  3. An interesting live performance by Chick Corea The last few Corea's outputs made me think of those Picasso's words "As a child I painted like Michelangelo, but it took me all life to draw like a child". Corea always played virtuoso piano, and has evolved through many styles, but it's lately when he, in my opinion, is playing wonderful simple music.

  6. Whomever made that chart has not been drinking the same whiskey I have. Bourbon is the only booze I've consumed that made me abusive toward others. 15 or so years ago a female friend of mine who is a lesbian didn't believe me. She fed me a number of Wild Turkey drinks that weekend and apparently at some point I began belligerently pontificating about "bull dykes." That following Sunday she said "yeah, no more bourbon for you ...ever." This is a rule I have stuck to since then. Scotch, OTOH, is fine. I just become a louder, more emphatic version of myself. I'd still drink it upon occasion, by my digestive system rebells at anything other than the smallest sip. Them's the breaks.

  7. I definitely agree with you regarding his work with Miles, and yes, most of his Return to Forever work, but Romantic Warrior is a standout. (The first three tracks are from that album. The other two are from Al Di Meola albums.) And I will admit to not being familiar with his entire catalog, but lyrical melodicism ( ) is top notch when it's there.

  11. I think I haven't listened to Children's Songs, so I'll check it, thanks for the recommendation, Dusty. I wasn't a Corea's fan until a couple of years ago. I've always appreciated his virtuosity and his harmonic proveness, he's a beast of unpredictability. At times I could hear what you mention, that melodic lyricism, but on albums like "Now he sings, now he sobs" and his stuff with Return to Forever and Miles, I found some sort of lack of focus which made me feel more like he was showing off than making enjoyable music. It's difficult to explain, however now that I've learnt some music theory and my listening skills have evolved, I can enjoy him a lot more. Maybe it's not as much his evolution as a player as mine as a listener

  17. I haven't had enough time to spend on this but I did throw on the EP-007 pads and the results weren't great. The sound was improved over all, better bass and the rough treble smoothed out but the imaging is still crap. Then I got a crazy idea, what about turning these into pretty much large SR-X's....? Well I had some ATH-2002 pads (I think, had them for well over a decade) and they are completely flat and pretty thin. Now this means the pads will give zero aide for the imaging but it has done wonders for the rough top end and made the bass a bit too flat. Still an interesting experiment and I'll keep them like this for a while as they are quite comfy with these pads.

  18. Dinner last night at the Buenos Aries Grill. Turns out to be Seattle Restaurant Week, so the giant pile of meat I was planning to order had accompaniments for less money than normal. Result!

  20. I was on the Isle of Wight last week. Just off the South coast of England. I took this photo (among others). This was the site of the 1970 rock festival - the largest ever with 700,000 audience. Hendrix headlined, which attracted a who's who of rock legends (Baez, Dylan, Cohen, The Who, Miles Davis, ELP, Free, etc etc) The second photo is what it looked like from the same place in 1970
