  1. There is approximately a negative 43.2% chance that Shelly would have eaten at any of the restaurants I went to in Vietnam. And that is probably best for everyone.

  2. I'd surely like to try the phone out of my BHSE, bypassing the internal amplification to see what this transducer is all about. Having talked to Axel Grell about it, it surely convinced me though that it wasn't just a facelifted orpheus. We can't say if it was worth the extra cost of manufacturing but they certainly seem to have spent quite a bit of effort making an electrode and diaphragm system with proper rigidity and self-damping and I don't believe Stax could have dreamed of spending as much money on a phone design. It looks pretty neat also imo. On the other hand, I find the amp with motorized knobs and all extremely gaudy and, having the chief designer say it was to give a sense of "less is more" made me spit my coffee. If, with a 8 DAC chips, an amp and all these motors in there, he think of it as an expression of "less is more", I can't imagine what this thing would contain if it was an "more is more" effort :-).

  5. First shipping as of today. US/Canda + some others. Canda is going direct. US going by Jay.(people will receive pm with tracking) Another bach tomorrow. Then only a few will have to wait until late next week, where the remainder of the caps arrives. some packages may look a bit crusty, but every single cap has been wrapped in plastic bubbles, then the batch has been wrapped in bigger plastic bubbles (Mouser, pink)

  6. you can be sure that the amp inside the headphones is a version of the hev70. that is, mosfet current source, mosfet driver. likely gain of 5 to 10. gain will have to be fixed because no feedback on the cable. and no room for output capacitors so the power supply is likely +/-300v or so because anything more would be very unsafe. (like +600 and 0) could i drive this headphone with a better front end, you bet. 8 tubes, how can you possibly use 8 tubes unless 4 of them are for the dac.

  15. That would indeed be my concern. That's why I have MSB stuff as they have been around for a long time and do care about the older tech.

  16. It said that the driving Mosfets were inside the cups. Then there is no way that these haedphones can be driven by other amplifiers without serious modifications.

  19. Forget all this mixing of different brand name rubbish. Get the new Orpheus. A complete system, and it will break your wallet just as much if not more than what you're planning/contemplating now. One brand synergy for the win. You know you want to........

  21. It is most certainly a bulging battery. I wouldn't power on the machine anymore or plug in the laptop until it is fixed. Is there an Apple store around there? This happened to Tim's laptop a few months ago. It was 4 years old and Apple wouldn't replace the battery but they (for free) took out the battery and now it can be used without a battery (it has to be plugged in). I also had the option to have it replaced fro $129 I believe. Since I didn't use the laptop, I decided to just have it removed. If you fix it yourself, I would be very careful not to damage the battery. There is a reason it is bulging.

  28. At the very least, I'd get someone to set up a double blind test so I could be sure the thing sounds at least different, if not better, than something cheaper. And Occam's Razor suggests to me that you just don't like the 009's.

  32. I say go for it if it makes you happy. There's no end to the debate about relative value -- only you can decide what's worth it to you. Also kind of like the idea of a megabucks DAC in a headphone rig.

  33. Finished steak. I prefer the reverse sear slow smoke method over sous vide for steaks. While it's a little more tender, it lacks the smokey flavor I love. Next I'm trying chicken breasts. Yeah, they're the Lipavi racks I bought from Amazon.

  35. OK, my chassis is finished. (My homage to Steampunk.) Just DON'T remind me how long this has taken! A few minor tweeks, including tightening the legs up, then I can start soldering. Another 6 months maybe?? No point rushing these things, and, to be fair, I'm only after that longest build prize. @‌dmkbox No, this is not a kit! More pics at http://cubeupload.com/codes/32d8a5
