what is the tape trick? my 43-86 push-pull is as tight as it was new, i imagine (any tighter and it would be a bit of a struggle to zoom), but i like to know trickses.

You put a piece of electrical tape on the length of the barrel where the push-pull ring moves, giving extra resistance for the ring. With black tape on the underside of the lens, it's hardly noticeable. I'm sure there are more elegant solutions for fixing the zoom creep, but it only takes a minute or so and virtually free, provided you already have an electrical tape. I'd just need to remember to change the tape periodically so that it doesn't get nasty as electrical tape tends to do.
