I saw this on a license plate: "3958 HZ", and since it's within the audible spectrum, I thought I'd ask here. Anyone know the significance?

Folks, My cousin is looking for some advice to build a computer based system for around $2000. Thats going to be some sort of DAC/Preamp/Amp, cables/wires and speakers. I'm thinking of: 1) Peachtree Nova: Signal Path International - Era Speakers & Peachtree Audio - Introducing Nova 2) Used speakers with minimum 91db efficiency. 3) Bluejean cables or Signal cables. Any thoughts?

I need a bunch of different storage boxes for audio crap, computer stuff, you know random shit that I don't want to throw out. I use those plastic rubbermaid totes, but I'm wondering if there are any good websites other than the container store with storage options.

If an amp/source was going from 220v to 110v or vice versa, is there a decrease in SQ?

My "new" old car has a cassette player/AM/FM radio and I have no cassette recorder. Does anybody have recommendations for in-car CD players? A multi-CD unit is probably unnecessary for my needs, and the same with video. I don't think I'll need a new amplifier or speakers, but I'm also completely new to car audio in an audiophile sense. I've always stuck with the stock car setup to save money for my home listening. Should I just get a cassette adapter to connect my iPod shuffle/PCDP instead?

My main PC and audio rig in the home is located in the masters which is above the kitchen. Whenever the garbage disposal is turned on, my Link DAC III goes mad and makes several clicking sounds in rapid succession (mechanical switch on/off, correct?). Other than relocating my equipment to a different room, is there a financially reasonable (under $500) solution? Would something like PS Audio Duet work for me or do I need a full blown active power conditioning?

Anyone have any experience here? Kinda tempted by the 3M MPro 100 (which appears to be running $300). With VGA and composite could be good for laptop/iPhone/Touch use.

I will soon have an RA1 for my RS1. It will be a pain to switch batteries every now and then though. I would like an AC adapter with 9V connectors to supply the unit with power. 1. What do I need to look for in that AC adapter? 2. Would 9V be enough? Since the RA1 uses two 9V batteries, would I have to use one 18V adapter? I think the batteries are in parallell in the RA1 but I'm not sure. If they are would 9V be enough? 3. Is it okey to split the adapter output cable into two 9V connectors, or would I have to have two AC adaptors? 4. How much mAh does it have to have to be enough for the RA1? 5. I read somewhere that it have to be regulated, is that true? 6. …

My old Sanyo PLV-Z2 has been showing its age. Rather than dump another $250+ into a new bulb I decided a new projector was the way to go. So I just ordered a brand new Sanyo PLV-Z2000 . The obvious solution to using US voltage electronics in Japan is a step up transformer. Or a different AC adapter if that's possible. But say I wanted to use this in Japan. Is it doable without a step up transformer? The IEC inlet on top right says EMI Filter 115V/250V~ 50/60Hz

I've recently harvested a 40GB HD from an old Ultimate TV device and would like to use it with my pc. Problem is that it's locked. I'd seen some threads about using mhd3.exe to unlock and erase it which would then allow me to reformat and reuse it. Unfortunately, I'm having no success unlocking it. Does anyone here have an idea? Not trying to hack the drive so preserving the data isn't an issue. I'm really looking to just wipe it clean and start fresh. Suggestions appreciated.

I have bunch of SACD-hybrid discs that came in rounded corner case (if you've seen or have one, you know what I'm talking about). Some of them, unfortunately, have cracks or otherwise have some damage on them. Anyone know if or where one could purchase those SACD-hybrid cases?

So I'm slowly putting together a computer, and I'm thinking about the soundcard, and I read this blurb in the lastest "Maximum PC" about the Asus Xonar Essence STX, which claims one of the highest SNR (124dB) I've ever seen on a card (yes, yes, I know you can't hear it, whatever) -- anyone familiar with this card or with this line of cards? Looking through NewEgg, they have others that they claim have low noise floor/high SNR (E.G. Asus Xonar DX). Any other recommendations? HT Omega seems to be rated pretty highly over there, too.

Per title, and no, not DVD-A, just plain DVD. I have a couple of concert films that I would like to extract the audio to CD (lossless). This is on a Mac. I played around with OSEx and mac3 something or other last night and managed to extract AC3 files for each track from one and get them converted to AIFF, but it was somewhat less than intuitive. I haven't compared the sound of said CD to the DVD yet, but it seems fine. Also, the total content was a bit outside the range of a 700Mb CD (at 1:30). If I were to compress it slightly to try to fit the whole thing on one CD, any suggestions? If I extracted the AC3 to mpeg4 (m4a?) would that save any space? Thanks -Chri…

How important is the correct polarity? Right now my source has XLR-outs with pin 2 hot, and my amp has XLR-ins with pin 3 hot. So I'm wondering whether I should order a pair of polarity switching XLR interconnects from BJC, or just use the ones I already have as I probably can't hear a difference. My system is used 100% for music listening, no recording purposes. Any expert opinions on the subject?

Being a bit of a sports junkie and football fan, I find myself recording games that I feel/hope will be special. Keeping them as part of a sports library has been a bit of a hobby of mine. It was a snap with VCR(yeah, that's way old school) but it's become very difficult with the DirecTV/TIVO situation. For the games now, I have to record the content on to my digital camcorder and then use my computer to burn the DVD. A royal pain IMO. So, I'm interested in a DVR but know little about them.
