I am so glad I did not order the EOS-M from Adorama, who cancelled all the backorders.  I ordered from B&H when EOS-M/22mm was already backordered, but they honored the order unlike Adorama.  I just received it, and to my surprise, B&H seems to have honored the EOS-M/22mm backorder with EOS-M/22mm/90EX kit!  That's right, 90EX flash included for my $299 order  ;D

I was also happy to find out the cheaper Viltrox adapter works great with EF lenses.

Finally, a sample shot with EOS-M/85L with the 90EX acting as master to fire off-camera 580 EX II.

Where was I?

IR-modified 5D with an EF 50mm F/1.4 @ F/1.4, 1/3200th, ISO50.

In retrospect, I should have pushed this 1 or 2 third of a stop. IR metering is nuts.

The last bits of sunlight shine down on Lowell, MA.  Jack Kerouac might approve.  30D & EF 50mm F/1.8 (Mk I, thank you) @ F/4, 1/250th, ISO 100.

I wasn't in Lowell voluntarily, I got hired to take photos of a new lighting install a friend of mine did.  S95 @ F/2, 1/40th, ISO800.

It's hard to tell from this photo, but this is a shot of a Granby cop escorting Clinto being escorted to a cruiser, carrying the remaining fireworks that hadn't been set off yet. Fortunately, after the fireworks were confiscated, no arrests were made.

I really want to buy the Nikon 85mm f/1.8g lens.  Does it seems ridiculous to buy an 85mm prime for a DX lens (127mm equiv on DX)?  (This would probably mostly be used outdoors for candid photos at this length.)  Perhaps I should save my money and get the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 instead.

I don't think that putting an 85mm lens on DX is ridiculous at all. That FOV is great for portraits and isolating the subject. The narrow FOV makes finding a suitable background for your subject easy and the length prevents weird facial distortions. Nice and simple.

That being said, I would not discount a wide angle lens for candid shots or even portraits although it is harder to make it work.

While you do need to get in close with wide angle lenses (now get at least half a step closer) you can still be quite stealth with them. With a long lens you have the disadvantage that you are CLEARLY pointing the camera at someone when you want to take their picture. With a wide you can be pointing the camera just over their shoulder (or so they think) and get them on the one side of the frame with a lovely park (or their laboratory, a car lot, or whatever) filling in the rest. As another option for stealth shooting with a wide angle lens you can also shoot without looking through the camera. It takes some practice, and you will fire off plenty of duds, but its digital just delete and try again.

If you go realllllly wide you do need to pay attention to distortions, but IME this issue is blown way out of proportion. Unless you are looking to take head-shots with a 35mm or wider lens... Head to foot with a 28mm lens is close enough to fine.

Because why not:

I broke my GRD4 the other day. It makes me sad.

This EF-M 22 mm f/2 lens is a beauty.  I especially love how close you can get (15 cm) with awesome 1:2 near-macro ability.  Sharpness, bokeh, and build quality are way beyond what the low price suggests also.  Given the stratospheric pricing of recent Canon lenses, I'm happy with the little EF-M 22 mm and may pick up the EF-M 18-55 to try.  Below at f/2.

^ That sucks.  BTW, what did you get for replacement, another GRD4?

I'm getting the newer version. The GRD4 suited my style and what I want out of a compact camera quite nicely, and the GR looks like more of the same with more ISO which was always the weak point of the GRD4.

Talking to Ari about wide angle lenses and then doing some research and checking out some portraits/candids online sealed the deal for me on a wide angle lens.  It is so much fun and you can get such great shots.  You'll get plenty of crap, but there are shots that you would never get otherwise.  You give good advice about this stuff, Ari.

In the most perfect example of irony ever to be witnessed by man, the replacement for the most perfect travel camera will be here next Friday while I am in SLC on my annual buying trip.

Winning!

Fedex came through and the new camera is here!

Now I don't have to take the Nikon to Utah. Yaay!

Thanks!

Have you tried shooting in a car (not while driving, of course)? It's pretty fun.

You have to get the light just right, but the cramped space makes getting close easy :) Nice soft outside light with just a little bit of fill flash bounced off the roof or through a diffusion dome thingy is NICE.
