I didn't play with any modes on the Golf so maybe there were more fun ones and it was a DCC car so I guess I could/should have set that to sport. That said I didn't enjoy it and this purchase is about that. The STI Limited interior was at least as nice as the golf in my opinion. Which either means it's pretty nice or I don't give a shit about interiors. The point about boy racers is perfectly valid but again I can't give a fuck at this stage as I want the car that 16 year old me wanted, hence the boy racers....2 points

If you like the STI definitely try the base WRX too. The steering and suspension might be a bit weaker but the base WRX arguably has the better engine. The torque curve is huge and flat and comes on at about 2.5k vs 3.5k on the STI. I friggin love the WRX engine. Also, I don't know if you get a chance to do this on the test drive, but my favorite thing to do is to time my boost to come on right at the apex and let that AWD claw me out. Also:2 points

Sweet! If the looks of the STI work for you (the wing tends to be the challenge for many), I think it's a great choice. You can hurt some feelings with one on the twisties. HS2 points

I am actually working on a better way to get all your knob needs met - www.knobsly.com. Prices are still tentative for the custom part and I have bunch of knobs that need to get photographed and put up there. But it's a start2 points

Only change to PSU was reducing +250V to +150V. For amplifier I changed batteries from 740V to 640V. Also the 68V grid voltage was reduced to 33V, but that is taken care by the resistor on the small board with two 2sc3840. Maybe one should build a modified T2 with lsk389 for input and EML 20B-V4 for output....2 points

Get a WRX and an ST, that way you can have one for Rallycross and one for Autocross. **BRENT**1 point

I got a Synology 1815+. It'll supposedly do decent transcoding but since I'll mostly be using it as a fileserver/Crashplan box, I should be fine. I wrote zeros to the drives over the weekend before formatting and am rsyncing files over to it now. Will report back later.1 point

Coming from a guy that modifies his vehicles, the one thing I've learned is it is worth going with the higher end model than going with the lesser version (especially if brake and suspension upgrades and power and related technology are meaningful vs some sort of glamor package). This is in the context of someone that's looking to put the goodies to work. You end up nickel and diming yourself well past what you would have paid and often can void a warranty doing it otherwise. Further, the OEM upgrades have more engineering to them than what is done aftermarket more often than not. That's been my experience... HS1 point

I think it's because of your display of the Emperor II on your web site ... if you had used the ES-175 it would never have happend ;o)1 point

I received an email recently from a "vendor" whose products I had purchased from Mouser. They were aware of the item and the quantity. While the from and return to email addresses all appear sort of legit (it is a 3rd party company that manufacturers subcontract to for tech support), it came to an email of mine that while publicly available and tied to my name, has never been used at Mouser. My guess is Mouser sold a bunch of data.1 point

I was supposed to be on leave today so I decided to take 3 hours off in the middle of the day and go and drive a STI and Golf R. The STI went first and was awesome, very fast steering though the manual is a bit stiff compared to the focus ST and the ride seemed pretty good to me (feels like you're in a racecar). I did not get to push the car on the drive in any real sense (literally stuck behind a 70 year old in a Prius). Rear leg room was great and I could even sit behind myself. The Golf R DSG/DCC (I drove a CPO 2016 fully loaded car from VW Corporate down the road) was very refined but for me after the STI seemed boring. Didn't help that my salesman was 60 or so and didn't know a "driving road" from a corporate park with stop signs and lights everywhere.1 point

You have to be pretty determined to eavesdrop on emails in transit - Snowden blew the whistle on government-sponsored programmes to do this, but it is hard to do so. With Mouser, transactions are done via https, where public-key encryption is used to secure sensitive data. The likely routes are: 1. A member of staff at Mouser selling information 2. A hack of Mouser's computer system 3. A trojan on the local machine sending sensitive information to hackers 4. An unsecured port on the local machine that is open. 3 is unlikely because up to date virus software - which we all have, right? Port security can be checked by going to https://www.grc.com/intro.htm and running shields up to probe to first 1024 ports.1 point

I have pretty much made up my mind that I am going to suck it up and go with the RS if I can still modify orders as of tomorrow and they still have the car. I will be one of the idiots that overpaid. Oh well. Tried to go to the local VW dealer to drive a R but they had sold it yesterday and were not even interested in my business (didn't even offer to order one or try to sell me a GTI) so I just left.1 point

Brent, Ouch man, sucks about the crash but glad to hear that everyone is mostly ok. Do your kid a favor and set the 305 to pause when stopped. https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?9354-Timer-auto-pause-when-stopped1 point

I hear you can do a bit with a Forester XT if you lower it, get wheels, exhaust, replace the steering rack with the WRX or STI one, etc. I saw some pictures of a white one once that was pretty sweet, but I think the owner forgot he had it and it's just sitting in a garage somewhere. **BRENT**1 point

Just finished another ribeye similarly cooked at 129F but for 3 hours pan seared with butter and herbs over medium heat. Not as crispy of a crust as it would have been had I used much higher heat but man this was the best steak I've ever had. Just the right balance of flavor, doneness, warmth, chewiness and tenderness. I'd say the 'Chacho' at the Columbia restaurant has been dethroned as my favorite steak. No pictures of this one unfortunately. Need to give my kidneys a little break over the next few days as I've been ingesting large quantities of meat but will be back in a couple of weeks.1 point
