I give up. 1. Created Windows 10 boot media and Bootcamp drivers USB via Bootcamp. 2. Created Windows partition via Bootcamp. 3. System reboots to installs Windows and I get this: 4. Chose delete and format drive with same result. 5. Reboot into OS X and check disk utility and see this: 6. Reboot into Windows install again only for it to tell me it's not an NTFS partition. What the heck is the deal? This is a late 2013 iMac with Fusion Drive. All I want to do is run Brent into a wall.

We have a original Drobo DAS that I picked up from Dan a long time ago and is still going but it's gotten a bit flaky with windows 10 sleep for some reason and Drobo stopped doing software updates 5 years ago I think. Anyway I'm thinking of replacing it and I'm wondering what the current state of the art is? I'm thinking of just getting the new Drobo USB 3.0 but I was wondering if anyone else knows of something better. Right now I'm still thinking DAS because I want to keep the Backblaze backup going etc. Maybe it makes more sense to move one drive local to the machine use that for the data and backup and then go to a dedicated NAS for the backup and slimserver?

  4. Started by Sherwood,

Friends, I recently had JRiver reorganize my music folder by ARTST\ALBUM\TRACK. My old scheme was ARTIST - ALBUM\TRACK. I like the new one better from an aesthetic point of view, and because I enjoy folders. The problem is, now I have a shit ton of folders labelled something like "Bjork - Vespertine" that contain nothing except .log and .cue files, and perhaps some .jpg art files or liner notes. I prefer to embed that stuff in the track, so I don't need the extra files. I'd love to have a program that I could tell to delete any folder that did not contain (or whose subfolder did not contain) a music file. Does something like that exist?

  5. I think I'm going to. Usually I'm suspicious of new versions of Windows, since there have been a few missteps in the past, but the reviews I've read of 10 are very positive. I've never used 8, so I'll be going straight from 7 to 10. And the price is right as well!

I'm tired of paying rent on my cable modem, want to get my own. What should be my criteria? Also, my router seems to be on its last legs anyway. Also I'd like something somewhat slightly secure-ish. (Read: as secure as is possible without writing my own OS.) Right now I'm on cable, but FIOS is an option. Does that make a difference? I.E. if I switch, is there a router that I can get that I will still be able to use? The lady on the phone said "Arris". Yes/no/disagree/agree-but-with-qualifications? She actually said the one she would recommend isn't even on the list yet, it has a dual-band router, which tells me they can make it work. Yes/no/disagree/a…

My dad's computer started acting funny this morning. I don't know much about Windows. When he logged back in this morning the following things were missing: His desktop picture, his shortcuts in the taskbar were missing, his programs when you click the start button were gone, and Microsoft office longer seems to be registered. He did have antimalwarebytes delete 2 pups that were in the registry key. We also had someone changing the DSL today but he said he didn't touch the computer. I doubt it was the latter. Do you know what could be the problem and how to fix it? I don't have Windows 7 disks to reinstall everything and also my dad won't let me do that since he…

  8. On Friday, 7/24, MS switched my Hotmail account, where I send anything that may generate spam, over to Outlook Mail (Preview). Since then no email, spam or otherwise, has soon in the browser, nor mobile app. Web search for others problems shows nothing specific about Friday, but some down today, which is possibly par from most days. Anyone else have problems? EDIT: It could be a lower max mailbox size limitation implemented on the automatic user switch. That would be very MS.

My 4 year old HP Pavilion DM4 is starting to die. It's had too many bluescreens recently and the OS can't detect the DVD player (the BIOS does). So it's probably time for a replacement. Could you please suggest laptops, matching the following criteria, that you would recommend. Important: $500 to $750 tops 8M memory Either has SSD or can add one 1T disk Not important: Screen size (I mostly use a monitor) Weight (I don't travel much with it) Battery life (I mostly plug in) Thanks in advance for all your input.

Hey folks- So with CPA exam and busy season behind me, I'm finally starting to re-evaluate on what is important: having a kick ass PC to play games on. My current PC is actually pretty great. Surprised to find my i5-3570 CPU I purchased in 2012 is still completely acceptable for gaming. I did upgrade my graphics card to a GTX 980, which is awesome. So I don't see the need for any additional upgrades. What I'd like to do now is thoroughly clean the outside and inside of my PC case. My NZXT is one of those silent cases, and it does a pretty good job of keeping dust out, but nothings perfect, and I'm basically done zero cleaning the past three years. I tried some…

So Julie was trying to purchase a book for one of the girls earlier today. She went to Amazon.com and was greeted with the login screen, not the usual amazon home page. She logged in and then the screen prompted her for her billing address to be updated. She entered that as well and then stopped at the following screen when the website asked for her credit card number and ssn. I came over and tried the same on my phone and macbook air. Same thing. I tried connecting to another wifi network and regular amazon website access. Same with the phone on LTE. Would reseting the wireless router kick out whoever might be causing this nonsense or should I just be changing the wirele…

So I'm taking a 3 week vacation to the Philippines next week and I'd like to be able to stream video from various sources - Netflix, NBC Sports, HBO GO, etc. and I know that there are limitations on streaming these outside the USA. It seems like a VPN is a feasible solution. Any recommendations on which service to use? I don't mind paying for a month and I'm trying to stream via iPad/iPhone and perhaps using my laptop as a backup. Thanks!

Normally introductions of new ports and protocols are met with "oh great, another one!" reactions, but this new one is almost perfect: http://anandtech.com/show/9331/intel-announces-thunderbolt-3 I was on board with the idea, but one glaring omission made me smack my head on the desk: "Speaking of encapsulation, Thunderbolt 3 also includes an update to the DisplayPort side of matters, though likely not what everyone has been expecting. With the increase in bandwidth, Thunderbolt 3 is able to carry twice as much video data as before. However Intel is not implementing the latest version of DisplayPort – DisplayPort 1.3 – in to the Thunderbolt 3 standard. Instead…

  15. I was trying to figure out if my power was out last night during the storm so I can figure out whether to throw away perishable foods. I think my computer (imac) was on when I came home this morning (although I was tired so I certainly could have turned it on without thinking). I don't have the "startup automatically after a power failure" checked in energy saver nor do I have a UPS. If I type "last" in terminal, it has a reboot at 4:37am this morning (I was not here at that time). Also, the system log says 4:37:43 AM locationd: locationd was started after an unclean shutdown So that seems to indicated that computer shut down and restarted on its own. I d…

So I've been tasked at work to put together a spec sheet for a mobile workstation (think gaming laptop, without games) and I'm looking for some advice/assistance. The general requirements are that it needs to be able to run damn near any software that we throw at it (CADD, REVIT, Solidworks, Photoshop, etc.), store a bunch of data, but not be so obnoxious that it can't be used in a conference room for presentations (i.e. loud or stupid looking). It only needs to be transportable so battery life isn't really a concern or heft/size. Budget is TBD and quite robust, for once. So far the likely candidates that I've come up with: 1. MSI GT80 Titan 2. Origin EON17-SL…

  17. This is my first year without cable. I would like to be able to watch the Astros games in real time instead of just watching the highlights, with mlb.tv. Some suggest using unlocator dns service. Is there any security risk to using this on the apple tv or ps3? I don't think I would feel comfortable using it on the computer or router. I don't use my ps3 for anything but playing local games so it seems I could use it only for mlb.tv and playing games without much risk. https://unlocator.com/faq/ If so, has anyone been able to get around the mlb local team blackouts?

What's the latest and greatest? I'm looking at the Asus RT-AC66U. To make a long story short, I'm having some problems (not worth going into) with my current routers/APs and I'm looking to see if I can get a single unit that can cover the entire property...I'm throwing money at the problem now. Is this a good way to go?

So I am tired of being a cheapskate and using limited capability storage solutions. I need to get a real NAS that will not be limited for a while. Anyone have experience with recent Synology NASs? I am looking specifically at either the DS413 or the DS412+. Any experiences positive or negative with these units or the Synology software interface would be appreciated.

So I'm not going to bore you with all the details, but I'm looking at getting a new laptop, and the 1920x1080-on-a-15-inch-screen-or-smaller technology has been around long enough that my choices have expanded beyond 2 or 3 companies since last time. Where would I go to get advice? I.E. I'm looking at MSI, Toshiba, and HP Envy, and I don't know if these are better or worse (than, for example, my current Sony) in terms of ruggedness, value-for-the-dollar, intelligently chosen chipset combinations, etc. I would, of course, prefer better. As much as I like Sony, I know it's not famously the top brand, I'm just partial to it from experience.

I'm going to buy my niece (12 years old) a new chromebook for Christmas (her Uncle stepped on her old one and broke it, at least the screen). She really liked her other one. Has anyone recently researched them? I am think of the Asus C200 with 32GB storage and 4GB RAM. It has a SD card reader which will be good for storage expansion. It's not the fastest but seems to be well built. Is there another one that is clearly better (and still around $300 or below). 11" would be better (since she doesn't have a lot of room in her bedroom) but 13" might be ok and SD card reader is a must.

  22. Started by shellylh,

I think I am going to my dad a new basic desktop computer. His computer is about a million years old but he is way too cheap and stubborn to replace it. I think I may get him a Dell Inspiron 3000. It has a reasonable processor (Intel Quad Core 4th gen i5 3.2GHz), is not too expensive, has 8GB RAM, and I can always upgrade to an SSD if needed. He doesn't do much on it (just listens to music, some basic spreadsheets, and browses the web). I can get it with Window 7 or 8. I am leaning towards 7 because 8 is pretty different than he is used to using (XP). Is there any reason to go with Windows 8? For example, is Windows going to stop supporting 7 or is Windows 8…

  23. Started by Voltron,

I'm looking for ideas for a PC (non-Mac) laptop that can go to school daily, can do homework that is online-based (meaning Google docs, etc.), and can be a decent gaming machine for Steam-based games. It doesn't really need an optical drive and it should be light enough to carry daily. Probably 14.6-17" screen. The budget needs to be reasonable, but I don't want to be too limiting so I can get a good idea of the options. Thanks in advance for any input and specific models you can recommend.

Hello Head-case. I would like to build my own website to put on my Resume and show off my fotos and skeematics better than Flickr, and a stack of loose papers on the edge of my desk. I'm not really sure where to start. What I'm looking for: I want the website to be pretty simple No horizontal scrolling, simple/easy to read fonts with high contrasts, basically paper on the internet. A few pages for photography (street, sports) A page for DIY stuff MAYBE a blog I have a domain name in mind, that is not owned yet, so that is good. I know I need to buy it and 1and1.com looks like a good place to do this, but I'm not really sure where to go from there. …

  25. Started by Salt Peanuts,

With my MBP dead and dying, I'm looking to to build a Windows box based on either 4690(K) or 4790(K). The main purpose of the machine will be for editing photos under Lightroom/Photoshop and gaming. I'm hoping to make it as future proof as possible (not that it's really possible) within the budget. Can anyone here suggest a build/parts list for $1000 (including CPU)? I already have a monitor, mouse, keyboard, and SSD. Thank you for the help. EDIT - And I'm not doing Hackintosh - I don't need this to be more work and it needs to be.
