  1. I'm not talking about bands or singers no one here would listen to, but about the bands people whose opinion you respect seem to like a lot, but you just don't get. I'm sure I've got more than this, but here's a start. Opeth: very silly stuff Dream Theater: C'mon people, this is as corny as it gets Flaming Lips: interesting for a minute, then yawn Portishead: okay, not bad but still unlistenable Bright Eyes: a couple great songs, but pretentious drips Ryan Adams: okay, a good song or five, fav is an Oasis cover, but blech

  2. For me, I would love to see Tom Waits, Neil Young (not sure if these guys even tour anymore - with advanced notice, I would even consider flying to see the concert). Maybe Radiohead, Flaming Lips if they ever come to HK.

The entire membran sacd collection is available from jpc.de for the unbelieveable price of about $5 per disc. All classical of course, the bach organ music (18 discs) is just wonderful. Also the olympia jazz sacd's (from the olympia jazz club in france) are available for about $10. Fixed price shipping of about $13 for all orders over $50.

Listen for a lesson in American culture history. This record is like a time machine; the distinct musical geography + Lunsford's endearing baritone make it a classic.

  9. So... I subscribe to several BBC podcasts, most are from the output of BBC Radio 4 such as Thinking Allowed, Material World and In Our Time. I downsized the number to which I subscribed at the start of the year after I realised that I had no hope whatsoever of managing to get through an unheard backlog of over 4000 podcasts with an average running time of between 30 and 45 minutes. Some of them I'd never even listened to once and it was just the hoarder archivist in me which kept them. I now have a couple hundred unheard, but the number is decreasing steadily. Fast forward to yesterday when I decided to expand my subscription list with something new and, it would se…

Well, last year I started a thread and never did a list. Not this year. Unfortunately a change in jobs around mid-year has left me with considerably less time to explore for new music. This has left me in a bit of a rut with music, and has also left me without a lot of exposure to second-half 2009 releases. But for what it's worth, my abbreviated list is below. Neko Case - Middle Cyclone What list of mine couldn't start with Neko Case? I figured it would be my album of the year after the first listen, and many months and two live shows have done nothing to change my mind. If anything, seeing her perform has allowed me to appreciate some of the songs on the al…

The single Earth Intruders is on the net and radio. Produced by Timbaland, very different from her other songs but IMO very good and continues to show how diverse a producer Timbaland can be.

  23. Source (Among Many Others): http://www.black-sabbath.com/news/index.html I have to post this because Ozzy/Sabbath got me into music. Sure, they will not be at the top of their game live due to their age, but I am very curious about the album. Could be great, could be bad. As long as Ozzy stays away from the writing and lets Tony and Geezer do their thing, it certainly has a chance. I will always see Sabbath live, because to this day, I have never heard such an awesome live guitar sound as Tony's. That alone, is worth the price. Going to be interesting...

Anyone know of a good resource for determining the details of audio tracks of Blu Ray disks? I was browsing in the store, and if I hadn't picked up the Cure Trilogy Live in Berlin and looked at the back, I never would have known that there was a stereo 24/96 track on it. Wouldn't mind knowing if there are others out there. I'm sure there are some good high-res surround disks, but I'm of course mostly interested in stereo. Yes, I already know about the 2L label (DSD and such, music-only Blu-Ray disks), and of course the Nine Inch Nails Ghosts I-IV was the first Blu-Ray I ever bought. And yes, while googling, I did stumble across that Celine Dion disk. Perhaps if …
