I Can't Hear You, Speaker Man, I'm Listening to My Headphones

  1. Started by shellylh,

Seriously interested in getting pair of ATC SCM20PSL (passive) loudspeakers to replace the Ascend Sierra 2 or KEF LS50. Right now I am using a NAD M32 integrated amp ( up to 180W into 8ohms I think) but since I have plenty of DAC/pres, I could sell that and get a different power amp --- maybe ATC P1/P2 or some other. Any reason I am not going to like it? I like the idea of having detailed and linear speakers. I thought about going for the active 20s but don't want to deal with having heavy speakers on stands unless it would really sound a lot better. Thoughts? http://atcloudspeakers.co.uk/professional/loudspeakers/scm20psl-pro/ https://vinta…

  2. Hello all, It's been a while and I hope all of you are doing fine I am looking for some advice. The speaker amp broke down again and it's time for something more decent. The problem is we want to have a minimum of 2 (preferably) digital inputs to attach our sources to. It seems quite hard to find. Does anyone have an idea on where to look? Thanx in advance!

so fucking happy right now even with the t amp at 15% they can fill up my office beautifully. was skeptical about the 1.8 watt decware amp but all reservations have been removed. yes i know the drivers are mounted sideways but theres a brace directly behind the driver and thats the only way the driver would go in without damage to driver posts. i did about 15% of the work in building them. rather happy with the outcome. the guys who built them did a beautiful job. pictures dont really shop the texture all that well.

  4. Hi I am fairly new to this and Was wondering if anyone could give some input on these products: -Audioengine P4 Bamboo Passive Speakers -Audioengine N22 Amp -Dayton Sub 8/10/12 Would these run well together? If there are any other better options please share. I'd appreciate all the info I can get. Drake

I’ve just finished building an EUVL F5X amp and now I’m after a decent set of speakers for $3500 which is pretty much my limit. The amp is rated around 50 watt stereo in 8 ohms. Short listed these after a couple of days searching and racking my brain... Reference 3A MM De Capo BE Proac Response 2 Usher Tiny Dancer BE 718 I owned a pair of Reference 3A royal master controls around 16 years ago, I loved them with a SET 300b amp at the time. Proac and Usher I have no experience, just read some favourable reviews. Maybe the Usher is a bit power hungry.. I dunno. Any help appreciated.

I am in the process of trying to simplify my life as much as possible. Additionally, I have found that, while I will spend many hours a week listening to headphones, it is not unusual to go weeks at a time without turning on the stereo. I live in a small apartment, with neighbors downstairs I don't want to disturb, and I also just don't like loud music anymore. And I am no fan of SE sound. All of these things have me thinking that getting rid of the 300B amps and the floor standing full range drivers might be a good thing. So, I am looking for advice on what to replace it with. I have a source/preamp I am happy with. So, this really comes down to power amp and spea…

I am reserving this space for impressions about Paradigm's new Special Edition speakers. I'll try to audition them in the next month or so...

Are these a good buy at 380 used? I'm actually trying to save up for the HD800 but speakers have been on my mind recently. I probably won't be able to preorder if I get these but that gives me time to see the reviews I guess. Since a lot of you have experience, could I get some information on how it will sound compared with the HD600/W5000? I'm running them out of flac/Musichall CD25, Northstar M192 and Gilmore Lite with DPS. thanks

Well, since my living situation will be changing soon, I thought now might be a good time to start contemplating a speaker rig. I'm not sure of the living arrangement yet, but anticipate a typical 2 bedroom apartment for at least a year. My intention would be to use the Opus 21 as source, and the Zana can serve as a preamp. I know very little about speakers/amplification, so given a modest budget of $1000 for speakers/amp, what would you all suggest I look into?

hi , can anyone recommend me an used excellent speaker for pc(my sound card has xlr balance, rca analog,...)? so far i only know the quad 12l active is good for pc(for the qual 12l2 , i think it won't let me use with pc). can anyone recommend me some speakers which are above level of quad 12l active? my budget for speaker pc will be around 1.5k for a used one thanks

  12. Started by veloaudio,

I'm hoping to pick up a pair of A5s soon but due to my desk arrangement I can only handle stands with about a 4 inch rise max. I just noticed these stands on the Audioengine site. Audioengine DS1 Anyone try them out or something similar? I know ideally I should get the speakers up higher but angled like this may be my best option.

I'm using a Trends TA-10.1 right now and to me it's kind of bright and metallic without the Opera preamp in front of it. Not a great match for either my speakers or my Sigmas. I'm looking for an amp with balanced sound (can be on the warm side) that's preferably somewhat small and not too expensive, but if it's small and awesome I can swing a little more for it. But not CIAudio D-100 more (if only).

The KEF Eggs are on sale for $299 for the month of July and I am curious how they might sound in my office at work. Has anyone heard them? https://www.kefdirect.com/review/product/list/id/1350/category/241/

My sister wants me to help her with ideas for a simple system under $500 or close. She will use her Ipod. I think she also has an airport express? Here is what she said: i want something that looks good (minimal design) and, of course, sounds good and can connect to my ipod. i don't really have a home system - just a small bookshelf stereo that i might get rid of. She is definitely not an audiophile. Any thoughts appreciated.

Ok so I have finally scored the DNA 1 rev A of Audiogon and partnered with my Alon 1s it sounds great. I have been using the pre outs from the Berendsen IPA-80 as well as an Luminous Audio passive volume control partnered with a Moth Audio switchbox. I am starting to set my sites on a preamp and have a few candidates: Bent Audio TAP (a bit out of range atm but still obtainable) Placette Audio passive preamp from what I have read may be tops in the transparency dept in this price range McCormacj Audio RLD preamp, these show up used for $700ish on Agon and Steve McCormack offers upgrades to them. There are three levels of upgrades 700/1100/1400, I'd probably go gusto…

  17. A thread for discussing the "Unisound Golden Series Home Theater AU265-R Speakers." A number of head-casers got these on sale @ ThingFling, and a number more were frustrated when they tried to order them from the same and got an error. I finally got mine today, after FedEx utterly fucked things up failed at delivering them three times in a row. It was a bleeding odyssey for me to get them. The FedEx ground location is on the airport industrial park off Westover AFB in Chicopee, MA (an armpit if there ever was one). The drive ended up taking three times as long as it should have as I tooled around looking for an unmarked street. I haven't so much as taken the sp…

Folks, Does anyone have suggestions for the best sounding speakers I could get up to about $1500 new or slightly used? Currently have Boston Acoustics VR2 Looking for a definite step up in SQ, neutral and transparent, but not overly bright. Thanks Pete

I have a pair of QUAD 12L Pro Active speakers on some rather chunky and expensive stands that have sat completely unused since I sold my Balanced Home 3 months ago, which was also serving as a digital preamp. I have nothing to drive them with, and am not really too excited to purchase something, but if I did, it would need to be a DAC/Preamp w/volume control all in one. Balanced outputs would be great, but not important. So, my question is, what can I buy to give them a nice signal, or should I just get rid of them alltogether? Problem is, they are only worth abut $500 resale, and these biamped active speakers sound thousands of dollars better than that... Edit: …

  20. I don't think there is a general "I just heard these cool/sucky speakers" thread so I figure I can start one. I was thinking about consolidating and maybe getting my system down to two pairs: a nearfield monitors for late night listening and full range speaks for all out assault. So that is why I have being annoying a lot of hi-end sales people nowdays Yesterday I went to a few shops in NYC to listen to some stuff. First was a system with Devore Gibbons 9 with Shindo and Lab47 gear behind them. I did not like what I heard unfortunately. Dry and grainy, with shallow bass and strange coloration. I listened for an hour with a lot of different music. Listened to L…

Sold off my ol' Paradigm MilleniaOneCT systems and Maggie .7's for some nice fat 20.7's and the mini maggies on my desktop. Driving the kit with ... MacBook Pro -> McIntosh D100 -> MC252 -> 20.7 +-> PrimaLuna ProLogue Integrated -> mini maggies Sounds amazing! Thinking of upgrading my WA7/tp for their DiaLogue as a dedicated HP amp.

About six months ago I got swept up in the Insignia decent speaker for cheap craze and purchased a pair really cheap at Worst Buys with the intention of trying my hand at the Danny Richie Mods. My plan was to replace the mediocre speaker pair in my office with some nice looking and killer sounding moded speakers..........rrriiiiiight! http://www.gr-research.com/insignia.shtm Bottom line, they sound awful, worse than stock. I checked every resistor connection, inductor, and how I ran the connections. Out of desperation I sent the crossovers to Danny who hooked them up and ran a sweep. He found no problems, but they sound awful. I have fifteen hours of painful bur…

Hopefully this belongs in the speaker forum. Finally arrived after a long ordeal with Fedex: It looks great with the rest of the family: Ah, all that black and blue looks snazzy! Silver dynahi sticks out like a sore thumb. No listening impressions, because of course I have no speaker wire. :'( Still, it is a substantial unit, quite heavy. It definitely turns on, which is a plus. The volume control makes a fun clicking noise. So in other words its already worth the asking price, sound be damned.

Ok, I'm not an audiophile, won't pretend to be either. My main interest is computing but the obsession tends to spread like a virus from high end computers, to desks, chairs, and audio. Many years back, when I wanted a decent computer sound system, I ended up with the reasonable $400 VideoLogic Sirocco Crossfires. These served me well and I've never really had any major complaints with the actual sound, but a few years into them I stopped using the rear speakers and subwoofer all together as I found my needs and tastes changing (the rears are no longer connected, the sub is, but the control for it is turned 95% of the way down). Then somewhere along the line, a great d…
