Well, last year I started a thread and never did a list. Not this year. Unfortunately a change in jobs around mid-year has left me with considerably less time to explore for new music. This has left me in a bit of a rut with music, and has also left me without a lot of exposure to second-half 2009 releases. But for what it's worth, my abbreviated list is below. Neko Case - Middle Cyclone What list of mine couldn't start with Neko Case? I figured it would be my album of the year after the first listen, and many months and two live shows have done nothing to change my mind. If anything, seeing her perform has allowed me to appreciate some of the songs on the al…

I've been getting some free concerts (streaming, not download) from Qello, and I know there's at least one other Styx fan (Mikey?) so thought I'd share -- doesn't even require signing up (they're trying to promote the snot out of it, so they're actually releasing some entirely for free. Styx Peter Gabriel If you follow them on Facebook, there are others -- Michael McDonald doing Motown, Waylon Jennings being Waylon Jennings, etc. Highly recommended. Feel free to share other services. What you got? There was a place in Amsterdam that used to stream every show they ever had come through their doors, saw The Gathering perform the entirety of Black Li…

Wow looks like a cool line-up this year: http://www.bluegrass.com/telluride/lineup.html I'm probably not going unless Alison Krauss & Union Station show up again, but since they have a new album coming out in April, my guess is that they might be there. Anyone think they might travel out for this?

So, just a question for ya'll.. how many CDs do you have with pre-emphasis and what do you feel is the best way to handle playback of these CDs? In my case, they are mostly Japanese recordings. If you rip music off these discs, do you handle this in the software domain? If you're not ripping music, it seems like a lot of newer equipment doesn't handle this spec at all... In the DIY realm, what do you think of handling this in a passive fashion, much like an RIAA circuit, pros/cons?

So, this http://www.head-case.org/forums/music/5079-what-you-listening-part-two-472.html#post357782 made me listen to Afro Cuban All Stars, and I like it very much. I've never listened to such a kind of music before, no Jazz, no Fidel Castro, no Yada Yada, nothing. Please recommend me some more

I've really been getting into Multichannel SACD's and DVD-A's lately. Too bad they're all pretty much dead formats. And many of my favorites are out of print, and going for insane prices on fleaBay and such. Captain Hindsight says, you should've bought them when they were first out to begin with! OK my job is done here, goodbye!!! <whoosh> <sigh> -Ed

At some point or another, we have all lusted after people's gear signatures. However, whose music collection would you like to have? For me, probably Deepak. I'm not sure why, but with some of the things he's sold, I wonder what he's keeping

My baby gets married within the month and we haven't been able to agree on song for our father/daughter dance. Neither one of us dances particularly well so something easy to move too is required. Suggestions appreciated.

Found this on YouTube via Facebook, the full concert without all of the overdubbing and post-processing that mucked up the commercial version that I've been listening to for nearly 40 years now. Whether there is a God or not, I sure hope this gets put out on vinyl soon... very soon! I could care less about the 'footage' in terms of the video, it's the audio that sounds amazing! PART ONE: PART TWO: PART THREE:

The Tape Project, wherein they make dubs off the original master tapes with custom built gear and you get albums on 15ips 1/4" half track stereo tape. Reel to reel tape, as close to the master tape as you'll ever get without owning the actual master tape. The catalog is pretty limited, unfortunately.

For some inexplicable reason, ~70% of my listening these days is Grateful Dead (or JGB). As background, I hated the Dead back in high school (went to a US private school, and found these WASPy deadheads quite annoying). At college, less annoying but couldn't care less about the roommates who were into the Dead. I've been to one and only Dead concert - Madison Square Garden in the '90s - more freaked out by the freaks than enjoying the show. Fast forward to today, I keep reaching for my GD CDs (or equivalent FLAC/ALAC). I've belatedly come to appreciate GD. I just spent $$$ ordering 9-CD Winterland '73 set, Terrapin Station 3-CD limited edition, Cow Palace, Dozin' At…

So, I have accumulated a good amount of Opera over the years and have decided to take a systematic approach to listening through it. Some of the stuff has decent libretti and notes included, but I am looking for some additional external sources. I definitely would like a compendium that includes English translations, as I have a lot of Euro releases without any English, but also looking for reviews of performances and what not. Any recommendations of some things I can grab on Amazon? My goal is to do headphone (audio-only) listen-through and then BluRay / move theater / live and then back to a speaker rig (audio-only, probably) over say the next 3 years.

Not asking who you think is the best. But who do you find your playing the most when it comes to trumpet? Piano? Sax? Seems like I listen to more (way more) Lee Morgan than any other trumpet player, maybe more than any other jazz. Followed by Freddie Hubbard Wynton Marsalis Piano is not close either. I think Gene Harris rules! Gene Harris Bill Evans Horace Parlan Sax is all over the place, but seems like Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon and Jackie Mclean get the most play time

Looking for any recommendations for more current jazz bassists (and good albums with them) that had a similar style to Ray Brown or Paul Chambers (laid back, playing in the pocket, great melody).

Does anyone have the 70-75 Genesis vinyl box set? I have the cd/DVD box and never really liked the sound. Has anyone heard the vinyl editions and are they more representative of the originals?
