  2. That's a great article, and great snippet, except one thing that I simply cannot abide: and the “Tesla in space” thing was cringey. Nope. Nuh-uh. Not even a little. The Tesla in space was the best thing I ever saw. The whole Falcon Heavy launch that day, with the synchronised side-booster touchdown, the red sports car floating above the earth...... easily the most giddy-excited I've ever been about anything STEM, ever.

  3. Got the first stage of my next project working, an amp that started out as a Menace clone and has changed a bit over time. 6SN7 input stage, CCS with a 21st Century Maida circuit as the B+ supply.

  4. The Chair (Netflix) - good to see Sandra Oh in something after Killing Eve. An enjoyable watch, even if it is pretty predictable, feeling like I've seen these characters before, just in a different context or something. Good supporting cast, including Bob Balaban & Holland Taylor, among others, to round out the ensemble. A very nice, eclectic soundtrack is notable. Only six eps, so...

  5. This quote had me laughing this morning… Bezos is like your mum’s leathery third boyfriend after her divorce, while Musk is your maths tutor who won the Powerball lottery. Zero overlap. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/aug/29/the-smartest-person-in-any-room-anywhere-in-defence-of-elon-musk-by-douglas-coupland

  8. I grew up when they were still considered less lean than chicken, and it was only after you suggested it, that I researched it and found out that they've been breeding pigs to be more lean, and it is, indeed, "the other white meat", and -- especially the tenderloin and the chops, maybe less so the ham -- is quite lean! So I will be partaking of the tenderloin and the chops frequently...but chicken thighs are still the best. And one of these days -- maybe when I get below 188 -- I'll splurge on a hamsteak.

  9. So glad you enjoyed it! Something about pork that works so well with just the sauces...

  11. Since I pay for the Bozos Space Fund, I have access to AMZN Prime Video and sometimes avail myself of it. I watched a documentary on the late Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones a few nights ago. Prime Video's suggestion algorithm is hilarious, especially compared to the "we track your every move" nature of YouTube and Google. It suggested season 4 of The Grand Tour, which is the, ahem, spiritual successor to Top Gear. In spite of the fact that I find Jeremy Clarkson to be one of the most loathsome people in the history of humans (or things that are loathsome) I watched the first episode. It's quite well produced as one would expect. Apparently Prime has the first for seasons.

  12. I've heard good things. But a lot of colleagues have watched it and say it paints a hauntingly accurate picture of academia. I get enough of that shit on a day-to-day basis for it to bleed into my entertainment as well!

  14. It made for a very good pour-over. I should have ground a little finer, but I’ll know for next time. Breezy and bright and tangy but definitely with some distinct berry.

  17. When I was a kid we didn't have Spam, I'm not very sure it's available here yet, however we had a canned equivalent to ham that is Magro de Cerdo Apis The can has evolved with the years but the meat inside has been having a consistent good quality. It was rather expensive for our economy in those days, so it was more a treat on occasion than a daily food. I like having a can in the pantry.

  18. As for the vinegar thing...as a kid, we had a hockey trip down to North Dakota to play against some 'merican teams. One of our adults, slightly inebriated, almost got into a fight at McDonalds because he wanted some "fucking vinegar for my fucking fries!" As an adult, I concur with his taste.

  19. I like this one... I remember my Mother getting everything ready to make ham salad one day, only to find out that my Brother had eaten all of the ham she'd bought for it. With all the veggies already diced, she decided to use Spam, but she was furious with my Brother. As it turned out, everyone liked it better with Spam. She used Spam from then on.

  20. ODE TO SPAM. Most of you know that I'm a country boy. I may be gay, but I'm still a child of the woods. I was born and raised in Alaska, but my parents are both from South Texas. I grew up on Texan and Mexican food. Biscuits and gravy for breakfast, enchiladas or chicken fried steak for dinner. I always say I spent half my life in a tent. Sometimes we'd be in the middle of nowhere for weeks at a time. We relied on Moose and Caribou to fill our freezer. It was a fantastic way to grow up! I cherish those memories. Because of the long trips miles from civilization, we needed food that wouldn't spoil. One of the items we always had on these hunting trips was Spam. When the bacon ran out, it was Spam and eggs for breakfast. Even at home there was always Spam in the cabinet. Having two older Brothers, the lunch meat was often gone when I went to fix my lunch for school. So I'd break out a can of Spam. It started as my only alternative, but I quickly developed a taste for the stuff. Even to the point that I'd pass over the ham or roast beef cold cuts for my good friend Spam. Even today I feel the craving a few times a year, and I overcome the judgment of others as I take the Spam from my cart and place it on the belt at the checkout. Like a full moon to a werewolf, I felt the calling yesterday. So I loaded up a few cans of my old friend, along with other grocery items. Today I went to make myself a sandwich for lunch, and while grabbing pickles from the fridge, I spotted a jar of Tostitos salsa con queso dip I had picked up with tortilla chips. Hmmm? A healthy slather of the queso dip on a slice of the bread and some thick Spam slices, and a new favorite was concocted. A side of Grillo's pickles and Cheetos puffs, and lunch for a King was served and fully enjoyed! OK, King of the trailer park maybe, but I can live with that. I'm mostly English, Irish and Scottish, with a little dose of White Trash to round things out. D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S !

  22. Recoated the diaphragm, reassembled and the issue persisted. Took apart the headphone plug and found the hose clamp shorting all 5 outer pins. Even without the hose clamp, all 3 wires to one ear are shorted together. Wired the driver straight to the energiser board and, sure enough, it sounds wonderful! Time to make a nice replacement cable. The old driver sounds noticeably worse than the one I re-coated, so still a massive thanks to spritzer for the tip. Pissed off that I ignored that 1) troubleshoot the easiest and most obvious bits first; and 2) electronics is the science of contacts (as the old Russian saying goes).

  24. This is a bit of an odd one. Anyone who has listened to my radio show knows I'm not a huge fan of psytrance. With that said, I'm sad to find out about the passing of Olli Wisdom. He recorded a mass of albums and performed live as Space Tribe. In the early 80s Olli was part of the goth rock band Specimen and ran the Batcave nightclub. The club released a couple cassettes including one by the infamous industrial and proto power electronics act Whitehouse. Olli got in early on the UK acid house revolutions (which took place when he was the tender age of ...30) and was active as a DJ since the early 90s. I never met him, but I was aware of his presence and music for a good 25 years. In a scene full of revered egos and people with vastly inflated senses of self-importance, Olli was a very down to earth greatly respected individual. He was quite a character, too. There was a time when I'd have thought 63 was ancient and a ripe old age. Now it's "ulp, that's not that far off is it?"
