  2. Both of those just made me think ‘Antwoord lite’. Sorry, couldn’t finish either one (admittedly I’m still cranky over pining for CGAW). will come back around for Tracy.

  5. Hate to say it, I'm with you Dusty. I think some of these will catch like earworms, but usually if there's more of a novelty aspect like (as you suggest for slight similarity) Die Antwoord..... Always like Tracey Thorn, though......solo or in EBTG......

  6. The imbalance issue is still real and one set I know of is now on the fourth set of drivers. Every time it was sent back to Japan and it failed again. There were also issues with the new drivers being installed incorrectly so something is clearly going on. I do get about one email every month asking for advice with imbalance issues and the same thing stands, hit them gently on the offending side while not energized and they should spring back to life. As for the amps doing damage, you can bet your ass that amps out there will do just that. Woo amps with no output protection and laughably small ballast resistors, Cavalli amps with bias supplies which can fry the diaphragm. All those amps with a cap right on the diaphragm which is a very bad idea. Best was the Rudistor crap where he just placed huge caps in the bias supply to get rid of some hum and it had enough potential to burn it all too hell. Great plan...

  8. As I wrote I didn't write more marketing. I just wrote it can be done better and not necessarily to sell more SR-009S but to put them on the map more firmly as a brand. And it if generated a waiting list extending for a few months, that's not a bad thing for them either, no need to raise prices (but they need to give some discount if the stocks get filled up). But again, this is just my opinion and I could be wrong. First impression article in Japanese is up: https://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/topic/1117613.html

  10. By the time a lot of us got to the point of owning Stax, there was a lot less hair to deal with. Other than maybe ear hair?

  11. Stax are still stuck in the distributor model but slowly embracing e-commerce. There is a certain comfort level in only dealing with a limited amount of customers world wide and having them be your reps with anything customer related. Things are changing though as Stax now has a proper online shop in Japan where everything they sell is listed, including the spare parts.

  13. Today's project... 50" X 19" Birch butcher block, stained Gray. This will be the top of my new A/V rack, which is your typical wire shelving, but epoxy coated Black.

  18. Well it did end up costing me about 730$ all in so not that cheap. Fees in China, shipping from there to here and finally customs BS here. I'd rather have a SRM-323S but you know... I also need to do a lot of work to it before it is safe to use. It's impressive that almost none of the screws in this chassis actually work. Everything is loose and rattling, screws are too short with no actual purchase and the builder has never heard of lock washers. Now some pics, as you can tell by the bottom of the board, this is bodge city!! The PSU is completely unregulated and pretty much as basic as they get. CRC filters but that's it. Finally the VU circuit. Clearly off the shelf unit like the delay line above.

  19. We had a meet yesterday here in Houston. Great time and I got to listen to some fun setups. MrSpeakers had sent their Ether E prototypes so I brought my KGSSHV Carbon along as I'd read they require mo' power. My chain was 44/16 FLAC files via DEEZER Elite or via iTunes on my MacAir using BitPerfect > Ygg DAC > Carbon. Those that posted that the Ether's are power hungry were not kidding. The Carbon is a beast (thanks George) and uses the GR HV psu with 680uf 500v rated caps and a DACT stepper...it's a GREAT amp and absolutely makes my 007A's sing (thank you for awesome designs Kevin). Anyhow, I had to turn the knob to say 2 o'clock to get the Ether's to really make music and, as a reference, the 007A's were screaming loud at that point. The L300's there and a nice pair of 404 Signatures were really screaming at that volume level. The prototypes clearly need more work, which I figure is to be expected. If you're sitting next to someone using them, it's like you've got an old school radio playing...they bleed that much sound. Also, the micro details and that holographic instrument separation and placement are not there compared to the Stax. I expected them to hit harder down low given what a gent had told me, but with the Carbon the 007A's bass was deeper, more present and impactful IMO. The Ether's are more treble and upper mid's forward. A bit sparkly for me, but not terrible. I like the 007A's because they are what they are and I don't do peaky upper's too well anymore...getting old. Overall, fun to listen to as I like getting to play with prototype stuff, but a long way from competing with mid to upper tier Stax equipment. They are going to need one hell of an amp unless they make them more efficient. On a side note, I got to listen to some Canned Heat out of a Stax 006t with NOS tubes powering a pair of 404 Signatures and was pretty darn impressed with that rig. Great value for $ IMO. The L300's were fun, but a bit to bright for me and definitely light on the lower mids and bass front. HS
