Just received my, bought used, and wonder which year of release are yours please. My is from year 1988 made in Germany with old fashion big double CD case. Looks like the first run, but I am not sure, cos most of what I see on Ebay now are year 2000. I was simply wondering if there any quality differences between 1988 and say 2000. To know this you have to hear them side by side, so, maybe someone had the chance to do so, please share then...Not that my are bad, but its just 20 years old, quite exceptional, for me anyway. THX

So I was talking with Colin on Sunday, and I decided we need to have a darkest desires thread, so feel free to pop in with whatever metal, black metal, goth, industrial, or experimental music you've been listening to lately, have questions about, or need recommendations on. This came about because Colin and I realized we had similar tastes in music, but I couldn't remember the names of all the bands that I liked, so I'd start by going over those again, mostly just as an exercise in memory more than anything else. The Gathering -- not really metal, although they used to be before Anneke joined them. Personally, I'm really happy with where they went, and sad that the…

So, anyone else getting excited about this? Admittedly I'm a fanboy to the nth degree. But Fox Confessor... remains one of my all-time favorite albums, her back catalog is incredibly strong, and that voice? There just aren't the words. More and more is starting to come out... The promo vid: The label's site, with the free DL of the 1st single, "People Gotta Lot Of Nerve" ANTI- Neko Case The great NY Times magazine article from Friday: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/15/magazine/15neko-t.html?_r=1 And probably what's gotten me the most excited about it... So, just a question for ya'll.. how many CDs do you have with pre-emphasis and what do you feel is the best way to handle playback of these CDs? In my case, they are mostly Japanese recordings. If you rip music off these discs, do you handle this in the software domain? If you're not ripping music, it seems like a lot of newer equipment doesn't handle this spec at all... In the DIY realm, what do you think of handling this in a passive fashion, much like an RIAA circuit, pros/cons?

For some inexplicable reason, ~70% of my listening these days is Grateful Dead (or JGB). As background, I hated the Dead back in high school (went to a US private school, and found these WASPy deadheads quite annoying). At college, less annoying but couldn't care less about the roommates who were into the Dead. I've been to one and only Dead concert - Madison Square Garden in the '90s - more freaked out by the freaks than enjoying the show. Fast forward to today, I keep reaching for my GD CDs (or equivalent FLAC/ALAC). I've belatedly come to appreciate GD. I just spent $$$ ordering 9-CD Winterland '73 set, Terrapin Station 3-CD limited edition, Cow Palace, Dozin' At…

In the tradition of the following threads... '07 Mid-Year Report Card '07 Year-End Report Card '08 Mid-Year Report Card ... it seemed time, or even past time, to revisit this tradition. Each year I find an album or two worth checking out thanks to the impressions in these threads by those here at the -Case. Unfortunately my preliminary list has 30 titles released in '08, and countless others that are a year or two old but are new to me. So I'm going to need to make some time to sit down and go through them, slap a grade on each and follow up with the appropriate comments. Despite tales of the downfall of good music, I found this year to be better than decent (even…

To ensure people are in the know here as well this is the latest and greatest from CanJam 09 speakers. We hope to have a few more but this was the one that I know we needed to have based on the work he and Joe have done with the Blue Note series. Now I just have to make sure I can get a seat. Well hats off to Voltron for setting this up for CanJam 2009. Steve Hoffman and Joe Harley (Music Matters) have graciously agreed to speak at Can Jam Saturday 5/30/2009. The talk is going to center around their recent ground breaking work with the Music Matters Blue Note reissue series. For those that have not seen Steve talk, the hour or so is filled with amazing music and anecd…

I thought this article from PC World was interesting. I copied and pasted the article below: Vinyl Revival? Records Move on CDs in 2008 - PC World Vinyl Revival? Records Move on CDs in 2008 Lucas Mearian, Computerworld Jan 3, 2009 10:44 am Recommends Audiophiles have long argued that vinyl records offer better sound quality compared to CDs or MP3s, but their stoic loyalty in the face of change was seen as little more than nostalgia over the 25 years digital recordings have dominated the music industry. In recent years, however, sales of LPs -- that's short for long-playing records -- have more than doubled onl…

Though its a band I don't listen to that much, maybe because I lost all of their CDs over the years, but TMBG has consistently been one of my all time favorite bands since I was 13 years old. Back then I only had ears for bands like Metallica, GNR, Slayer, and Pantera, but somehow TMBG squirmed their way in there. They spoke to my dorky metal heart in a way no band really has since, except maybe Phish. Anyone else a fan? I never see any TMBG in the WAYLT thread so I thought I'd ask.

Following a discussion in another thread I was wondering if some of you were using the WEB to buy used CDs. One nice example from where I live: Musique du faubourg - Accueil I'm often too busy (read lazy) to go and spend time looking for CDs on location.... Amicalement PS Even GPH could find me a nice Michel Louvain's CD in there...

Anyone know what Super High Material is? Does it mean compressed to audio death, or is it actually a good thing? Houses of the Holy Oh, and you can keep your "early Pink Floyd" and "Flaming Lips" and the like jokes to yourselves. Bwa-ha, very funny, so funny I forgot to laugh. Yeah, why don't you marry yourself. Ew, that's disgusting.
