Speaker Porn

My first high end speakers were paradigm monitors. Later, I upgraded to the studio 100s v.1 before permanently moving to Von Schweikert. I'll always have a soft spot for that Canadian company.

Ah - the good old battleship grey Cambridge Audio livery. It was panned by the reviewers, as were the buttons on the CD player (they described them as reminiscent of poking dead flesh). Very unfair, b

  • I dunno, can i post this here? The leather was just an idea - making some matching wood pulls would be cool - maybe when things die down at M&O of course my speaker cables are too short

What Von Schweikerts do you have? I've owned a pair of VR4 Gen IIs for a number of years now; still happy with them.

Most of us lose our soft spot between 7 and 19 months.

I have the VR-4jrs. I bought them when they first came out many years ago. Still happy as well.

I first met Albert (RIP!) when he was introducing his original VR4 for the first time in public.  I thought they were incredible value for performance, which was true of VR4 Jr that came later.

Seems like many pioneers in audio are passing away one by one...😰

Shit... I didn't realize that he had passed away, and just recently too. RIP Albert.

^ WTF?! didn't know he passed either. He was my favorite speaker designer. His high end (read: uber expensive) speakers are among the best out there IMO

Clearaudio Bluemotion turntable with the carbon fiber Satisfy tonearm. And I know it isn’t centered. It is because of the cable length.

The room has plaster walls which help dampen but it is a 115 year old house so I do the best I can. There are windows on all the walls so not much to do there. It is a big space behind, about 500 sqft total or so. It does sound good to me and it continues to impress me. I will likely upgrade the amp soon, it is about 12 years old now. I think there are better suited ones today, will probably go to monoblocks. Martin Logan has a very specific sound and these are no different but with the big powered subs they hit harder than I was expecting but still very musical.

NOLA Brio Trio set, Mike and I heard these at the Florida Audio show and really liked them. I just picked up a set and am blow away with the tone and timbre of these

Jim, I was going to argue that it's quite possible that it could belong to a married gay couple. Then I noticed the plywood speaker and component plinths. Not possible!

That stand does look like the one sitting next to my computer desk now.  The speaker stands looks like black versions of the silver ones I have in storage.

Aardvark Baguettes system, I'm pretty sure. The rack and speaker stands are both Solidsteel. He went batshit crazy with those room treatments. He stuffed polyfill fluff behind each of the larger diffusers. I'm pretty sure he ended up taking it all down because it eventually drained all life from the music.

I wonder how MAGA rallies sounded on that system?

Yeah, that’s what made me think it was his.  He also went batshit crazy in terms of downsizing, said he wanted to go the way of Steve Jobs or the Dali Lama or someone.  He was a nice guy though, gave a bunch of us stuff, very sharing.  Just going to leave that Trump stuff alone, I don’t think I will ever figure out Trump supporters’ ability to turn a blind eye to the evil that he does.

^IIRC, those speakers were super-inexpensive Insignia brand bookshelves from BestBuy some time back. The juxtaposition of them against the rest of that gear is astounding & wonderful.

^^ I thought so too, I used to own those.  Apparently with mods they sounded pretty good....they were like $50 a pair IIRC.

Makes perfect since really... A completely unpredictable system, for a completely unpredictable guy.

And yes, he was a nice guy. And he had a right to his opinions. He just didn't want any criticism of those opinions, and that was never going to happen here.
