So I have a thread going about what speakers I bought. They sound pretty good, but could be better (room conditions, other gear in use). 2009 is going to start off with more audio gear, but I'm not sure where to start. I'll start this by listing the gear I'm currently using. MHDT Constantine+ (coax) -> Onkyo Integrated (pre-out) -> JVC Laboratory M-7050 Power Amp -> AV123 X-Statiks Cabling is just solid core silver from DAC to pre, starquad from pre to power. So as some of you already know I recently won an A-gon auction for a pair of Daber Audio Monitor 3 speakers. I had never heard of Daber Audio before the auction, and I must admit that the aesthetic of the speakers had a lot to do with me bidding on them. It was pretty easy to do the math and realise I had paid a less than what it actually cost to produce these speakers, so I had no real worries about getting a fair deal. OK, so I'm trying to build a stereo system from scratch for the gf. So far, I managed to find a pair of used Maggie MG10s, but I still need a dac and amp for an htpc as source. And probably a sub, but I'll save that for later. I'm trying to shoot for 100W to 250W rms, which is what the manual says I should do. Hi, Once a year or so I think about getting back into ESLs and even though the prices on vintage Quads seem to be on the increase I'd be interested in the thoughts of members here who have experience with or are interested in classic ESLs from Quad, ML (CLS, CLS II.), SoundLab, etc. I guess my preference would be for a rebuilt ESL-57 or 63 based on the ones I've heard, but I've always wanted to listen to some of its competitors. I got to hear a pair of these at a nearby hifi dealer today. Associated equipment: Esoteric CDP (looks like the SA-60, I forgot to take down the model) Anthem D6 (surround processor acting as preamp) Anthem Statement P2 power amp Thiel CS2.4 in standard finish, grills on. It took me about 15 minutes to get used to the presentation. I was sitting about 10 feet away in a 22x18 room, no real room treatments from what I saw. While I'm not typically a fan of single-driver speakers this caught my eye today. I've had really good experiences with Seas Excel series of drivers in the past so who knows this could actually be good.

I'm looking for a balanced crossover to run between my pre/amp. Need to be able to cut off from 80hz down and it must have 24db slope. I'm going to use it so i can take full advantage of my subs. Its got to be balanced and I prefer active but I'm not locked in on that if the best product in my price range is passive. I dont want to spend to much to start maybe 3-400 bucks. I found the Rane AC 22B but really have no clue whats out there or whats any good. Any suggestions would really help me out as I'm going in blind. Thanks.

So there's a local guy selling his Dynaco ST-70 for a pretty fair price ($300) and a pair of Magnepan MMG's ($300) also. I was curious if you guys have any input on the Dynaco amps.

This is my first post here. I am very happy with this system (for headphones - DT-880's,) however the speakers are starting to annoy me, while they are very detailed and lively they seem a bit forward and get tiring to my ears after a while in my setup. I really think I should have kept my last pair of speakers, Vandersteen 1C's. Now I'm seriously considering saving up for them again. This is a pic of my rig. The speakers are Omega Minuets that have modified by rewiring with thick solid-wire copper wiring inside, and the speaker wire is directly wired to the speakers. The source is 1212M running into the Luxman tube amp via silver interconnects.

My current desktop speaker setup is Benchmark DAC2 -> Pioneer Elite A-35R Int amp -> KEF LS50 (I also have the GS-1 on the desktop for headphones but haven't been using it with the speaker setup). I feel that there is still a bit lacking from the KEF LS50s so I swapped out the Marantz SR6005 receiver for the Pioneer A-35R. The sound was much warmer and more powerful. While I feel that setup was too bass heavy for me, I think that there is probably something lacking in my cheapie Pioneer Elite. I have been thinking about getting a Parasound A23 to replace the Pioneer Elite. I wonder if there will be too much volume going balanced out of the DAC2 since I am list…

Hello, I'm thinking about getting a new pair of speakers. I'm currently using a pair of Von Schweiker VR-1 monitors, but I'm moving into a larger space soon and am interested in getting some full size speakers.I'm currently using an April Music Aura Note, which is an excellent source and amp, but is just 50wpc. The room I'll be using them in is 15 x 14. I'd like to spend around $1000 or less, but that may be flexible. I don't have much experience with speakers as I've been a headphone guy in college. Any recommendations? Thanks

I have a couple of bookshelf speakers and a small active sub I'm no longer using in my TV system and I'd like to move them to the living room, which is currently wired with Blose courtesy of the house's previous owner. Anyway, I'm thinking a 50W integrated amp would do the trick (speakers are 8 ohm and 88dB sensitive) and I'd like to be cheap -- as it'd just be for occasional ambience or the kids and the main source will probably be an iPod. Do need a sub out. NAD? Cambridge? Arcam? Fire away. Used is fine.

Hey Speaker Kids: Don't I remember reading that the *L2 series of Quad speakers got worse reviews then their previous L series? Reason I ask is there are these demos for sale on Audiogon: http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrmoni&1206234899 I could put this on my desk next to my monitor, and power them off the other speaker outs on my 840A. But if my memory serves me, I'd be better off waiting for a regular 11L (or 12L if I want to go active).

I could potentially score a pair within this week, so I just wanted people who have heard/owned the 12L active monitors to speak out about their experiences. To be honest I don't expect optimal performances out of them in my room, because my room is not that great: somewhat thick dry-walls with wooden floors, and I would pretty much have to place them right up against the long wall due to space constraints. Will its been a year with the Harbeths. (and Manley amps) Truly one of the most enjoyable years listening to music I have had. I've probably bought more records since getting the Harbeths than any time prior. It took a couple months to really appreciate what they do, which is recreate recordings in a way few other speakers I have heard can. They (my system in general) walks the fine line of speed & resolution and warmth and musical about as good as I have heard. They play really big and transparent. I have a shitty insignia receiver that is only rated for 6 ohm speakers according to the manual but a pair of suspiciously cheap ribbon speakers came up on craigslist that I'm probably going to get. The problem is that they have 4 ohms impedance. If I listen at a modest volume will I risk blowing my receiver?
