Hi All, I teach high school science, and our department has a bit of money to spend. Our school is very dependent on technology for PowerPoint and other software for curriculum, so any problems with our desktops or LCD projectors is a BIG hassle. I suggested that we invest in a laptop and projector to use exclusively as a roving backup for teachers in our department. I am only looking for absolute reliability since every new laptop can run Powerpoint and any other education software one can dream of for lecture purposes. Dad's in Tulsa with a new Mac and I'm in Nashville. Is there a way I can troubleshoot/control his desktop from here without buying software? Really need to figure this out quick.

Is there any way I can remote view my dad's computer desktop? I'm in Nashville, he's in Tulsa. Both are cable modems and OSX. He's not computer literate so everytime I try to troubleshoot he gets confuses as to what's the desktop vs. whatever. If I could see and possibly control it that would help a bunch. Hopefully something free as opposed to buying another piece of software.

Hopefully some of you more experienced desktop people have a solution for this problem. We have a nearly two year old Intel I7 Ivy Bridge desktop computer. It has 16G of ram, 180 GB SSD HD and a 1 T external HD with the cpu running slightly overclocked. Core speed is 4398 MHz, Multiplier X 44, Bus speed is 99.98MHz. For the past six months while gaming and often times doing nothing taxing to the cpu, we have experienced the blue screen crash with the "windows detected hardware error". Hi all, I have recently been optimizing my laptop for better performance. At the onset, I reinstalled Windows (Vista Business 32bit) sans bloatware using two partitions, planning to put the OS and programs on the C:/ partition and all data on the D:/ partition. I noticed that I only had the option for giving the C:/ partition 60% of my 160GB drive. I figured this must have been necessary, but this turned out to be far from the case. The partition is not even half full, and I don't plan to install too many new programs in the future, maybe 5-10GB more at the most, so I don't need 40GB of free space. Is it possible to rip HDCDs using iTunes such that you get the extra preciouss bitses? I understand that you can rip it as a regular CD, but HDCD is 20-bit, right? If iTunes can't do it, is there a way to rip HDCDs while preserving the "HD" portion? EDIT: Assume a Mac, but I also have a PC.

I would like to rip my parents' CD collection and "share" mine with them. They already have a multi-room setup, so I wouldn't need to put wireless speakers, etc. all over. I've always been a loyal Firefox fan, but I've decided to give Safari 4 Beta a chance because it's supposed to be super-fast and better integrated in OS X than Firefox. So far, it looks great and I notice a slight improvement in speed, but there's one thing that's bothering me quite a bit: is it possible to activate autoscrolling (or drag scrolling) like in Firefox? By drag scrolling, I mean clicking the middle button on the mouse and just dragging the mouse around to scroll. That's one essential option for me. Thanks!

Hi Everyone, Alright, I have two HDD's in raid and would like to figure out how to get my fucking computer to allow me to access them sometime this century. Their set up in the raid utility and it says both HDD's are functional. I have a P4 2.4Ghz, asus P4P800-E Deluxe Mobo which I updated the bios (1010-001) this morning with no issues. I don't know where to go from here, any help is appreciated.

I'm looking for ideas for a PC (non-Mac) laptop that can go to school daily, can do homework that is online-based (meaning Google docs, etc.), and can be a decent gaming machine for Steam-based games. It doesn't really need an optical drive and it should be light enough to carry daily. Probably 14.6-17" screen. The budget needs to be reasonable, but I don't want to be too limiting so I can get a good idea of the options. Thanks in advance for any input and specific models you can recommend.

Horrible as their sometimes use may be, after reading this pretty critical article I kinda want to try out "Second Brain" apps/services. Anyone try and have an opinion of Notion, Obsidian, Mem, or other? I'll likely dive in all three, but thought I'd use the collective first. I've gone years using some older software like DEVONthink, The Brain, and even Yojimbo, but generally they've been slow to move to the cloud, so I've dropped all along the way for more primitive organization.

Hey gang- Having some really bad video issues. I've had this BFG 8800GT for a while now, and its been great. Last week I started having problems: yellow lines across the screen, random swirly blue dots showing up in any picture, and several minutes after these errors begin, my screen starts going black for several seconds, then flick back to normal for a second or two, then black, and so on back and forth, basically making it impossible to do anything with my computer. I haven't run any games in a while, this just happens when I'm browsing the internet. My quick resolution is to shut down the computer for a couple of minutes, then turn it back on. I have a really old 1.1ghz computer with 512mb of really old slow ram. I'm getting irked at my computers sluggish speeds when oppening web browsers and files and even transfering things to my portable player. I don't however have the resources to get a whole new computer. I can get a stick of 512mb of ram thats clocked at 633mhz for 39.99 at circuit city. I'm considering the idea of building a very small size RAID box using 2.5" SSD drives, so it probably wouldn't need a fan nor a built-in PS. I'd fit 4 drives for a RAID-1 configuration. Since it'd be in a Mac computer, it's not necessary the box has built-in RAID firmware and it could be either USB-C 3.1 or Thunderbolt for faster performance. So I've been using the new Screen Time feature in iOS12 to lock the kids' iPads and phones overnight to remove temptation and alleviate bedtime arguments. Was working well. Until I notice today that a couple of notable apps (Clash of Clans, Netflix) are no longer blocked on Alec's devices even when Screen Time is active. Hmm, that seems ... mysteriously convenient. I reset everything (including the master passcode) on his stuff and on my phone, which is the main controller. No change.
