess is room compression. Well, I'm moving to Houston to start my first job on July 1st. This means I'll finally be able to put together a 2.0 setup to use with my TV. I still haven't decided what will drive the speakers, but I'm toying with the ideas of either getting a decent Onkyo receiver from Amazon or getting an inexpensive integrated amp (NAD, Cambridge 640, Baby Sophia etc...) from A'Gon. I've been having intermittent issues with my Moth Audio system that I was blaming on the amp until I recently discovered that one of them Cicada drivers is dead. Doug helped me troubleshoot and I found no short in the driver but it reads zero ohms. The other one shows 12 ohms as it should. Doug mentioned that someone much more skilled than I would be able to test it out more thoroughly, but I am not sure what the point would be unless it could be repaired. So, does anyone know of a source for Cicada drivers? Does anyone happen to have one or a pair even that they are not using and would be willing to sell? I need something that I can move with relative ease yet still give me halfway decent sound, so I guess monitors are where it's at. 1) The room: The red outlines the living room; there is no separation between it and the kitchen. Monitors will have brick in the rear facing towards regular wall paneling/drywall (or whatev). 2) The budget: roughly $2,000. The only thing I've got taken care of is the source. I just realized that I probably won't ever be able to afford a decent multichannel setup, even though I believe that is the primary benefit of the new digital formats... perhaps a lot of "stereophiles" are the same way - they don't actually have a philosophical bias against multichannel recordings, they just can't stomach the cost of buying the new equipment (e.g., 5 more speakers, amps, preamps/controllers, cables, stands, etc.). So I am a stereophile by default.

My old ass Harmon Kardon AVR-85 is losing it's channels one at a time. The surround channels are all but dead. But all the Pre outs work. So, I was thinking of using it as a Pre amp until I replace it. And get a Multichannel amp to power the 5 speakers I have now. (NHT Super Zeroes). My Velodyne HGS10 sub is still working (knock on wood). I plan on getting the Smyth Research Realiser as well, so single ended amp recommendations only, please.
