Speakers

I have a shitty insignia receiver that is only rated for 6 ohm speakers according to the manual but a pair of suspiciously cheap ribbon speakers came up on craigslist that I'm probably going to get. The problem is that they have 4 ohms impedance. If I listen at a modest volume will I risk blowing my receiver?

So after 3 months, I'm getting bit tired of needing to get up each time I want to change the volume. Assuming some unexpected expenses don't come up, I've been thinking about Adcom GFP-750, maybe in a month or two. Are there anything else I should be looking for? Also, anyone know anything about PS Audio's P-200?

After neglecting my speakers for a while due to my recent electrostat headphone lust, I have put together my speaker rig again after receiving the DIY First Watt F5 amp. My main speakers are actively bi-amped, and I was looking for an extremely resolving amp for tweeter/midrange (Aurum Cantus G3 ribbon/Focal 7K2 midrange) beyond what my tube amps can provide. The F5 is fantabulously beautifully resolved in this range, I must say. BTW. Yes, that is the controversial Storm Audio Pandora DAC, currently used in "Master" mode, slaving my Lynx 2B spdif output from my quiet PC.

I have a couple of bookshelf speakers and a small active sub I'm no longer using in my TV system and I'd like to move them to the living room, which is currently wired with Blose courtesy of the house's previous owner. Anyway, I'm thinking a 50W integrated amp would do the trick (speakers are 8 ohm and 88dB sensitive) and I'd like to be cheap -- as it'd just be for occasional ambience or the kids and the main source will probably be an iPod. Do need a sub out. NAD? Cambridge? Arcam? Fire away. Used is fine.

I'm planning on building a 2.0 speaker system for music and movies for a home-theater setup within the next 3-4 months, so I recently started researching speakers, receivers, DVD players, and HDTVs (I'm still creaking by with an analog TV so I'll have to get an HDTV before February next year anyway). Hey guys, Well I am trying to start my research into speakers...again. Last time I went into it kind of half assed, and it actually didn't turn so bad last time. Picked up some moth cicadas that mated with my old moth s2a3 and I thought they were pretty great for the price and the fact they were single drivers - very coherent, beautiful midrange, nice full tone, but obviously lacking the low end registers. I would say down to 50 it was pretty solid. the omega hemps had the bass but they were somewhat sharp on the high end and had nowhere near the midrange magic of the cicadas. As part of the renovation of my house, I moved some the cabinets in my kitchen, and there's no longer room for the hutch on my computer desk. Said hutch has held my ancient-but-beloved EV Sentry studio monitors for years. I can't set the EVs on the desk because they're not magnetically shielded in the slightest. I'm in the market for some replacements, cost $500-1,500. That's a big range I realize, but house repairs have uh, complicated my financial situation, and I'm unsure how much I'll be able to spend. I'm looking for speaker amps for a pair of 92 dB, 8-12 ohm speakers, AudioKinesis Jazz Modules. So far what I've been looking at has been anywhere from 8 to ~50 watts, although I guess I'm shooting for the 16-30 watt range. I'd like to get your guys' recommendations on brands/amps to look into. Right now, any price range is fine- I'll narrow it down later. This is for a home system for next year, but I'm antsy and like planning ahead. hi , can anyone recommend me an used excellent speaker for pc(my sound card has xlr balance, rca analog,...)? so far i only know the quad 12l active is good for pc(for the qual 12l2 , i think it won't let me use with pc). can anyone recommend me some speakers which are above level of quad 12l active? my budget for speaker pc will be around 1.5k for a used one thanks

What components do you need in the chain between the cd player and the speakers themselves to drive them and give them volume control? What brands to you recommend and why? ( Price point under $1500; goal involving, full, dynamic, relsoving sound-not too bright or edgy, yet not rollled off on highs, mids well present but not over stated, bass, foundational, but not dominant, boomy or muddy, just tight. I have a bit of a dilemma with the audio rig at my desk. I had been using a pair of Acoustic Research AR4x's that I pulled out of a dumpster, but with my new monitor there isn't enough room for them to fit properly. I need to get some new bookshelf speakers that are 7" wide or smaller, and don't require a subwoofer crossed over way high to avoid sounding thin. I have no idea what's good on the market right now, which is made even harder to figure out due to the size constraint. So if anybody happens to know some nice speakers that are that small, I'd be very grateful for the advice.

Well, since my living situation will be changing soon, I thought now might be a good time to start contemplating a speaker rig. I'm not sure of the living arrangement yet, but anticipate a typical 2 bedroom apartment for at least a year. My intention would be to use the Opus 21 as source, and the Zana can serve as a preamp. OK picked up a pair of Harbeth P3ES-2 locally at a decent price. Hooked up to my old Bryston B60R integrated (60wpc 8ohm) fed by 840c (spinning CDs and also fed optically by a macmini). Anyone here know cheap speaker cables with small/skinny spade plugs? My McIntosh 2100 has tiny speaker taps (there's a pic of it around here somewhere) and most spades won't come close to fitting, unfortunately.

Which is better in a bang-for-buck sense? Actives really appeal to me, but the inner-"audiophool" contests that passive will always be better quality. Thoughts?

I have the occasional mono vinyl, and they invariably sound like crap on stereo headphones or speakers. You get a wonderful stereo image of all the noise crud on the record's surface, while the music is a lifeless dead-center image. There also may be some sort of smearing from two speakers (that can never be exactly the same) trying to reproduce the same signal. Not long ago I heard a local fellow's pure mono setup, the speaker was a gigantic 50's or 60's Bozak cabinet with multiple drivers. The sound was very surprising, and extremely enjoyable.
