For the non-parents among you, this will probably seem fairly meaningless, but... When I got home from the Cincy meet on Saturday, my son had made his first poopy in the potty without direction! He turns two in about a month! Doggone smart kid, and freedom from diapers is on the horizon!!!!!

About 11 years ago as best I recall, I had to buy a pair of crutches and use them for several weeks because of a severely sprained ankle. Fast forward to tonight when I was on Skype chatting with my former fiancee's daughter who is getting married this summer and has been pestering me of late to "sponsor" one thing or another in connection to her wedding (someone is sponsoring her bridal shower, someone else her flowers at the wedding, someone else the photographer, etc.) and suddenly I've been more like her real dad than the man himself. I told her that I'd sponsor the green beans, but she claims they're not included on the menu. I'll probably get stuck with the e…

Bad news, last month my employer lost the contract to import Siltech cables from Holland. Since that was all that we did I was sort of out of a job. Good news! I am moving to Pennsylvania and forming a new company (Until the incorporation is completed I won?t release the name). So instead of being an employee of the importer of Siltech cables I will be the new importer of Siltech cables. Same job, only now I can?t complain about my boss. The short-term bad news is that I am trying to start a new company, find a location for the company, find a place to live, and move from Boston all within a few short weeks. Busy doesn?t adequately describe this month.

Do you guys remember that desktop thing that seemed to abound in the 80s that was filled with blue and clear liquid and tilted back and forth and when it did the blue liquid separated from the clear and created a "wave" effect? Well, what the hell was the blue liquid? I ask because my son just broke a water filled thing that had the same liquid combination, and the contents have a very strong smell. Almost like industrial strength bathroom cleaner, but without ammonia. Any assistance is appreciated.

  12. ...Things/Stuff/Places to photograph? I shall be in nyc on the 2nd and 3rd of May. There are all those bus tours one could take and absent suggestions I might just do that. However, if the locals feel my time might be better spent not doing that, I am open to suggestion. If anyone would like to walk around during the day or perhaps meet up for lunch let me know. Any company would be much appreciated. The last time I was in the city was in 3rd grade so I am looking forward to spending the 2 days walking around. Not into the whole club/bar scene (I don't drink or party). Will be at the mercy of public transportation for getting back to dad's apt in little ferry, nj so k…

Considering getting one (Bosch brand) as an upgrade to go with the soon to be installed completely new furnace and AC system. Sounds awesome. Energy savings, save money after several years, current rebate from ComEd, and we have wind sourced electricity. Especially concerned about reliability and durability due to Chicago winters. Also a new model and apparently the first that can be used with any other brand AC/furnace. Anyone have experience?

  15. My sister is overseas in Bulgaria supporting our government and our troops, and in between supporting them, she's doing volunteer work for a dog rescue organization, so I guarantee you this is legit. If you are even remotely considering getting a dog, please do seriously consider her plea and very generous offer. And yes, this is the same sister that is sending me the Bulgarian cat. Contact me for contact information, and I'll either put you in touch with my sister or one of the people who run the center directly.

Just in case anybody was watching.... We're all pretty happy around here today that my friend and former colleague Getty photographer Joe Raedle, AFP photographer Roberto Schmidt, and AFP reporter Dave Clark were released unharmed today after being captured by Libyan forces on Friday. Considering what a nasty place Libya has turned out to be (50-some attacks on journalists and a couple of fatalities in just a couple of weeks) and the circumstances of of Joe's going missing, which weren't auspicious, we were sweating it big time. We're pretty relieved. Welcome back Joe! http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/florida/fl-raedle-libya-20110322,0,1737314.story

  18. To our fellow canadians who have shipped to the states - what is your experience regarding shipping carriers and our borders in assessing import/duty fees? I picked up a mapletree used on audiogon and would like some info on how to avoid them if it is an issue.

I desperately need a good desk lamp. Using the computer as a light source just isn't a great idea for many reason. I noticed that Softech DL-90 has really good reviews on amazon and I like the idea of using LEDs and having a natural-like light source. I was wondering if anyone has used a similar type of light or has any alternatives?

It is with great pleasure I bring you one of my most ambitious projects, Photography in Medicine. The idea was born of some random discussions my advisor and I had over the summer and after incessantly annoying, emailing and calling a lot of people, it has finally come to fruition. You can read more about it at www.photographyinmedicine.org. Chris Evert Children’s Hospital has graciously allowed full access to their general pediatric, pediatric oncology and pediatric ICU wards where we will give the admitted children cameras and go around with them taking pictures of whatever they find interesting. The hospital plans on displaying the images in their main lobby in Mar…
