Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Started by Spychedelic Whale,

Hi, this sounds like a knowledge community sharing the same interest thats why I decided to come here, this my first hello to you. Going to the point I bough first and MS1, and to me doesn't sound near to what I would call decent hi.fi so I decided to go with the RS1 and the same happened. There was an improvement but not much. But this is straight from a 20$ Creative Stone Plus Mp3 Player and laptop. I ordered a minimax and gamma 2 when bought the rs1, the amp arrived but waiting for the dac to use it. The rs1 at least with crappy source doesn't make for me it just sounds 2 cheap speakers (sorry grado fans) . So I'm preparing my self for the eventuality of th…

Ugh.. I have sent them 5 unanswered emails, as well as called three times. All I want is a pair of K271 velour pads, and the foam inserts from a K240. Can anyone advise me here?

  3. Started by thrice,

So there I was just replacing the black olives when BAM, there goes the little black tube that the foamies slide on.  Anyone know if this is something Shure will even replace/repair? Gah! I use these too and from work everyday. Well, the Senn PX100 I ordered will be getting some serious time when it arrives.

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about a new headphone .... or modded headphone called the Alessandro MS2 Magnum. A head-fi buddy mentioned this to me. The phone will cost like $200-300 more than the standard headphone and supposedly be very PS-1 like. Anyone?

I know some people are going to want to burn me at the stake for this , but I have come to the conclusion that I really, really like the sound signature of the ATH-ES7. I have seen them described as having snarly mids, closed phone honk, and artificial unnatural sounding mids , and I have really, REALLY tried to NOT like them, but it's useless, I just can't help really enjoying them. In fact I am enjoying them so much I have been wondering if there is a full size circumaural headphone that has a similar sound signature, especially when it comes to the mids, though I must say I also like the way the highs, mids and lows are balanced on the ES7. The reason for this is t…

After several weeks, I finally received the 701s. They've have a bout 85 hours on them now I'd say. I'm really starting to enjoy them and their, nice, deep, but not overpowering, bass. I've been running them mainly out of the Prehead, but I'm happy to report that they sound great out of the Gilmore v1. The soundstage is extremely vast, similar to the CD3000, but I'm thinking not quite as exaggerated. Still, the soundstage seems a bit unrealistic, but not distractingly so.

  7. Started by Thelonious Monk,

a headphone that handles brutal, percussive death metal with ease, in addition to not sounding cramped whilst playing symphonies. it sucks that two of my favorite types of music are totally diametrically opposed, from a sonic standpoint. the headphone needs to: - handle pounding double-bass, extremely distorted electric guitar, guttural vocals & thick, accented basslines.. lots of bass impact without getting muddy - not be bright and sibilant on poorly recorded black metal with lots of tape hiss - have a decently sized soundstage to handle large-ensemble symphonies and other types of classical music: such as beethoven, ives, schumann, wagner, gorecki, et cetera..…

So apparently, they're balance-able. Set up to work with the Sony PHA-3 through....wait for it...yet another (set of) connector(s)! More words

  9. Started by Syous,

Yuck, its like the soundstage collapsed or something...I much prefer the bowls in all aspects (don't hurt me please). Anyways, I'm really quite impressed with the RS1s after running the whole gamut of commonly recommended headphones on HF. Weird thing is, I use to own a pair of SR225s and they became extremely uncomfortable after 30 minutes, but the RS1s I can wear for any length of time without my ears throbbing. I'd say they're more comfortable than my pair of HD580s because of less clamping force and possibly due to the weight differential. The comfort factor is certainly contrary to my expectations and a pleasant one at that. This is the first time I've felt mo…

  10. Started by Knuckledragger,

I've had my TakeTs for not quite a month now. Truth be told, I've barely listened to them. When they arrived from the Land of the Rising Sun, I was in the middle of major house renovations, and I had a houseguest. When I finally connected them up, I found then amusing, but there was a lot lacking with the sound (like the entire midrange.) I heard potential, but mostly I heard what was wrong with the gear upstream of the H2/TR2. This afternoon, I got back my old Halfer P125 power amp. Back in the 90s, it used to drive studio monitors, but it's been a dust collector for the last five years. I haven't heard it in ages, but what I remember was that it imbued small speaker…

I managed to get a pair for pretty cheap, but I'm not really expecting much. At the very least I hope they can trump the KSC-75 for movies and laptop use.

Having a pair of closed headphones that I really like would be very useful for a long lasting happy relationship with my husband. I really like the sound of the JH13's but don't really like having IEMs stuck in my ears. I have been really enjoying my "new" Stax setup (404LE + KGSS) so the natural question is whether I should get a pair of 4070's. My main concern: fit. Having a woman's sized head, being that I am a woman, can be a problem. Oh yeah, and they are not exactly cheap but it would be worth the cost if it was something that I really used a lot. I assume that $1700 from Woo Audio is about the best price I am going to get. Any comments?

  15. Hi guys, Where i am living i don't have many opportunities to test headphones and equipment. So i have to blind shot with what i am ordering. I am listening to Jazz/Indie/Soul/Alternative Rock/Electronica/Female vocalist etc. And I want to use my FLAC collection via my laptop. Please recommend me a full setup for an about 800$ (second hand is OK, but i am in Europe). I don't care much for the mobility and if is upgradeable will be great. Thanks in advance.

Since this post would get lost in the ever growing Stax thread I'll post it here. If you damage your expensive phones doing this it's your own fault so don't come running to me. Be very careful with any tools this close to the drivers as one slip can destroy them. You have been warned!!! All you need to do this mod is some blutack, a screwdriver and the patience of a saint to get the damn pads on again. First job if to remove the earpads by simply pulling onto the top edge and they come off. Also remove the spring underneath as it will only be in the way. Simply pull it out of the rubber grommet. Now there is a black plate with 4 screws holding it to the phones togeth…

Anyone balance their Edition 9s and if so any comments on the change from SE? My balanced experience is pretty limited to the Senn line where there is a decent change.

I have been trying to score a pair of HD580's recently and have noticed that for the prices I have been receiving I can almost get a pair of HD600's. I found one pair for 210 with a Audigon rating of 8/10 and another pair for 250 with same rating plus a Red Clou cable upgrade. the plan is to occasionaly use them with Headamp AE2 and mainly at home with Onkyo reciever for movies late night. I have an older Sony DVD player. When I bought this player, I researced it pretty heavily and bought it because it was pretty highly regarde for it's SACD\dc playback. The future plan is to upgrade to Bluray and then take Sony player and run it through a home amp (for example Gilmore Li…

  20. Hi guys, I had a Sennheiser HD595 for many years and that was an okay headphone and I've used it for 8 maybe close to 10 years now, but now that I'm beginning to learn musical instruments and starting to appreciate music for fully, I'm in the market for a set of new headphone and was hoping if anyone could perhaps point me in the right direction or better yet, give me a few recommendations. The headphone's usage will be primarily for home listening. The range of music will be predominately classical & flamenco guitar (acoustic), piano, and sometimes jazz, blues, progressive rock, ambient, electronic (lol i guess i listed pretty much all the genres here) but …

  21. So the OII's arrived, which makes the question of an appropriate amp more urgent all of a sudden. With Stax SRD-7 MkII powered by my heavily modded Bottlehead 3 watt 2A3 SET and 5 watt Almarro single-ended pentode, I can get sound that satisfies me enough with HE60 and HE Audio through various tube/capacitor/cable rolling. OII's give me that magical single-ended intimacy through this setup, but the bass suffers a lot, both in quantity and impact, much more than the other 'stats I have. So what 'stat amp would power all these 'stats convincingly without breaking the bank? Woo GES/WES, eXStatA, or get a better transformer box with bigger amp? I have never q…

Well I do. This is a lower serial # pair which I got for recable. After recabling them I spent some time doing tests on the stock cable and I must say Sony really screwed up here. 0.9ohm for the channels and 0.6ohm on ground. The ground is a shield running through covering a PVC covered wire. Looking at the wire itself since the insulation is clear allows me to see the stock wire is all oxidized! So in short. Cheap thin wire pulled in through tubing and then sleeved with black material. Good job Sony on such a nice high end headphone. Here is an after picture: More pictures here: http://apuresound.com/images/cables/v3/r10/ Say what you will, but I am disa…

  23. I was asking this before, not here, but I do not have that impression that these were ever tried by somebody. As far as I know you can not buy them in Europe or U.S.A., but in Russia is no problem. When they came out, like year ago, they were like USD 250-300 and now you can get them for like USD 140. So, the question is, anybody who can share? I am not looking for an review, cos I have seen them, just need "inside" information, if you know what I am talking about, someone from community... THX

  25. https://geardiary.com/2017/07/25/even-h2-wireless-headphones/ My Christmas present this year! So, I haven’t been able to enjoy high end audio gear for almost three years now due to an inner ear infection which left me with high frequency hearing loss above 8khz, tinnitus, and intolerance to spl above 80db ... all only in my left ear. If you’re interested, it’s called secondary endolymph hydrops. Basically I have too much pressure of the fluid in my left inner ear. It sucks. Nothing sounds good any more. Detail in my left ear... gone. Soundstage ... gone. Anything above a minimal volume hurts in my left ear. Minimal volume which is tolerable…
