Was pleasantly surprised to find out I was the only hire given an office (corner one to boot) to myself. Other folks were given larger rooms with better views but have to share the space with other new professors. Between all the meetings over the last 6 days, I finally had a chance to sit in a room that was a real office of my own - I had one in grad school but that doesn't really count. I get to have business cards with my name on them. I get to have my name next to the door outside. As silly as it sounds, it was those things I secretly have been chasing and wishing for all my life. Today, I officially started/continued my journey in academia as an associate professor of mathematics and an assistant professor of medicine as a dual appointment. My work schedule for the fall semester is close to 100+ hours a week between all the obligations but man am I looking forward to it all. Can't remember the last time I was ever this excited. I'm beyond exhausted from moving into the new space in 96 F weather but I'm happy. Today was a good day. Even my mom asking when I was going to get an MBA didn't ruin my mood I think I'm done with school. At least for a little while.

I have two Marvel coolers, the freestanding one that has been flawless and steady but the built-in one in a wine closet has crapped out on me and needs to be serviced and perhaps have the seals changed. My only real advice is to get two temperature zones because different types of wines and beers have different preferred temperatures. Also pay attention to the min / max temperatures for the zones because you know you want to serve your stouts warmer than your IPAs. Here are some general guidelines from Craft Beer and Brewing magazine. 35–40°F (2–4°C): Mass market light lagers 40–45°F (4–7°C): Czech and German Pilsners, Munich Helles, wheat beers, and Kölsch 45–50°F (7–10°C): IPAs, American pale ales, porters, and most stouts 50–55°F (10–13°C): Belgian ales, sour ales, Bocks, English bitters and milds, Scottish ales 55–60°F (13–16°C): Barleywines, imperial stouts, Belgian strong ales, and Doppelbocks

Before assembly: That's not a speaker stand, that's a speaker palanquin. Not really, but the way the wood extruded from all sides made me think of a palanquin. Actually, they kind of remind me of Lincoln Logs...does anyone else remember Lincoln Logs?

I've heard and loved most of the classic Grados . I've owned every pink driver model (RS1, SR325, SR100/200/300) and find they represent my favorite John Grado sound, but I always ended up selling them on. Then I found these weird things: These have the smaller red/pink drivers found on John's earliest headphones, and HP1000 gimbals. The cups are very shallow, about the same depth as early SR60s, and as a result they don't fit in the gimbals properly. You have to insert them "backwards" to get the angle right when they're on your head, but it doesn't negatively effect the comfort. They sound phenomenal. Similar to the earliest RS1, but they're designed to be worn with flats. The inscription on the buttons matches that of the prototype RS1s given to dealers, but I've never seen the cup style used anywhere else. All in all, I'm smitten. Loans available on request to SO.

I have plenty of 400VDC-rated black terminal blocks that I ordered from Mouser. Here is a part number for one of them: 651-5452258. They may not be the same one that Kevin mentioned. I'll check to see if they have their bottom covered when I get home.

My Dad has roughly about 1,500 bottles now and he owns a number of these types of coolers. My advice is to get one with nice pull-out drawers. Think of it more as a way to display the bottles you really want to drink than as long term storage. A cool/dark basement is really all you need for long term storage and aging. These wine coolers are more of a luxury, but the ones with nice pull-out drawers are really nice for choosing what to drink. You can use them for aging wines, but they aren't really necessary for that purpose. Just my 2 cents.

The original UERM was a triple armature design as well.

I think it's a pretty good deal. A hundred more than I paid and you get the Zebrawood and add'l armature. Obviously you have to add in the add'l cost and hassle from the molds and mailing. Note Massdrop is slooooow.. I'd also consider how often you'll utilize them. I use mine mostly for travel. They seal pretty well and are easy to carry so I find them convenient. Best of luck with the decision. I expect they'll be some good deals coming up in November so if there's something else you know you'd prefer, I'd hold out for them. HS

Absolutely cut to shape! Don't worry about toeing the stands in, it'll look fine. You don't want there to be any stand platform in front of the speaker drivers. I prefer a little overhang, myself, but flush is fine, too. PS That's cool about the mementos. PPS I've taken to typing, "Unrelated" when I anticipate such a merger.

Dusty, When my wife's grandmother passed away a year and a half ago, the family visited her house/farm afterwards and my father in law invited us to take a memento or two as they were going to sell the estate. My kids grabbed an original box of lincoln logs, but this past weekend they finally opened them up and have been playing with them non-stop. Such a cool toy, they don't build them like that anymore. EDIT: the forum did a very weird auto-merge of posts which made it sound like someone that can't have a coherent focused conversation, so I'm inserting this edit to let everyone know I am a normal human being. The etsy guy I linked to seems really cool, knowledgeable, very fairly priced for quality work, and communicates promptly and very well with all of my questions. The Stealth's have a trapezoidal shape to them, in that the front width is slightly shorter than the back width, the whole non-parallel thing going on. The builder is happy to and recommended cutting the top plate to match the speaker exactly, which I think would look cool, but that means for toe-in, you have to angle the whole stand, so visually it seems kind of askew with the TV furniture that is next to it. Do I go ahead and do that, or do I just have him make the top plate a normal rectangle shape slightly larger than the speaker dimensions to toe in the speaker while keeping the speaker stands set up straight on and in-line with the rest of the furniture?

DC, I can only offer my experience with the UERM CIEM's I have owned for a few years now. Mine are an older model with only a couple of armatures vs the three armatures provided with this UE product. What i can tell you is when they state reference monitor, they mean reference monitor. Very neutral IMO. So just be sure you're good with that....it is your preference. I think UE are good to deal with. Massdrop....meh. Stating the obvious, but the quality of the mold making is critical to your comfort. Don't let them get too creative with filling in gaps for hair in the ear, etc... unless they're really good. Best of luck. HS

Works great and its cheaper then mu metall cans.

I got routine blood test results. My triglyceride levels were 489 mg/dl, right before I became a vegetarian. Two years later, it's at 160. Still a little higher than I'd like (high triglyceride levels run in the family; for instance, my mother weighs a hundred and twenty pounds and has as pretty low calorie diet, but has a triglyceride level over three hundred, despite statins), but I think that's a pretty darned good result. Everything else in the lipid panel were squarely in the "normal" zone. Fasting blood sugar is under 100 (everybody on both sides of my family over the age of 30 has diabetes except for me and my mother, so I think this is a triumph!), my resting pulse has fallen under 75 (again, still higher than I want, but it was over 100 two years ago). Blood pressure has been good despite reducing the amount of medication I take. I think I'm doing pretty darned well.
