i'm on a roll... the kgsshv

Featured Replies

Thanks Birgir.

I am planning to start a mini KGSSHV boards GB. I'll be using the kgsshv16mini.zip for the amp board and kgsshvpsminifinalstn9360.zip for the PSU. Can you confirm if the following board sizes are correct?

Thanks!

kgsshvampv16mini: 183mm x 99mm

kgsshvpsminifinalstn9360: 176mm x 167mm

  • After 5 years from the time I acquired the PCBs and parts, I finally took advantage of the free time created by the pandemic and completed my KGSSHV.  This is the offboard version with +/-500V supply.

  • Not sure if we have a KGSS thread but I'll just post this here.  So last year it dawned on me that I built my first KGSS amp 15 years ago and something had to be done to celebrate that.  It started of

I noted an error on the silkscreen for kgsshvpsminifinalstn9360.zip file, the stated STN9360 should be KSA1156.

:)

I think the kgsshvpsminifinalstn9360 board can accommodate both KSA1156 and STN9360. The STN9360 will need to be mounted vertically while observing the pin out specification. See Kevin's post #4014 in this thread.

Although I can use additional clarification about the use of 270V zener with KSA1156.

It would be great too if someone can share some insights of the pro and con between the choice of the two devices.

Anybody try with the amp boards vertical? I have a chassis idea/approach that would utilize this, and it would seem to allow greater airflow over the sinks if anything.

Anyone have an appropriate part number for the servo cap? Most of the parts I've bought are too wide, and the leads are too thick.

I'm making an order to Mouser for some BH stuff but I figured I'd polish this off while I'm at it.

John. Why are you giving away your phone number ? :)

I don't know if you would parallel the device to limit it to 270V or put it in series with the collector or emitter?

the ksa1156 is a 400 volt device. The 270V zener across it prevents it from

blowing up on turn on. You can leave the zener there for the 600v part

Thanks Kevin. That is what I figured.

Nope, no carbon files have been tested.  You have been warned as that one was a rush job.

Current is fixed so the voltage is the variable.  I won't be going over 400V with this one, same as the Megatron.

If anyone wants some recent KGSSHV boards, I have two extra sets for the on-board heatsink version. kgsshvamp14mini.zip and almost kgsshvpsminifinal.zip (except it's version 1.0, not 1.1 — I didn't check closely what changed here between the previous final version and the current final version :) ). Please PM me if you're interested.

in the kgsshv psu can I get away with a 2W rating for the 15 ohm sense resistors? I was going to use some 3W-rated pulls from a busted supply but there's some soot and possibly cracking on the bodies

Thermal ratings on resistors are a crapshoot at best (hello Mills!!) so a 2W might work but it also might not.  Try it and then measure them...  :)

Glad I'm no the only who has had trouble with Mills resistors and there blotchy thermal heat dissipation ratings.

One more KGSShv onboard that I made for a friend

Bel Canto?

I love the the look as well as well as dual jacks.

looking very nice

reminds me of something but i can't remember what it is

It reminds me of Goldmund preamps. Also the Spectral preamps made in the 90's (I think). Never heard the Spectral but a couple of Goldmund preamps I listened to were very nice sounding gears.

Nice build. It looks very slim. Does it use shorter heatsinks or it's an optical illusion? Some interior photos would be great!

Bel Canto it is. I like it a lot.
