  1. Colin made food. I ate his food. Supposedly it is called "buldak", and also referred to as "Fire Chicken." Soooo much better than whatever grawk posted above. https://www.maangchi.com/recipe/buldak

  3. Not sure if anyone would have any interest, outside of maybe Steve and his apprentice, but the new neighbors brought over a blueberry pie and full photo documentation of the build of the house. What was sold as and listed for taxes as a 1972 home with renovations, would appear to be a near complete tear down and new build. Note the sweet green fridge in many of the pictures and the worker riding the chimney like a bull before it collapsed through the floor into the basement. They tell us the chimney was going to be the only thing kept, until that. House Build

  4. Yesterday was a good day despite too much work stuff nagging. Managed to blow off some steam driving my car, other's Germanic offerings and then hit a pool shindig for college like antics...feeling it a bit this morning...LOL Anyhoo, I managed to find a 2012 Carrera with a stick not too far off. 40 some odd thousand on the odometer. Not much luck locating a Carrera S like I was hoping to anywhere reputable so I took what I could get. The young salesman and I went for a spin. The manager I had spoken with departed as I arrived, so me and my young victim got in it as much as the car was willing to part with. Very much a naturally aspirated power delivery from a 3.4L six cylinder and, hopefully without insulting anyone, it was a bit dull for me. It felt slow. Handled fine...pretty nicely, but just didn't move me. Manager gets back and walks up to me....big man. Shakes my hand and asks if that's my Demon in the lot...yes, sir. Tells me he just bought a Challenger Hellcat and loves it. Compliments the Demon and tells me, this is your playground. Make yourself at home and tell me if my team doesn't take good care of you. Thank you... So out come the keys to a 2018 Cayman GTS that's sitting there when I pull up in the 911. I hadn't considered one, but that's what this journey is about so off we go.... This is MUCH better. Lovely engine sounds in the cabin...the mid-engined turbocharged four banger sounds much better than I would have thought. I'm not accustomed to four cylinders and did not expect so much from a 2.5L motor. The car handled really nicely....very much closer to what I'm searching for, I think. Lots of good feedback, the option to dial it into S mode and S Plus mode with a dial on the steering wheel makes it peppier. I have always pictured in my mind's eye the 911 as THE Porsche...it being so iconic and a good bit of what I've seen and loved over the years. This Cayman has me thinking... HS

  5. MD, Appreciate all the input. I've had my nose buried deep in going straight a long while. I'd occasionally read MotorTrend article on a Porsche, Ferrari, BMW, etc... but not that much. I also read a lot about fast SUV's as I've grown fond of something with some height and size for my daily. Something has been missing, though, and I think it's rowing the gears. Fast but friendly...for example the sport buckets in the Carrera T are great for a track car but not one for going out for a spin on the weekend, etc... So no DCT for this camper...yet. I've been reading and the new motor and the M2's Competition designation came in 2019. It's the motor and carbon fibre cross brace from the M4 amongst some other bits. The M2 pictured here and the only one I've driven is a 2018. Interestingly, no change in times to speak of between the two motors despite a not insubstantial increase in power. Also, despite the size difference between the M4 and the M2, the weights and times don't reflect it so much. Also, the M2 is taller...go figure. Driving the 911's did me wrong in the head...really nice. Would like to see if I can find a 2008 - 2012 for a test drive.... HS

  6. Now time for something super rare... a balanced SRM-1 Mk2 PP. I didn't think any of these existed as there was the ATR version for studio use which had a stepped attenuator and balanced inputs but in almost 20 years of searching...none have turned up. Then I came across this one last year in Japan in pretty rough shape with tape all over it. I naturally over payed as usual but then again, how often does one find something like this: So years ago I did this and nice to see Stax did the exact same mod as me. Remove the 100R resistor to ground on the other side of the fet and put two resistors off the board in its place. The amp also arrived with one channel dead, shorted transistors and almost open resistors in the front end. Now for the money shot... This is clearly stock from Stax as all the screws match what they used at the time but one odd thing is that the markings are actually engraved into the back and not simply silk screened.

  8. Oh, I would never advise anyone to get an Audi that was not going to have a new, CPO, or some other extensive warranty. I've Loved Audi for a long time, but one bad experience and it's been determined that the family's anxiety is too high to risk being in an Audi without a warranty. I don't see myself looking at really you needing an Audi, but an RS4 Avant has been one of my dream cars.

  9. As much as I love the look of the Audi's, and pretty spectacular transmissions, I'm not big on the electronics' reliability. No used Audis for this camper. HS

  10. Yeah, the reason Porsche doesn't put bigger engines in the Cayman is it would eat the 911 for breakfast.

  14. Love it, Jeff. That was quite the upgrade from the previous build shown in your pics above. Clicking through the old pics, the teardown/rebuild, and then seeing the pics of the new place, I'm really happy for you guys. I was just thinking I haven't had a biscuit in a week or so; perhaps that helped?

  20. In all fairness, I was introduced to them several years ago by a certain British Facebook friend, but they’re so great, I don’t even have a favourite song by them. “Again” got played on repeat for a while there, so it’s probably closest, but I like all their long songs, “Lights”, “Controlling Crowds”, etc. And the lyrics to “Fuck U” still resonate in today’s American political climate.

  21. 17-40L at 17mm, F/5, 1/60, ISO 100. 17-40L at 19mm, F/6.3, 1/180, ISO 50. Pure silliness at this point. I attatched my Nikon 75-150mm F/3.5 E to my IR-modified 5D and did a "macro" shot of a plant growing in my front yard. The lens was wide open and I shot in aperture priority mode (as one does with fully manual lenses most of the time.) I then processed the image in Photoshop ...twice. The first time I did some basic contrast adjustments. The second time I converted the photo to black & white using a high contrast filter then duotoned it with a quad tone. Then I did some further levels work (I can't really call it "correction" at this point.) Finally, I combined the two images at about a 25/75 ratio. Why? I dunno, it's just how the work flow went.

  25. Now for something pretty rare... the ESP900... This is the closed back version of the ESP950 made for medical use such as MRI's etc. Not much is known about these and only a few sets have ever surfaced. I'll do a more indepth post about these when I modify them and dig into them a bit. Stock...well...they don't sound good. The earpads are unique to these so when you press them to the head...the sound gets better but it is no 4070...that's for sure.

  26. Are you sure about that Birgir? Last time I heard, a guy name Ralph or Rafe said you need at least a couple of days for "Electron Alignment" , I suggest swimming across the Arctic ocean for 3 days as a final measure as well.

  27. The previous post was supposed to be longer, but I'm having some issue posting multiple images from Flickr to HC. Yes, the irony of that statement is not lost on me. The stream at the edge of my property. I spent considerable time framing this shot. 35mm F/2 at F/8, 1/60, ISO200. It's just a bunch of trees. Converted to black & white in Photoshop using a high contrast blue filter, then duotoned. I also tweaked the curves a bit and then cropped it to 5:4 (which has been my favorite aspect ratio for a decade now.) The vignetting is organic, and not done by a PS plugin. It's an artifact of how the EF 50mm F/1.4 USM transmits IR. F/8, 1/100 ISO 160. 17-40L at 17mm, F/7.1, 1/100, ISO50. 17-40L at 19mm, F/6.3, 1/80, ISO50. Moar later.

  28. This has been a killer of a week for me so I'm late with the impressions. Then all of sudden we had a holiday today so I finally have some free time. I'm too lazy to find my camera so I'll take some pics later. First off, this is set nr.4 so I very much view it as a "work in progress" but...they are pretty awesome. From the first impressions and until now they keep reminding me of the SR-007. Clearly power hogs (I measured the system with stock cable at 160pf) too and a bit dark sounding. Now in my book this is a welcome reprise from all the bright models out there now. Doesn't mean the treble is subdued or anything like that, it is just not as apparent as with the L700 or 009's for instance. This also gives it a fuller sound and well...that bass. The cups are ported so the bass could have been compromised due to that but not so here, it's deep, tight and tuneful. It doesn't match a closed SR-007 but I frankly don't mind that...I can always grab my 007's if I want to listen to them. These are a bit more tuneful with more presence higher up. One of the first tracks I tried on them is the one which 009, 009S and 009BK all fail miserably at, but no issues here. They replicate the snare drum perfectly and same goes for everything else I've thrown at them. The midrange is perfectly fine and really showcases the difference in mastering on some tracks. The soundstage is just about perfect, follows what the tracks should sound like and doesn't pull a HE90 on us. Not quite up to the layering of the 007's but then again...that is the gold standard. Overall they are very neutral and do what any transducer should do, get out of the way. For me the biggest compliment to any headphones is me willing to listen to them as well, I have a lot of headphones at hand. I've used these almost exclusively since I got them, only swapping out to do comparisons. Now for fit and finish, I have no complaints. The headband is very sturdy with nice spring steel for the main span and they fit my head nicely. A bit snug but then again, I have a melon for a head. I did bend the arc a bit and now I can use them for hours at a time. The housing is attached to the earcups with a single M4 bolt and I did experience some rubbing there. This joint wasn't really supposed to move but for my use, they fit better that way so I place a nylon washer between the two parts and that has fixed this. I've already relayed this to Aumkar who should be arriving back home soon. The only major issue I've had is with the cable or rather one of the connectors. One channel started to drop out and after some troubleshooting this was traced to the mini XLR plug. I bought some new ones and made a quick replacement cable this morning and now it works perfectly. To keep the cost down the mini XLR does work for this but yeah... I'd like something better but given the cost constraints I get why they use it. Same for the cable, getting anything which works for this is difficult and costly. The cable is still better than what Hifiman are using so yeah... I'm not too worried about that. So over all, I'm very, very impressed and I will be working with Aumkar to see if we can't improve on these small issues.
