  1. My Father moved to Vegas in 1980, and I joined him there after being accepted to UNLV. I spent my Junior and Senior years there in '81 and '82. I've told stories about waiting on Sinatra at the restaurant I worked at. Biggest asshole I've ever met. And I've been acquainted with a lot of assholes. Anyway, my Father was making a living playing poker. Mostly playing with retired old men at Circus Circus. But there were a few times that he played with the big boys. He played with Doyle a dozen times or so. I'll never forget one particular time when he shut my Dad down and took him for all he had put aside for that night (my Dad never played for more than he could afford to lose). I had the car that evening and took my little Sister to go pick him up. This particular night was at the Flamingo, and Brunson decided to treat my little Sister, myself and my Dad to banana splits at Lindy's (an ice cream parlor in the hotel). He had one too, and was just a really nice guy. My Sister was 12, and he treated her like a little Queen. R.I.P. Mr. Brunson. You were a class act Sir!

  3. If it were me, I'd source 2 quads of Toshiba 2SK170/2SJ74 from punkydawgs on ebay, and just do the SS bal/ubal board with JFET input. But that's me. It seems like someone on HF has a tube input CFA3, but I didn't see any pics or direct posts by the person who supposedly has it. I know dukei has been talking about it. Kevin would probably know. A lot of the HF crowd seems to run a tube preamp into the CFA3 and use that to get their "tube" sound. I guess you could do that if you wanted. I used to have a tube pre, a Counterpoint SA5.1, which used 6922s and sounded good. It had a slight hum to it which took me about 6-7 years to find (PSU board layout error), and I sold it right after that and never listened to it after I fixed it, other than to verify it was now dead quiet. I feel like I need a shower now after being on HF for a few minutes

  5. The Residents? Not creative in their imaging? Here is the cover for their triple concept album on the emotional effects of 9/11 that contained the song Make Me Moo: The random YouTuber "Virgil Pink" used the Atom Heart Mother cover as a static image for the music clip.

  8. Just an FYI, the diyaudio store has Toshiba matched quads and octets of J74/K170. Octet is US $90 or $100 depending upon IDSS. These are BL devices. Good luck on the tube input, and if that is what you really want, I'd agree; go for it. I'm sure Dukei will be much help here.

  9. Think about keeping it modular and separate the tube pre from the power amp. Same as you separated the PSU already and not stuff everything into a single like 6U 800mm deep chassis

  10. The Amphenol's don't have removable pins, so no crimping possible and also no variable size pins available as well. It only has one 18 AWG pin (and all the others are max 20 AWG wire pins), so not really suited for a high current class A amp. A much better connector is the AMP CPC shell Size 17, p/n 206043-1, 206044-1 (PSU side), 183040-1, 183039-1 (amp side), as used on the BHSE or the Dark Star. Pins are removable and all sorts of pins for crimping (as well as soldering if you wished) and sizes for 16...26 AWG wire are available for the same size 17 connector. Very nice modular and serviceable system. It is HV rated and the 16-18 AWG pins would be perfect for the beefy GRLVs. Really nice.

  11. Hmmm, ebay seller punkydawgs doesn't seem to have anything available right now, but says he's out until May 23. There is another seller there, ash_win, who is selling curve matched pairs of K170/J74s that looks to be the real deal. Austin, TX.

  12. there are a few units with the tube front end that have been built. less than 5 i think. boosting the front end high voltage will increase the power in the current mirror that follows the tube. so you might have to change some of those parts.

  27. Any specific reason why you would put tube unbal-bal converter in front of CFA? Just to make it as complicated as possible? There will be ~100 more parts in signal path, hardly they will make amplifier sound better.

  28. I don't know about going that high. Assuming this is a full wave bridge, you would have around 161 Vdc on the first filter caps. That is quite a bit of voltage to burn off. You could actually drop down to 80Vac and still get about 113Vdc, which would be plenty.

  29. Not sure if the Hammond has enough current capacity. Hammond 229B88. It's only 88V, 130mA. The only issue with using 100V or so is a bit more heat on the pass device(s).

  33. I would think it would be OK to run all of these thru a single umbilical. Most people use Amphenol circular connector, MIL spec. Another connector I would consider would be JAE. The Counterpoint SA5.1 preamp I used to have used these, and they seemed pretty nice. Mouser carries them (not sure where you are located). They have 7 pin and 10 pin. https://www.mouser.com/c/connectors/circular-connectors/standard-circular-connectors/standard-circular-connector/?q=SRCN I would use female on the PSU, male on the amp. You don't want exposed Male pins on a power supply for safety. Also, I might have a couple of GRHV 100 PCBs here, though they aren't mine. I would have to ask the owner if he wanted to sell one of them. This is one of the GRHV (100?) boards that I have:

  34. I've been fiddling around with the image, cropping it and enhancing it. As far as I can make out the top line is "Juliette Bat(e)y" But I can find no album by anyone of that name. It could have been a demo pressing. Maybe someone else might have more luck finding it.

  39. I shoud've make that clear, I did not use WYRD for sonic improvement and it did not (maybe a little, really little). I used it cuz my computer (designed for gaming) couldn't bring stable signal (too much latency) to my dac. I've tried nearly all digital connections over year(s) with different dacs, or digital chains. The differences between connections and DDCs/usb cleaners were only "nuance" differences. And believe me I've tested them blind to avoid honeymoon and placebo effects for I'm extremely skeptical. The thing we (I) don't like as I understand, if I understand correctly, you behave and talk like a vacuum cleaner salesman, who insist the vacuum cleaner he sold is way better than any others based on no useful basis. And you might be comapring your vacuum cleaner with broomstick. There is no theorical basis, and as it seems there is no practical basis which can be acceptable too. If you wanna make a point why don't you send "the interface" or whatever this is to people that can measure - theorical or hearing based (with blind test) -, and let him/her share foundings with head-case? Or send it to me, I have various digital inputs/outputs i can compare with it.

  41. I don't even really like saxophones very much (sorry @MexicanDragon), and I think the first three notes of this song are one of the greatest sounds ever recorded. I could listen to them over and over again -- fortunately the song allows just that. The original lacks the same intense energy, but probably has a better groove
