I Can't Hear You, Speaker Man, I'm Listening to My Headphones

Finally got it to work. Of course I have to pull the amp out when I'm actually listening so the cord reaches the outlet, I'm using an ipod as source, and monster speaker cable, but it sounds amazing. I played the theme from shaft and sitting extreme (EXTREME) nearfield it sounded like I was actually sitting next to the hi-hat. The placement is awful obviously, that little green thing in the corner is my bed, which is touching the other side wall. So there is plenty of room for improvement. Eventually I will make stands or something so they can be placed at my desk, but they are just way too heavy (and so is the amp) to be supported by it.

Spent some time with these speakers in the same setup that I did the last time I wrote my initial impressions. This time around we listened to his digital rig mostly (CDS3 system). Again I'm left stunned how good speaker playback gets, and how petty and overpriced my headphone system looks. We listened to mostly rock, jazz, blues and classical. First up spun some "modern" Megadeth. Hidden Treasures is one of their 90s EPs that sounds damn good and didn't fall victim to obscene amounts of compression. Angry Again has a real wallop to the kick drum, and a nice bass line that sounded absolutely real if you closed your eyes. Electric guitar sounded so sweet as well. Male v…

My last thread here was about the Zus which I ended up buying used, the Soul Supreme, for a nice deal and I'm ready to move up the game.. Enter the Devore. I have been on a killing spree listening to speakers to find my next purchase and so far the only ones I liked were the Devore O/96 and Fleetwood Deville. So.. I'm curious if any of you guys heard the O/96 and O/baby ? The O/baby really is way cheaper than the O/96 that I loved but the store here doesn't carry them.. given that the O/baby has same new tweeter as their more expensive Reference and same woofer as the O/96 but smaller cabinet, maybe they could represent even a step up in sound or sim…

Brought home a pr. of these amps to try with the Harbeths to see how 25wpc 845 would do with them. They use 1 pr. of 6sn7 and a single 211/845 power tube each. (monoblocks) they are Chinese made. Anyone have any info on them? I have always been a big fan of 845 based amps, and after Axpona i have had the itch to try one. If these work out I might try something a little nicer and more powerful like the Cary 211 or Cayin 9088 in my system.

(large pic) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1168044/headphone%20rig%202014/Stands-10-30-14-2.png This morning I noticed a loose section of the gasket on my speaker. Where the jigsaw parts meet. I very lightly pressed it back on to the sticky backing, but am not sure if the back is something fragile or not. Anyone know how big a deal this is?

Any of you guys tried any of the old ADS with a SET amp? I decided to set up a listening room in my library this weekend. I'm planning my first full range driver DIY this spring but wanted something reasonable but dynamic in the meantime. I went to this local pawnshop known to have some vintage gear and stumbled across a pair of 10/10 ADS L570's. Picked em up for $150 and brought em home. Initially I was very skeptical as not knowing the sensitivity of this model, and knowing they aren't Rogers LS5A's. Thus far I am very pleasantly pleased. IMO unsurpassed bass extension and impact in a "bookshelf" speaker. Speed is quite nice. Transients IMO are spot on. I've ran pretty …

Any of you guys heard the Ascend Acoustics? I love small two ways like the 170SE. But I really like the Ascend 340SE ... MTM + high efficiency = big soundstage, big dynamics. The 340 is a lot like my old JM Labs I liked so well. Plus, I usually like soft dome tweeters > metal dome tweeters. Any input will be greatly appreciated .... I'm looking into a NAD 325BEE, and I'd like to know if it can output enough power to my speakers. My speakers are some vintage AKAI's with 8 ohm impedence and 100Wpeak. I see here: NAD Electronics :: C325BEE Stereo Integrated Amplifier that the NAD 325BEE is rated for 110W power, but only 50W continuously? What does this mean?

I don't know much on these units. Friend has them already, and he was asking me bout hooking em up. I just didn't want to just say "yes go for it" and find out I did something to mess up the receiver. Receiver: Sansui 9090DB Speakers: JBL Northridge E30 6-Inch Speakers From what I found on the net regarding the sansui, it's And for the speaker, I found I see the max recommended 125 W, and the 8 ohm nominal match up. But then what's the continuous 70watts for? Anything I should be concerned about if I were to help him hook the stuff up? If he wants to try bi-wiring. The speakers got 5 binding posts each, and the amp itself uses the spring clips. It…

Look what I found on craigslist recently. A few days ago, this system was up for sale and the asking price was $200. And then, yesterday night, I search for "turntable" and find that the listing was changed from $200 to FREE. I immediately sent email saying I'd take it, and a couple of minutes later, I receive a reply asking me to call that night. I talked to a lady for about half an hour. Apparently, the system was bought for her partner's mother around the mid-80s who has since passed away. The system has sat virtually unused for years, and she wants it out of the house. She said that someone else had responded and was willing to rip some vinyl as a trade f…

These are getting incredible reviews. Designed by the legendary Andrew Jones, they remind me of a downsized Tannoy, and are priced pretty damned well. Kind of dig their retro vibe too.

Ok, I'm currently looking at the Audioengine A5s since they're like a combo amp. I don't have a good place to put these speakers so I think I should start small, and get speaker/integrated amps etc after I'm done with these. The main problem is my room(s) don't have a good place for the speakers but that should be fine for now. Reks reccomended the A5s I think so I looked into it. Any ideas? Like should I go for it? or anything else you guys reccomend? I'm trying to stay away from hi-fi speaker systems atm. so anything combo should be good. Budget is maybe.. $300-600, really depends what it is that I'm getting. I need to patch up my headphone rig first anyways..

So... I've kinda inherited my late father-in-law's main speakers, some Cerwin Vegas VS-150's. Anyone have any info on these? Anyone have something like this before getting into audiophiledom? I know he'd gotten a great deal on 'em back in the day, but had hooked them up with cheap cable... as in, 10$ walmart lamp-cable > this cable. I hooked up my uber-pimptasticalicious .50cent 8ft (b/c we all know 8ft is the magic number, right?) heavy duty replacement cord (who needs extension cord when you can get REPLACEMENT cord) for power tools. With my free receiver (Motorola DCP-501... yes, its a cable box/receiver/DVD player all in one, but it's about 15 ft^3 (exaggeration, s…

As I've mentioned in another post, I'm trying to assemble an inexpensive computer rig for a friend. I know it's unlikely anyone has heard all the components, but anyone got any very positive or exclusionary experience with: NuForce Icon & NuForce S-1 vintage DAC (likely Sonic Frontiers TransDAC/Assemblage DAC1) & Audioengine A2s So USB DAC/amp & speakers versus DAC & active monitors. Leaning towards the latter (already have the DAC which would connect optically to his iMac), but both setups would in the end be ~$500. Unfortunately, buying both and returning the items of one set isn't possible in this case. Any words of advice?

Jonathan Valin: "Oh, and I’ve saved the best for last. Not only are the 30.7s the handsomest-looking large Maggies of all time (in their blue trim and snow-white panel covers), they are also among the best deals Maggie has ever offered. They cost $29,000 the pair (release slated for January). That’s not chump change, I grant you, but compared to the price of the six-figure speakers they so successfully compete against, it makes them, perhaps, the greatest bargain in ultra-high-end history. Any of you nerds use large driver open baffle speakers, or have opinions? Specifically looking at stuff like Hawthorne silver iris 15" coax, though field coils always intrigued too. I have never heard any, so the curiosity is purely about it being something different I think.

After neglecting my speakers for a while due to my recent electrostat headphone lust, I have put together my speaker rig again after receiving the DIY First Watt F5 amp. My main speakers are actively bi-amped, and I was looking for an extremely resolving amp for tweeter/midrange (Aurum Cantus G3 ribbon/Focal 7K2 midrange) beyond what my tube amps can provide. The F5 is fantabulously beautifully resolved in this range, I must say. BTW. Yes, that is the controversial Storm Audio Pandora DAC, currently used in "Master" mode, slaving my Lynx 2B spdif output from my quiet PC.

I'm shopping around for a pair of speaker stands to hold my Quad 11L and I've read conflicting opinions regarding which material is better, so I'm wondering what you guys think? Does it make a noticeable difference? For what it's worth, I'm looking for something around 30 inches, with a budget of 100-120$, so feel free to shoot recommendations.

So a friend I know from work has a spare (I think) pair of these, and his wife is wanting less clutter in their place. (I get that.) He knows I'm into gear and audio and whatnot, and we've been talking for years about stuff. He asked me if I'd be interested in this pair, and we talked about trading something, perhaps. I think he'd be willing to take my pair of Senn 580/600 grill/650 cable for this pair of speakers. I've read some mostly-positive reviews, but, well, "internet reviewers" and all. It seems these were out at least around the turn of the century. I was looking at just getting some stands for the Wharfedale Diamond II bookshelf speakers I got at a thrift shop…

With my headphone amp also being a decent preamp, I have some interest in active monitors for when speaker listening is an option. I know that there is a fairly strong Quad active fanbase around here. I came across the Tannoy Reveal line: Seems this series has a bunch of options, ranging from passive, to active, to active w/digital inputs, all basically differing in driver size (5, 6, 8"). Anyone heard any version of these?
